Dressing for Success

BUS 474- PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
Prof. Marie Hermann
October 11, 2009

Introduction “Successful and unsuccessful people do not vary greatly in their abilities, they vary in their desires to reach their potentials.” (John Maxell). Over the many years, the clothing that an individual wears has continued to tell a vast amount about their character. From an individual that wears loose trousers, to an individual that wears tight blouses, the attire a person wears ultimately shapes their identity, impacts the perceptions of others that may have about them, and the individual’s professional goals in a business (Bruce). However, the one variable that still remains true and sound is, when in a business world one must dress for success. Therefore, it is highly important to dress for success for interviews, searching for a job, and even on the job sites as our attire sends great messages to the perspective viewers. As the old saying goes, “It is much better to be overdressed than to be underdressed (or undressed).”
Appropriate Dress Wears for an Interview
According to Kim Zoller at Image Dynamics, “55% of another person’s perception of you is based on how you look” (Dressing for Success). Dressing for success during an interview sometimes determines whether an individual will or will not get the job. The interview is the process where the interviewer puts a picture to the resume that was presented. Therefore if the resume sounds professional, the individual is expected to look the same vice versa; in other words “play the game, look the part.”(Bruce) Dressing for success consists of wearing the appropriate clothing that will make an individual stand above the rest. When purchasing professional business wear an individual should shop at a place that specializes in business wear and also purchase preferably darker/solid colors such as navy, dark brown, black…etc. For males, wearing a well ironed suit matched with a button-down long sleeve shirt, polished dress shoes, and a tie that is not too flamboyant is an ideal look to have during an interview (Bruce). In addition for ladies, wearing a well ironed pants suit (trousers not too tight); with a camisole under the jacket, and polished dressed shoes is an ideal look. Also ladies can wear a business dress that is not too flashy paired with professional pumps is also another acceptable apparel for an interview.
Importance of the Appearance for the Interview The constant question that seems to be asked is whether or not dressing appropriately truly matters in the interviewing process? Whether it is for a fortune 500 company or a construction company, it actually does matter in many cases. One obvious reason why dressing appropriately is important is because it shows how serious you are for the position as appearances are apart of first impressions. If you can impress with the appearance aspect, then you are already in a favorable position of obtaining the job position. Now, here are some the reasons or benefits as to why you should dress for success:
• Having a start over a real challenge
• Dressing for Success is about self-esteem and hope
• Success gives individuals dressing for both professional and personal levels, and it gives one the tool involves to live independently
• It enhance positive qualities that one possesses
• It encourages one to walk proudly to an interview

Women’s Interview Attire Women’s attire has gone through several transformations as to what is acceptable attire then, to what is appropriate today. Given this concept, women are encouraged to wear the following according to Alison Doyle, About.com Author, and the following is: “
• Solid Color, Conservative Suite
• Coordinated Blouse
• Moderate Shoes
• Limited Jewelry
• Neat, Professional Hair Style
• Tan or Light hosiery
• Sparse Makeup and Perfume
• Manicured Nails
• Portfolio or Briefcase” (e.g.2)

Men’s Interview Attire Men’s professional attire has been virtually the same throughout the generations. However, what has varied from generation to generation is style and creativity. From these core concepts, here are traditional outlines that are appropriate attire. According to About.com author, Alison Doyle, men should wear the following: “
• Solid Color, Conservative Suite
• White Long Sleeve Shirt
• Conservative Tie
• Dark Socks, Professional Shoes
• Very Limited Jewelry
• Neat, Professional Hair Style
• Go Easy After-Shave
• Neatly Trimmed Nails
• Portfolio or Brief Case” (e.g. 2)

Conclusion In all, does dressing for success truly lend to you finding a successful occupation or career? Well for the most part, it does actually. If you don’t dress appropriately to earn a good first impression, then the opportunity to obtain that position you dreamed of has just passed you by, because you didn’t foster that favorable first impression that typically lends to successful acquisition of the job position. Hence, it is highly important that you follow the guidelines provided to dress for a job interview or any interview for the matter. Remember the old saying, “It is much better to be overdressed than to be underdressed (or undressed).” Dress for Success!

