...Competency Statement 1: The goals in my Home daycare are to achieve the objective of safety by providing the children with safe environment and equipped children to explore without any injuries. Another goal is to promote healthy habits. Another one is to promote a good age appropriate learning environment. Competency Goal: 1 healthy learning environment Functional Area 1: Learning Environment: One of my goals is to maintain a safe environment for the children in my care to play and explore in. A safe early childhood environment must be strategically laid out. The floor space is large enough for some gross motor activity, yet enough barriers, shelves, tables, exist to deter the children from aimlessly running from one side to another. Tables and chairs are child-sized and placed in such a fashion that one can safely walk behind them, even when another child is sitting in the chair. Shelves are low enough that a child can reach the top without having to climb. This also allows for the adults to be able to see children at all times. Consideration should be given to having open shelves, instead of shelves with backs, for the same purpose. Any shelves that seem wobbly should be securely fastened to a wall. All outlets not in use should be covered with protective covers. Ideally, something like a shelf should also be blocking outlets, to deter children from trying to unplug them. Any cords plugged into sockets should be tucked behind shelves or securely fastened to prevent tripping...

...Running Head: DIFFERENCES IN COMPETENCIES BETWEEN ADN VS BSN 1 Educational Preparation: Differences in Competencies Between Nurses Prepared at Associates-Degree Level Versus the Baccalaureate-Degree Level in Nursing Jenny Curie Grand Canyon University NRS-430V Tara Harris February 10, 2013 DIFFERENCES IN COMPETENCIES BETWEEN ADN VS BSN 2 Competency is defined as the quality of being competent. To be competent one must possess required skill, knowledge, qualification, or capacity. The profession of nursing requires a skillset and knowledge base that is specific to its kind. There are many options in one’s educational journey to obtain a nursing degree. Nursing is the largest health care profession in our society today with three million registered nurses nationwide (AACN, Nursing Workforce). Along with the growing profession and the ever growing need for quality health care the debate over what qualifies a nurse to be skillful and competent in her profession and what type of education is required is at the for front. What are the differences in competency between a nurse with an associates degree and one holding a baccalaureate degree? Of the three million registered nurses nationwide 50% of those hold a baccalaureate degree while 36.1% have an associates degree, and 13% a diploma (AACN, Nursing Workforce). The quality in which we provide patient care and the need for those in this field to obtain higher levels of education...

...Health care organizations aim to provide both quality and safe patient care. These two fundamental and critical concepts in health care require continuous effort. “Organizations must make an intentional effort to measure, assess, and improve performance” (Spath, 2014, pp.266). Quality improvement (QI) is essential for the continued success of an organization as it reveals specific guidelines and methods to provide consistent and dependable quality services. This paper will discuss QI while focusing on quality management’s role and importance in health care, stakeholder’s different views of quality, QI roles, and what areas in health care require monitoring. Additionally, involved accrediting and regulatory organizations in QI and helpful resources and organizations that affect QI will be discussed. Quality Management According to Kelly (2011), quality management refers to how managers operating in various types of health services organizations and settings understand, explain, and continuously improve their organizations to allow them to deliver quality and safe patient care, promote quality patient and organizational outcomes, and improve health in their communities” (pp. 9). Therefore, the purpose of quality management is to enhance the effectiveness, efficiency, and safety of health care processes to achieve quality outcomes. Management can achieve this through providing effective leadership, ensuring competency among staff, identifying opportunities to improve processes...

