Another historical episode that contributes to Christianity being an obstacle to scientific development in Europe during the Copernican Revolution is Urban VIII order against astrologers in 1633. In 1630, Orazio Morandi an astrologer released several predictions built upon astrological calculations, that included a prediction of Pope Urban VII’s death. In the summer of that year he was sentenced to prison. After this in 1631 Urban VII presented a decree that stated the opposition of astrologers who asserted that they could cast prophecies “for the good or harm of the living.” If they were caught practicing “magic” they were “excommunicated” and threat of “death and confiscation of property” were consequences.
