The end of work written by Jeremy Rifkin discusses the decline of the global labor force and the dawn of the post market era. The book is divided into five sections; ‘The Two Faces of Technology “,”The Third Industrial Revolution”: The Decline of The Global Force”, section 4:“The Price of Progress” “The Dawn Of The Post- Market Era” he organized the text in sections so that the readers can understand how the end of work started declining in stages has we read through each section. With that, the analysis of the critique is focused on section 1, which focuses on the current technology revolution viewed from the standpoint of its effect on employment and global economy. Rifkin described that the world is entering a phase in history, which is characterized by the rate of unemployment in the world today. He said “ Unemployment is now at the highest level since the great depression of the 1930s” (Rifkin 2005: xv). He furthered mentioned how the growing numbers of underemployed or unemployed and new extrants into the workforce find themselves victims of technology development and new technologies are replacing labor force. Rifkin wrote, “Today, all three of the traditional sectors of the economy: agriculture, manufacturing, and service are experiencing technological displacement, forcing millions onto the unemployment rolls”(Rifkin 2005: xvii).
I think that the book The End of Work is very informative, and it helps provide an understanding to the unemployment rate in the world today. Rifkin makes the most important point on how technology today is taking over the work force, there by causing the mass of unemployed worker displaced from the economy. This argument raise the question why is technology such a powerful force? I think that the reason why technology is such a powerful force to our economy is because a lot of technical advancement has improved and have made

The End of Work - the Decline of the Global Labor Force and the Dawn of the Post-Market Era

...This book is well known in the field of economics, public policy and environmental studies. If the title alone doesn’t draw you in, then maybe the following question will: Could society’s age old demand for increased productivity and efficiency lead to “The End of Work” as we know it? As the saying goes, be careful what you wish for. In this eye-opening book, Jeremy Rifkin argues that improvements such as automation, computerization and re-engineering mean that more goods and services can be produced with less human labor. If less people are working then who will buy all these new products that hit the market at an accelerated rate? The author's organization webpage (www.foet.org), retrieved on March 3rd, 2011 provides a brief biographical sketch on Jeremy Rifkin as an American economist, writer, public speaker, political advisor and activist. Employment Status of Casual and Agency Workers

...are sent by that agency to work for a third party – an end user. Is the agency worker an employee of (a) the agency, or (b) of the end user? (a) The worker- agency relationship In Construction Industry Training Board v. Labour Force Ltd [1] it was held that unskilled or building workers hired by employment agencies were not in a relationship of employment with the agency. The end-user paid the wages to the agency, and had the right to control the men as to what to do, and to require the agency to remove a man at three days notice (or in the case of misbehaviour, forthwith). The court considered it decisive against the identification of an employment relationship with the agency that no control was exercised by the agency over the workers. This approach was followed in Ireland. In Brightwater Selection v. Minister for Social and Family Affairs [2] a Social welfare appeals officer held that a worker sent by an agency to UCD to work in the administration section worked under the control of the agency: ‘the requirement to notify them of any changes in relation to responsibility, hours worked, pay, grievances… to produce a time sheet’. However, the High Court held that these minimal administrative obligations were not equivalent to control. The High Court held that in determining whether control exists, the alleged employer must not only have the right to tell the individual what work to do, but also to dictate the manner in which this work was to be done’. There was...

Time and Attendance

...PREFACE The world today is witnessing a new kind of revolution—the Information Revolution—ushered in by technology. This revolution is far more sweeping than any other revolution in history in its reach and influence, bringing fundamental changes in all aspects of our life. Information technology is the use of computers and software to manage information. As computers grew in speed and capability, a number of general-purpose database systems emerged. In the present context, I have great pleasure in presenting “Factory Time Attendance Management System (FTAMS)” program. This program is used by factories of all sizes. The FTAMS works with RFID time attendance devices to manage working hours of employees recorded in the devices in order to pay their wages. FTAMS could protect a factory from payroll fraud and provide both employer and employees with confidence in the accuracy of their wage payments. The present system is necessarily providing a convenient, simple, and comprehensive program on managing the time and attendance system for the benefits of employees and the factory. I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you to your education. Writing this book has been a lot of fun for me and I sincerely hope that you get a lot out of it. I have tried to be balanced in presenting both the advantages and disadvantages of some of the new ideas. I encourage you to adopt a similar open and critical stance when reading this book. You are welcome to e-mail me at so.sereyboth@gmail...

Hr Operations

...Downey Kates Associates M 22 any HR functions have gone through the process of transformation over the past decade. This redefinition of the work of HR is intended to allow a more strategic focus on talent management and organizational capability while systematizing HUMAN RESOURCE PLANNING 29.2 and controlling the cost of transactional work. Little formal consideration has been given, however, to how these new complex HR organizations should be configured to best achieve these goals. This article highlights the operational challenges created by the most common organization design used by HR departments—the business partner model—and presents an emerging model— the solutions center—that is intended to address these flaws. Each model is described and discussed and a set of considerations for the HR leader is offered in order to maximize the effectiveness of the chosen organization design. Over the last decade there has been a profound shift in the work of the HR function. The publication in 1997 of David Ulrich’s Human Resource Champions spurred HR leaders across various industries to realign their organizations in order to undertake “strategic business partner” work. At the same time, a focus on cost-cutting and efficiency aimed at staff functions in general—and at HR in particular—has pushed much HR transactional work into shared services or to outsourced vendors. For many HR departments, this process of “transformation,” as it is popularly called, has been a wrenching...
