...Communicating With and Without Language By Lawrence A Bradshaw II COM101 Carol Gray, M.S. At Grand Canyon University Over the course of three days, a lot can happen. Things to be done, things that get done, and everything else in between. During that time, a person’s mood can either be swayed or swing from one direction to the next. There are a lot of factors that can influence those changes. Among the company the person keeps, health, time of day, and even appetite can greatly set the tone for ones perceivable communications: verbal or otherwise. While examining the past weekend, I found myself to fall victim to those aforementioned clauses. Here, we will take a moment to dissect the changes and how they affected communication. Friday: I start my day at 6am. I had not been feeling well, but I continue on with the help of my painkillers. At work, I communicate with a variety of different people. Whether in my office, or on the telephone, there is a vast assortment of personalities to contend with. As the day winds on, I feel myself bogging down. As I walk back and forth between the printer and my desk, the non verbal cues begin to speak louder than my words. People begin to ask “are you ok?” and “you don’t look so good”. Even simple communications with others becomes taxing. It was like watching drink: it starts off slowly, but then time takes its toll. By the end of the day, my interactions with others were kept to a bare minimum. By that, I meant...

...Communicating with Various Groups Paper Saletaa Jones In my interview with the two people that is close to me, one is my daughter, and the other one is my great aunt. My great Aunt Alisha is 65 years old, and she says that she remembers when she was ten years old. Her favorite part of their childhood was Christmas at her granny house. Because, she loved her grandma cooking that was homemade mac and cheese, green beans, greens, corn bread, dinner rolls, ham and baked beans. Also of course the toy, she mainly remembered when she was ten years old. Her grandma got her a lot of electronics she says that she use to be a little neared but for me I say she was just smart. She had gotten video games, bike, solar system, and a doll that came with a doll house and a boy baby. She also said that she loved playing in front of the fireplace wondering when Santa Claus was going to come down and how if the fireplace was lit with fire. In my next interview with my daughter Sy'Eeta, I asked her what is her favorite thing to do because, the other question would have confused her, and she is only five years old. She told me that her favorite thing to do is to lay in her mom bed with her mom, brother, and Daddy and watch a movie while she eats a lot of snacks. I asked her what movie do she like to see she said “well mommy you know I like tree movies” I then asked her what’s the...

...What I have learned from the Communicating Effectively Module The main focus of the studies in this module was the Myers Briggs Type Indicators. These indicators describe the way in which different people think and approach the world. It tells us that each one of us has preferences from the four descriptors giving a possible 16 personality types, Extraverted/Introverted, Sensing/INtuitive, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving. After reading through descriptions of each type, I assessed myself as having an ISFJ type. However, when my results arrived from the MBTI Test completed online, my results were an ESTJ type. Upon reading into the characteristics I questioned whether I was really an extrovert as I have always thought of myself as shy and reserved. The traits of an extravert are those who are energised when they talk though tasks with others and prefer to act after doing so. They enjoy the company of others especially if discussions and projects are in an area of common interest. I originally chose the Feeling type as I consider myself a people person; however I also like to be objective and to look at things logically and debate the issues. After this further analysis, I decided the ESTJ type better described me. Since I have read about the different personality types, I feel it will help me with how to better communicate with work colleagues. When communicating with other extroverts, one should aim to do so face to face. If in groups allow interaction, focus...

...Communicating and Collaborating Hannae Warren GEN/200 09 September 2011 Kim Maclin Communicating and Collaborating In order to communicate and collaborate effectively as a group, everyone needs to adapt to the other team member’s learning styles and personality types. Everyone is unique with how he or she learns and communicates. This paper will explore strategies to effectively communicate and collaborate within a group with team members that have logical/mathematical, interpersonal, and verbal learning styles, and organizer, giver, and thinker personality types. Logical/mathematical learners study or learn best by organizing material logically, developing systems and finding patterns, writing outlines and developing charts and graphs, and by analyzing the information. (Carter, Bishop, & Kravitz, 2007, p.44). They reason inductively, deductively, and scientifically, they are able to perform complex calculations, they are able to recognize abstract patterns, and discern relationships and connections. (Carter, Bishop, & Kravitz, 2007, p.43). This type of learner would be the best candidate to find the appropriate approach to the assignment that has been given to a team. They are apt to making lists, organizing, and making agendas. So who better than the logical/mathematical learner to begin the assignment process? They should also be the individuals to go over the assignment at the end to make sure there are no errors because they are able to find...