Dressing stylishly is not easy; however, it is a great investment and gets the person going everyday asking the same question: what should I wear today? In order to dress stylishly, you ought to have the essentials mastered, such as tailored fit, color coordination and self-confidence. I feel like every individual should dress with style because the way they dress reflects their personality and dressing with style means that you are doing it your way. ...Preventing Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections Angie Rees Grand Canyon University: NRS-433V March 28, 2015 Abstract Central line-associated bloodstream infection is a primary laboratory confirmed bloodstream infection in a patient with a central line at the time of, or within 48 hours, prior to the onset of symptoms and the infection is not related to an infection from another site. Central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) occur when germs enter the bloodstream through a central line. A central line is a tube that is placed in a large vein to give fluids, blood, medications, or nutrition. CLABSI continues to be one of the most deadly and costly hospital-associated infections in the United States. Many lives have been saved in the past decade due to improvements. However, these infections continue to occur and more occur in other areas of the hospital outside of the ICU. One in four patients die with CLABSI complications. These serious infections usually cause a prolonged hospital stay with an increased cost. The average CLASBI cost an additional 0.6-2.7 billion every year. Some patients may be at higher risk for developing a CLABSI due to their length of hospitalization before catheterization, duration of catheterization, underlying medical conditions, location of catheter placement, or other factors.  It is important that both the patient and the healthcare providers take the appropriate steps to help prevent an infection. Briefcases, Bags, and the Image of Professionalism

...An image can say a lot about a person. It influences how we feel about ourselves as well as how others see us. There are different factors that go into creating a professional image and a significant one is the way we dress. By dressing appropriately, we can create a professional image that others admire. One essential item that every man and woman should have is a carrying case, such as a briefcase or handbag. By having a bag to hold important documents and supplies, the person is perceived as more organized and professional than someone who does not have one (Doche, 2013). Different bags have become more popular and trends have changed for both men and women. Men are no longer using classic box briefcases (Smith, 1997). Instead they are moving towards a sleeker briefcase with compartments for mobile devices (Doche, 2013). Women, on the other hand, are starting to use more gender-neutral handbags ("Working Guide,” 2013). For both genders, the use of an appropriate carrying case is essential to maintaining a professional image. Therefore we must discover what type of carrying case is appropriate. To begin our analysis, we will first analyze the type of carrying case that is appropriate for men. Traditionally, most men carried a fairly large, hard, hinged box briefcase (Smith, 1997). This served the purpose of safely transporting papers and office supplies (Smith, 1997). However, times have changed. As early as the 1990s, the introduction of electronic portable devices has greatly...

Dress for Sucess

...| Dress for Success | | | Melinda Hart | 3/15/2013 | | When one talks about the idea of dressing for success in the workplace they are talking about the fact that it is the first thing the interviewer will see. Being that the first impression will inform ones perceptions about their ability to perform a job. When an interviewer sees someone who is well dressed and who appears with confidence, the interviewer thinks positive thoughts toward them. If one is dressed sloppy and not professional it gives the image that they are not someone who takes time with their work and may even be sloppy. What is the most appropriate dress for a job interview is a common question one will ask. What you wear advertises to the world the skills, competencies and qualities they can deliver. A professional appearance helps to convey a positive image, generating respect from others and improving personal impact. A basic gray, navy blue or black suit is widely acceptable outfits. If you are planning on using a skirt suit it should be knee length and straight but not tight fitting. If you do not have a suit then a simple dress with a jacket over it is acceptable. You should press your outfit and not have wrinkles. Clothing that reveals too much cleavage, your back, your chest, your feet, your stomach or your underwear is not appropriate for a place of business, even in a business casual setting. The accessories that you team up with your attire should be appropriate for a professional...

Nowadays, offices are more lax with the trending fashions but do not realize that by letting their employees dress as they do now, they may be losing business. Managers should emphasize on the professional dress code so that the business will look more professional, they won’t lose customers or any business relationships they have with vendors and also so that they can avoid any type of controversy or altercations within the company. When new customers come into the place of business of a professional they expect to see the employees dress the part of that qualified, skilled employee who will be taking care of their business. Dressing professionally shows the level of sophistication that they hold and can affect the credibility of the business. I believe it also affects how a person perceives that employee’s intelligence. If they are not dressed appropriately, that customer may think that the employee is not intelligent enough to dress accordingly so how intelligent are they to handle their business needs?
