College Admissions Essay: Am I Really Living Life

Until now, besides choosing the chocolate or strawberry milk carton in the cafeteria, school was not much of a choice for me to make. Granted no one was holding a gun to my head when I decided to pursue a Bachelor of Science, but attending college was certainly an expectation of me instilled as an imperative checkpoint for a success life. The diminished regard I’ve felt during this journey was most apparent during finals of every semester. I would cry out to my roommates, “am i really living life” or “when will the preparing end” amongst many other cliches. I have unfortunately failed to fully appreciate my education. I want to starve for knowledge and no longer take it for granted. Nevertheless, I unquestionably enjoy learning, especially …show more content…
I was able to recognize everything that was being done from the numerous videos I had watched since high school but now I was there, in the room, and I faint. I was then guided, full of embarrassment, to the nurses’ station and handed a Coke Zero from their stash ordinarily reserved for the unsteady fathers and guests of the patients. I sat there and I thought. Is this truly what I am meant to do with my life? Who was I kidding thinking I could be the first doctor of my family? Maybe it is time to consider my plan B as more than a backup. And why do they only keep Coke Zero for the woozy? As I sat filling with self doubt and wishing I had all the sugary goodness of an old fashion Coke-Cola I reminded myself of all the reasons why this is exactly what I needed to do for the rest of my life in order to never again utter the words “I’m on my way to work.” I remembered the blissful warmth that filled me when I held the leg of Ashley during my first delivery and how the process of creating life has always found a way to fascinate me. To be able to embrace the beauties of life in the development of a healthy child would make the innumerable hours of studying I have already endured as well as the ones that have yet to be

...Breaking Into Cars—Stephen I had never broken into a car before. We were in Laredo, having just finished our first day at a Habitat for Humanity work site. The Hotchkiss volunteers had already left, off to enjoy some Texas BBQ, leaving me behind with the college kids to clean up. Not until we were stranded did we realize we were locked out of the van. Someone picked a coat hanger out of the dumpster, handed it to me, and took a few steps back. “Can you do that thing with a coat hanger to unlock it?” “Why me?” I thought. More out of amusement than optimism, I gave it a try. I slid the hanger into the window’s seal like I’d seen on crime shows, and spent a few minutes jiggling the apparatus around the inside of the frame. Suddenly, two things simultaneously clicked. One was the lock on the door. (I actually succeeded in springing it.) The other was the realization that I’d been in this type of situation before. In fact, I’d been born into this type of situation. My upbringing has numbed me to unpredictability and chaos. With a family of seven, my home was loud, messy, and spottily supervised. My siblings arguing, the dog barking, the phone ringing—all meant my house was functioning normally. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skill—you know, in case my aircraft...

Going To College

...school? I would like to go to a good college that is well respected nation wide. This is a similar opinion for many High School and Jr. High students. Many students would like to attend a good college but they do not know what school to pick. When deciding what school is the best place for you and for you to learn, you need to take in account a lot of things. These things can determine what college can make you get the best college experience. Such as their sports programs, their student acceptance rate, their campus, the colleges expenses and tuition, and their living facilities. A big part of college, and it will be for me, is the college's sports program. If a school has a good sports program...

Xiearmyxiearmy 零四岁末于美国穷乡僻壤 Chapter I Application Essay Examples INTRODUCTION This appendix contains 115 actual essays written, by 17 different applicants, for leading MBA programs. They address dozens of different essay topics. The applicants and their essays have been selected to give you the widest possible range of materials from which to profit. The first four applicants all applied to the University of Chicago. They were chosen by Chicago’s admissions director, Don Martin, according to my desire that they be from four very different people and of average quality for those admitted. In other words, these essays will show you exactly what you are competing against. They are of perfectly acceptable quality, but they should not discourage you. If you follow the lessons of this book you should be able to surpass each of these efforts. The second set of three applicants—Melissa, Doreen, and Carol—is taken from Columbia University’s files. Columbia’s admissions director, Linda Meehan, was asked to supply several applications, again from people of widely differing backgrounds, but this time of superior quality. I think that this group’s applications are of a somewhat higher...

...Evan Mandery Professor, John Jay College of Criminal Justice • Why I'm Skipping My Harvard Reunion (A Call to Action) Posted: 05/06/2014 8:51 am EDT Updated: 07/06/2014 5:12 am EDT In a few weeks, the Harvard class of 1989 will be reuniting in Cambridge. There'll be mini-TED talks, a "Taste of New England Dinner," and a chance to sing with the Boston Pops, but I'll be spending the weekend coaching my son's Little League team and hanging out with my family. Reunions seem unnatural to me. I refuse to participate in the charade of pretending to be surprised to see a classmate, and when I'm asked, "What have you been doing?" as one inevitably is, I never know where to draw the line between "stuff" and the full, self-reflective version one might share with a close friend. I think too much detail implies an exaggerated sense of self-worth and is hence a greater faux pas than too little detail, so I've always hewed closer to the "stuff" version, but this runs its own risk of suggesting you don't think the other person is important enough to merit the full telling of your own story. It's a minefield and, in the social media era, one that's entirely avoidable. I've never been unable to locate an old friend or classmate online. It's particularly easy for graduates of Harvard, which maintains a great alumni website--it's where Facebook started, after all. Anyone interested in me can find my professional record on LinkedIn, family photos on Facebook, and many hilarious tweets. If one wanted...

...10 Steps to Earn a High GRE Score The following is a guide to scoring high on the GRE test. If you follow these steps, your GRE score will improve. 1. Relax: Preparing for the GRE can be stressful. Try to focus on the task at hand and not so much on everything else you have to do. If you take GRE test prep step-by-step, day-by-day, and give yourself breaks when your body needs them, you'll be able to concentrate on GRE studies a lot better. 2. GRE Diagnostic Test: Begin GRE test prep with a GRE practice test to find out what you're good at, and more importantly, what you're not good at. Correct your completed practice test and evaluate the questions you missed. What kind of questions did you miss? Are they mostly Quantitative or mostly Verbal? What score would you give yourself on Analytical Writing? Did you miss a lot of analogies but do well on reading comprehension? With this information you'll be able to focus your GRE test prep studies on your weaknesses. 3. GRE Study Plan: With your GRE weaknesses in mind, make a very specific study plan for yourself. You should know what, how, and when you are going to study for the GRE test. Put your study plan somewhere in plain view, and make sure you stick to your plan. Try to keep GRE test prep interesting by planning to study different things in different ways. For example, study GRE vocabulary from flash cards one day, from a list the second day, and by reading and learning words in context the third day. 4. GRE Vocabulary: ...