Then fill in the blanks of the chart below. Misunderstanding #1 Who was the sender? Co-worker Who was the receiver? Myself What was the message? “Please order coveralls for a technician at the refinery using the protocol previously sent “(L. Metzger, personal communication, August 30, 2011) What channel was used to send the message? Email What was the misunderstanding that occurred? The protocol previously sent was instructions for ordering coverall for a regular refinery worker. Sender failed to state that this was a contractor and not a regular refinery worker. The protocol previously sent does not give instructions to order directly through the vendor as opposed to online ordering. Contractors require special patches on their coveralls that can only be obtained through the vendor directly. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? Had the sender specified this was a contractor and to “spot buy” directly from the vendor. What did you learn about the communication process from this activity? When communicating via email, make sure to include who, what, where, when, and why. What seemed to be the main...

...Communicating Change Communicating Change * People are resistant to change because of the fear of the unknown. * Individuals do not like to change the way tasks are completed; especially if they are accustomed to doing things a certain way for an extended period of time. * How change gets communicated and talked about is crucial to its success.” (p, 291). It is a known fact that change is not easy. Leaders need to introduce change slowly whenever possible. * There are many forms of communicating change, but holding a meeting to address those new changes is the best way to promulgate those changes. It opens up a forum for questions and answers. This way leaders and managers can quickly address the concerns that arise, and if the answer is not known right away then it can be acquired. * Change is constantly happening, so assessing the change and what impact it will have employees and the company may be easier said than done. As leaders team leaders need to be used in order to determine how changes within the organization will affect employee morale. If some of those obstacles or concerns can be identified ahead of time, then the answers can be addressed right away. * There are times when there will be no solutions to a specific change, but a good leadership team and team members will understand and adjust to those changes. * Negative reactions from employees are inevitable, but they need to be addresses to get employees thinking positive...

...Communication is the key to any business's success because without effective communication, there is no structure; this is why communicating with employees is very important. In the Leadership Theory and Practice textbook, one of the strengths of the Leader-Member Exchange Theory states, "LMX theory is noteworthy because it points out the importance of communication in leadership." This tells us "Communication is the vehicle through which leaders and subordinates create, nurture, and sustain useful exchanges" (Northouse, 2013). Furthermore, in order to reinforce its expectations of the company, management should use simple and direct language when communicating their expectations of the employee. This should be done on a continual basis to ensure that their message is completely understood. When communicating with employees, management should be very clear, concrete, and concise on their expectations. According to the MGMT3 textbook written by Chuck Williams, he states, "There are many types of communication-formal, informal, coaching/counseling and nonverbal- but they all follow the same fundamental process.'' (Williams, 2011) He later implies that "Sometimes messages are poorly communicated simply because they are delivered using the wrong communication medium, which is the method used to deliver a message" (Williams, 2011). In an article titled Communication Provides Foundation for Being a Best Place to Work written by Kathleen Skidmore-Williams she affirms the writings...

