...In this research note we will discuss strengths and weaknesses in the design of this study, and propose ways to deal with the weaknesses in a follow-up study. We will address two themes; generalizability and reliability/validity. Generalizability Generalizability theory is mainly used as a tool to conceptualize and design reliable data. (Brennan 2001) If we want to operationalize generalizability than generalizability would be an extension of your conclusions from for example a small survey to a much larger population. Applying this on case studies, Mills, Durepos and Wiebe (2010) say generalizability refers to the ability of extending the validity of one's case study conclusions to other cases of the kind. In his paper, Malmi actually uses the term theoretical generalization and defines it as the explanations generated from this and other case studies that will help ABC failure as a phenomenon to become understandable. In order to achieve this, Malmi explicitly illustrates the different interests of organizational stakeholders, different purposes for the use of ABC and describes political, economic and cultural influences on ABC implementation. Due to the multiple factors affecting ABC implementation, Malmi described ABC failure in a broad context such that his conclusion is easier transferable to other organizations. Reliability and validity In the context of quantitative studies, reliability can be defined as the extent to which evidence is independent of the person...

...online templates and step-by-step guides for writing common business documents such as letters, memos, email, and press releases. Category: Business Documents Hide Descriptions Writing Guides Business Letters: When you write business letters in industry or for a class, knowing your purpose and audience will help determine what information to include. Generally, business letters follow a particular format, although your instructor or company may require you to use alternative formats. This guide provides writers with an introduction to writing business letters. Case Studies: This guide examines case studies, a form of qualitative descriptive research that is used to look at individuals, a small group of participants, or a group as a whole. Researchers collect data about participants using participant and direct observations, interviews, protocols, tests, examinations of records, and collections of writing samples. Starting with a definition of the case study, the guide moves to a brief history of this research method. Using several well documented case studies, the guide then looks at applications and methods including data collection and analysis. A discussion of ways to handle validity, reliability, and generalizability follows, with special attention to case studies as they are applied to composition studies. Finally, this guide examines the strengths and weaknesses of case studies. Desktop Publishing: Desktop publishing is the process of laying out and designing pages...

Each student (with at least two partners) will be assigned one of these case studies to present to the class and to initiate and lead the discussion. Students will work in groups of 2 or 3 depending upon class enrollment. All students are expected to read each case study and participate in the discussion – you will be graded on your discussions as well as leading your case study. You will have Group Pages assigned within Blackboard that will enable you to have on-line discussions with your partners for your case study assignment. Exams: You will have three tests during the semester. The test will be given to you at the end of a Virtual Classroom discussion and you will have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete and return to the professor. ...Assessment Centre > Introduction | Assessment Centre has a variety of definitions and these are based on its methodology of assessing a candidate’s performance and aptitude. Trained Assessors observe a group of candidates performing a variety of aptitude diagnostic procedures which provide specific information on the abilities and developmental capacity of each applicant. An Assessment Centre is actually a process applicants take part in and is not specific to any one location. Its popularity is also evident in staff growth plans where it is usually known as a Development Centre. These procedures are designed to ensure employee investment is maximised for both the organisation and the individual. Whilst the general process is very similar to Assessment Centres the subtle difference is that at a Development Centre you will be given feedback immediately and work with the assessor to agree a future plan. Many organisations use the expertise of an HR consultant to design the exercises to meet their specific role requirements and then to conduct the actual testing and assessment of candidates. These services come with a significant cost and that is why you will increasing face testing through an Assessment Centre as you apply for higher-level strategic and technical roles. The length of an Assessment Centre will vary from half-a-day to two full days and may be held on the employer’s premises, often within their own training facilities or on the premises of the organisations Human...

...In a case study of office politics, Thomas Green of Dynamic Displays finds himself engrossed in drama as he struggles to meet the expectations of a boss whose power was superseded in his hiring. Green’s boss Frank Davis would have normally hired for Green’s position; Davis’ boss McDonald had hired Green instead. Although the case study advises the reader that McDonald warned Green that he would be in a “sticky situation” her intentions in putting him in the situation are ambiguous leaving the reader to make their own assumptions (Sasser & Beckham, 2008, p. 3). At best the reader can assume that McDonald’s agenda was to advance the company objectives and she felt that Green was the best new hire for the team although she must have known that he was not a team player. This hiring situation puts Green in an awkward position with Davis and off on a bad foot from the get go. Davis’s expectations were not only very different from what Green anticipated would be expected of him but it also seemed that Davis may have expected Green to perform better than what would have normally been expected considering the hiring circumstances. In addition to this subliminal expectation on the part of Davis, he also seemed to have a very different work style than Green. While Green wanted the freedom to be creative and go where he deemed best on any given day, Davis wanted Green to report frequently and post to his Outlook calendar whenever he changed his schedule (Sasser & Beckham, 2008...

The paper discusses the limitations of the case study design for theory building and explains how grounded theory systemic process adds to the case study design. The author reflects upon his experience in conducting research on the articulation of both traditional social networks and new virtual networks in six rural communities in Peru, using both case study design and grounded theory in a combined fashion in order to discover an emergent theory. Key Words: Case Study, Interpretive Approach, Theory Building, and Grounded Theory Introduction Researchers adopting a case study design face a number of challenges in making their argument. Yin (2003) himself warns researchers who adopt a case study design to be conscious that their findings will be challenged and prefaces his book enumerating the alleged weaknesses in the case study; a methodology that downgrades the academic disciplines and lacks sufficient precision, objectivity, and rigour. We should note that those warnings come from an author who operates from...

...CASE 1 An Overview of Organizational Behavior Difficult Transitions Tony Stark had just finished his first week at Reece Enterprises and decided to drive upstate to a small lakefront lodge for some fishing and relaxation. Tony had worked for the previous ten years for the O’Grady Company, but O’Grady had been through some hard times of late and had recently shut down several of its operating groups, including Tony’s, to cut costs. Fortunately, Tony’s experience and recommendations had made finding another position fairly easy. As he drove the interstate, he reflected on the past ten years and the apparent situation at Reece. At O’Grady, things had been great. Tony had been part of the team from day one. The job had met his personal goals and expectations perfectly, and Tony believed he had grown greatly as a person. His work was appreciated and recognized; he had received three promotions and many more pay increases. Tony had also liked the company itself. The firm was decentralized, allowing its managers considerable autonomy and freedom. The corporate Culture was easygoing. Communication was open. It seemed that everyone knew what was going on at all times, and if you didn’t know about something, it was easy to find out. The people had been another plus. Tony and three other managers went to lunch often and played golf every Saturday. They got along well both personally and professionally and truly worked together as a team. Their boss had been very supportive...
