Lobbyists are currently trying to repeal the federal laws making the growth, production, and possession of medicinal cannabis illegal because of the benefits to people with cancer, glaucoma, and chronic pain. If successful this will also make it legal to grow industrial hemp. Industrial hemp can be used for clothing, nutritional supplements, and paper products; building supplies, automotive construction, and alternative fuel sources. With the legalization of hemp this nation conceivably could negate its dependence on foreign oil and reverse the failing economy. From the birth of this nation up to the 1950s, hemp was grown on large farms and in small family plots. Early settlers understood the necessity of growing hemp for rope and sails used on ships, for cloth to make clothes; even the original flag was made from hemp. In fact there were mandatory grow laws in place for years that made it a crime not to grow hemp. In 1937 the government passed a law (Title 21 U.S.C. Controlled Substance Act) that made it illegal to use marijuana for medicinal purposes. Some manufacturers such as Rotax and Hirth offer somewhat moderately priced engines and there are several reasonably priced VW conversions. For those needing engines in the 150-200 hp range, however, there are few choices outside of the two major manufacturers. And there is NOTHING reasonable about those. For example, a recent ad in Trade a Plane listed the price of a new 150 hp Lycoming O-320 at well over $40,000.00! The prices just go up from there. What about a reconditioned or overhauled unit? Well, those started at over $25,000.00 in the same magazine. Some people will say that the high price is because they are Certified engines and the certification process is expensive and time consuming. We are talking here about an engine that was first put in service in 1953 and was developed from an engine designed in the 1930's! One would think that Lycoming would have had ample time to recoup their development and certification costs in the ensuing 63 years. Oh yes, there have been many improvements over the years. In the first activity I knew most of the information presented, but in the second activity I learned quite a bit about researching a topic. I did not know that the URL .org is no longer limited to a non-profit or research organization; which makes it harder to use that as a reliable resource but it can still be useful. I learned it is important to look for non-bias opinions, information with publish dates are resourceful, research based, and the best domains to find good information on are .org, .gov, .mil, and .edu. Although just because the site has one of these domains it does not mean the resource is accurate or correct necessarily. What did you not learn? Well as I said in the previous paragraph in the first activity most of the information that was present I acquired before. The comparison between the library and the internet are basic knowledge to most people. The Library is based for research purposes, with trained staff to help you, but closes at certain times. The internet has multiple reasons for use, with no trained assistance, but it never closes. They each have great traits that can be used for study.
