For my first connection, I am going to be talking about a text to world connection between the slaves to the slavery in the United States of America during the industrial age. These two are connected, because of three reasons. The first reason the two events are connected, is because of the similarities of how the slaves were treated in the novel ‘Eleventh Plague’, compared to how they were treated in the United States. In both the novel and in America, the slaves were hurt if they did not work to their slavers liking. They were also abused on a consistent basis in both the novel and the real world. The women had scraggly hair and was wearing a short dress that clung to her. She was so thin I could see the shadow of her ribs” (pg. 26) . I can infer that they are poorly fed if they are that thin. The African American slaves also didn’t eat much because their slavers didn’t care about them and it was the least of their worries to feed the slaves. The final reason why the two are connected is because both slavers are rich and have a lot of power. I know this because the book stated, “Then men were gathered around the fire with a deck of cards and a bottle of liquor. Their clothes looked military to me” (pg. 25). If they have a bottle of liquor that means they have a lot of money to be buying liquor instead of food and ammunition. Also if they have military clothing on that means they have a lot of power because they have access to a lot of guns, ammunition and vehicles. The two are connected because of three reasons. The first reason why they are connected is because both the kids in the movie and Stephen and his dad have to travel by foot a long distance to get to their desired destination. In the movie kids have to walk for hours to get to school. Sometimes that have to climb mountains too. Stephen and his dad have to do the same thing to get to different places to scavenge. Sometimes they also encounter dangerous animals. African children need to watch out for all sorts of different animals and Stephen was once nearly attacked by a bear. Another reason why the two are connected is because they are all poor. They all have old and dirty clothing. Stephen and his dad don’t have much food or supplies. Stephen has never even taken a bath until he came to the town. One kid in the movie had a wheelchair that was made up of an old pair of wheels and a lawn chair. Some kids in the movie have to dig far enough in the ground until they see water and then they fill up their plastic buckets. The kids had to do all this just to drink some dirty water. Unlike us we just turn on a water faucet and we get clean drinking water. The final reason why Stephen and his dad are connected to ‘On my Way to School’ is because they both have to keep going when they are injured.