...HRM-587 Course Project Part 4: Communicating the Change Date: 2/17/13 Communicating the Change Introduction: Communication is generally known as the glue that holds organizations together. It is the way we share information, ideas, goals, directions, expectations, feelings, and emotions in the context of organized action. The change strategy for communicating the necessary changes made by Apple during the integration of iPod and iTunes business unit and the subsequent vision that kept the company flexible to remain competitive, is inherent in its ability to handle communication at all levels. The CEO’s vision provides clear direction for all the business units working together to meet shareholder expectations and at the same time provide value to their customers and employees. The organization works for the mission. Apple understands the importance of being continuously innovative with a vast and loyal army of Apple fanatics behind it to regularly come up with new products like iPad. (A) The communication plan grid is a separate document (B) ONE of the communication pieces: Debut a brand new product with a summary of the company's milestones “Apple followed its usual script for the new iPhone's coming-out party. ...Communicating in the Workplace: Assignment 1.1 Who was the sender? I was the sender in the misunderstanding. Who was the receiver? The receiver was a supply vendor that I ordered supplies from. What was the message? I was trying to order a certain style of parchment paper for awards to be printed on. What channel was used to send the message? Computer based ordering program provided by employer. It was basically internet based communication. What was the misunderstanding that occurred? The wrong paper was delivered to my ship, and new paper had to be ordered. The stock number that was put in for the paper was similar to the one meant to be ordered, resulting in the wrong order. How could the misunderstanding have been avoided? A double check of the order, and communication between the purchaser and supplier to ensure the order was correct. Instead of just putting in an order and pushing send, a phone call could have been made to ensure the correct items were put in for order. Who was the sender? The sender was a superior enlisted supervisor that was in charge of putting together a watch schedule for a special detail. Who was the receiver? The receiver was all supervisors of all personnel included in the watch list. What was the message? ...Communicating and Collaborating with Different Personalities and Learning Styles ADVENTURER • Look for stimulating environments to work in. They prefer a learning team willing to express liveliness and fun. These will keep the adventurer’s mind sharp. • The more active the adventurer is while learning the better. Movement and hands on will keep this personality involved. The pace should be fast. • Do not be afraid to be experimental or even spontaneous. The adventurer thrives in these learning situations. If the subject matter is of special interest to this type, expect the product to be particularly remarkable. ORGANIZER • Well defined order and structure is the environment that best suits the organizer’s study environment. Libraries, tutor bars and home alone are ideal places for quiet and constructed learning. • Clearly outlining what the assignment is will help the organizer be prepared to move immediately forward without confusion. ...Communicating and Collaborating Strategy GEN 200 Abstract Being a part of a learning team or group can sometimes be very beneficial but will also require working with different learning styles and personality types. Everyone will not always come together which will more than likely cause conflict among the team. The team has to be aware that everyone brings a different personality and learning style to the group. Acknowledging this will insure a better working environment and lead to the team’s success. Based on my personal assessment my learning styles are: interpersonal, verbal linguistic and bodily kinesthetic. My personality types are: organizer, adventurer and giver. These characteristics allow me to have a better understanding of my surroundings and be more knowledgeable of people who are different from me. Learning styles help to separate strengths from weaknesses. My first learning style is Interpersonal. An interpersonal person is able to listen to other people’s opinions and view them from another perspective. According to the book, “Interpersonal Skills to Leadership” (Fritz, 2005), I will be a lifelong learner. I prize curiosity. I want to be well informed. My ultimate goal is to learn from my life events so that sometime in my later years I will have great wisdom. As an interpersonal person I enjoy talking with people and helping them, which makes them feel comfortable. People are at ease to discuss conflict with an interpersonal person...

...Christopher Steinpreis The art of Communicating Why do we expect other people to read our minds and know the entire picture (the one that is in our mind) without showing it to them? Just because one person has the picture in their minds eye, doesn’t mean that anyone else sees it. Actually, the person creating the thought is the only one in the entire world (or Universe) that sees that picture. In a perfect world every idea, criticism, and gesture would appear above our heads how they do in comic books. None of this ever actually happens of course, so learning the way of being able to relay your thoughts to another person so that it is understood and recognized, is a very important tool in effective communicating. I found that when I had asked people to give their own definition of communication, were surprisingly unable to actually put into words what they were already doing. My roommate Jonathan is from Mexico City, Mexico and has been out in America as a citizen for six years. When Johnny came to the states he was unable to speak the English language effectively enough to get an idea across, but this in no way has stopped him from becoming a functional part of our society. Where his actual verbal skills and ability to pronunciate our words lacked, Johnny would look to other ways of communicating to get his thoughts across to another and to gather information from the other person. The success of the transmission depends on two factors—content and context. Content is the actual...

...Communicating the Change Aaron A. Czupryn aaczupryn@yahoo.com HRM-587 Managing Organizational Change Professor John Dibenedetto 08/17/2013 Explanation of Spreadsheet Communication Plan. As the goal of this assignment I have set out to develop a realistic communications plan for Starbucks concerning its organizational changes. The goal of the plan is to reach all stakeholders that will be affected by the upcoming changes and make sure that a common language is being used throughout the plan. The stakeholders’ that I have identified through my research includes the following: board of directors, senior management team, district managers, store managers, shift supervisors, baristas (employee), shareholders, vendors, and contractors. The timeline of communication would begin with the initial communication being sent out by the CEO to the board of directors, senior management, and district managers. The district managers would then forward the communication to the store managers and shift supervisors, who would then pass on the information to the baristas (employee). Two separate communications would be sent in conjunction with the first. The first of these communications would originate from the information sent to the board of directors by way of the CEO. The board of directors would forward the communication in its entirety or omit any non-essential information to the shareholders. The communication would inform them of all upcoming organizational changes so...