...Competency Goal 1 To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment A safe and healthy learning environment is essential for young children in a classroom. One goal in the functional area of safe is to prevent and reduce injuries and still have a learning environment that is conducive to the children learning their own safe and healthy environments. SAFE: * Young infants are placed on their backs when they are sleeping. The crib is free of blankets, toys, or other soft materials that could cause suffocation. * Mobile infants are kept safe by making sure that there isn't anything that is small enough they could put in their mouths and swallow. Toys are checked daily for broken or loose parts. * Toddlers are kept safe by showing them the proper use of toys. They are encouraged to follow safety rules such as walking instead of running and sitting on a chair instead of climbing on it. HEALTHY: * Young infants are kept healthy by washing hands of both the caregiver and the child before and after every diaper change as well as sanitizing the changing table. Disposable gloves are used for the diapering process. * Mobile infants are kept healthy by cleaning and sanitizing play areas daily. Mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area for later cleaning. * To keep toddlers healthy, nutritious meals are planned . ...Competency Goal 1 To establish and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment My goal is to establish and maintain a learning environment that is safe and healthy for children. This goal is important because children need a safe and healthy learning environment in order to get the best out of their experience at school. If they do not feel safe, or their families feel as if they are not safe, then they are in a non-suitable environment. A classroom should provide environments as safe as possible to reduce the inevitable situation of accidents Safety To meet my goal I will keep the playground as free from harmful objects and people as possible. I will also make sure that the classroom cleaning chemicals will be put out of children’s reach. I then will post fire drills and tornado drill directions clearly in the classroom and practice them frequently with the children. I will also provide a first aid kit readily available for adults to use and be knowledgeable of proper usage. On a regular basis I will check the toys in the classroom for broken objects and remove anything that poses a threat to the children and keep myself informed of any safety recalls or alerts on any toys or other equipment in the classroom. Healthy My goal is to have a classroom that encourages healthy practices to keep both the children and the teachers safe and free from disease as possible. Healthy children are always the best type of children. When they are...

...My Leadership SMART Goal Leadership development is one of the many pertinent skills that nurses has to master in congruent with the dynamic and fast changing healthcare system, in order to provide an effective and safe patient care. Part of effective leadership is setting a goal that is achievable and realistic for the team or group in order to reach a desired outcome. Using a SMART-formatted goal ensures that the desired outcome is achievable, hence the meaning of SMART goal, Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time bound. To help with my leadership development in the care of my patients, I will focus my SMART goal on improving my leadership skills in patient education particularly with pain management on post-surgical patients since I take care of a lot of post-surgical patients. This goal is in line with one of the Institute of Medicine’s core competencies for health clinicians that states to provide patient-centered care. I will achieve my goal with some help from a team member at work. Nurses and other health care professionals are expected to provide care that is effective, safe, and patient-centered. One of the core competencies that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) set for healthcare professionals is to provide patient-centered care. Providing a care that is patient-centered focuses on including the patients in their plan of care, recognize, and respect their needs, values and preferences. Open communication with the patients and collaborative care is also...

...treatments and medications, patient and family education and serving as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Nurses care for individuals and families in all phases of the health and wellness continuum as well as provide leadership in health care delivery systems and in academic settings (Medicine, 2011). Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) graduates have a proven track record for providing safe bedside care for clients from the first day they are hired. They function well as team members and, after a period of orientation, can assume responsibility for the care of clients who are more acutely ill (Catalano, 2009). Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BSN) prepared RNs provide an additional focus on leadership, translating research for nursing practice, and population health; they practice across all healthcare settings (Medicine, 2011). NURSING COMPETENCIES One way in which the nursing profession identifies what nurses do is by looking at competencies. In nursing, the word “competence” is often defined as the combination of skills, knowledge, attitudes, values, and abilities that support the safe and effective practice of the nurse. A nurse practices...

...addressed. Due to licensing and practicing regulations in many states, nurses are entering the workforce qualified to provide more care than they are legally allowed to provide. In the majority of states, for example, the nurse practitioner (NP) is required to be supervised by a physician in order to see and prescribe medications for patients. This poses a problem due to the decreasing number of medical students entering primary care and the increasing number of NPs who are entering primary care (IOM, 2011). Another recommendation is the need for nurse residency programs that would ease the transition from school to work. This would allow new graduates to further develop the skills and experience needed to deliver safe patient care, in addition to decreasing turnover rates. The report calls for these programs to be used in the community setting as well as the acute care setting (The future, 2011; IOM, 2011). The second key message from the report states “nurses should achieve higher levels of education and training through an improved education system that promotes...
