Students of different personalities come into the classroom everyday with their own set of values. As such, teachers are challenged to handle various individuals’ actions, of which some can be totally unexpected, during their course of teaching. For those students with behavioral problems or who constantly react negatively towards any person for no obvious reasons, a teacher’s decision on how to handle the situation makes a significant difference. During my days of schooling, I am glad to say that I had encountered an extremely caring and benevolent teacher who not only succeeded in developing a positive teacher-student relationship with an ex-classmate with suicidal ideation but who had also helped steered her away from taking her own life.
Melissa was my classmate during our third year of secondary education. Right from the first semester of the school year, she was very passive in class and simply refused to be involved in any group activities. Melissa was not like her usual self to those who knew her back in the lower secondary days. Then, she was known as the extrovert who took an interest in almost everything. When Mr Tan, our mathematics teacher, consulted our form teacher, she did not really think that there was anything seriously wrong with Melissa and even concluded that she was just throwing her tantrum around in class. Mr Tan begs to differ. He knew that another classmate of mine, Sandy, was Melissa’s confidant and proceeded to ask if she knew anything that contributed to Melissa’s change of behavior. Sandy was reluctant to share much with Mr Tan at that point of time.
However, Sandy poured out every detail of Melissa a few days later. She noticed some scars on Melissa’s wrists as well as signs of mutilation on her inner thighs. Melissa even told Sandy that it would be better if she herself were off dead. Beside

...commonly used in many Asian countries, applies most to the Singaporean context and, often, one of the first few words that foreigners pick up in Singapore. It is not surprising that it has now been added to the oxford dictionary as an English word. In a recent survey conducted by advantage and British-based Barrett Values Centre, 2000 local residents were polled to see how they perceive the Singapore society today. ‘Kiasu’ was the top choice for the vast majority of the respondents in the survey. Originating from the Hokkien dialect, Kiasu can be literally translated as ‘afraid of losing out’. Singapore’s insistence on meritocracy resulted in its expulsion from Malaya in 1965. Speaking at the National Achievers’ Congress 2012, Robert Kiyosaki cited Kiasu-ism as a possible reason for Singapore’s meritocratic rise as a nation. However, one cannot dispute that there are negative connotations of this quality.
