...Katie Krause M. Thune Abortion Paper 7 December 2008 Abortion Debate According to the philosopher Jane English, the typical question, “Is the fetus a person?” is irrelevant. The reason why it is irrelevant is because of many different reasons for what qualifies something to be a “person”. There are many factors in what most identify as a person. They say there are five parts: Body, Mind, Reason, Social, and Laws. The biological factors are things such as having a genetic code, and being able to eat and sleep is a necessity, because it is what creates life. Psychological factors such as consciousness and the ability to use language is another part of what they classify as “personhood”. Rationality factors are having the ability to reason, and decipher between right and wrong. To be a person, you are equipped with rights from the law. Also, you have to be a social being, which is having the ability to love things and people, and have feelings such as compassion and hatred. The reason why saying a fetus is a person and that is why you cannot kill it is irrelevant, is because not every human being qualifies for all of these parts of being a “person”, and so just because a fetus does not qualify for all of those factors, doesn’t mean it is or is not a person. A person in a coma does not have the ability to communicate, nor does an infant, but they are still people. What IS relevant in the debate about abortion is having psychological similarity and bodily continuity. The psychological...

...Technological Advances and U.S. and Middle Eastern Nations Technological advances are advances in anything from computer technology to everyday things people would have around their houses, to military equipment. When speaking about people in the U.S. and the Middle Eastern nations, which group faces a bigger impact from technological advancements? This is a question that people in both regions would be interested in learning about. These advances are able to have an impact on somebody’s life and change it forever. While some experts believe the people in the U.S. receive the greater impact from technological advancements, other experts believe people in the Middle East contain the greater impact. Although most people would assume that the Americans are more sensitive to technological improvements because they have more money and live in a more powerful region, these people misinterpret the fact that Middle Easterners are indeed able to benefit from these improvements as well. Technological advances can have a very big impact on the lifestyles of students in the United States and the Middle East. They are able to give students access to the world wide web, contain better school supplies, achieve more success in school, etc. Experts such as Samuel P. Huntington, Pankaj Ghemawat, and Bill Maher believe that the U.S. students will receive the larger influence from technological advancements such as computer technology and new inventions that could help out everyday lifestyle...

...ID: 5681093 EC2 Section 15 Instructor: Nicholas Ferriman Argumentation Paper Thailand: from the outside Thai Sex Tourism: Are the Prostitutes to be blamed? “Unseen Paradise”, the promotion slogan entitled by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in 2004, intended to promote the resorts that are not spoiled by tourism. Entering to its website, finds the picture of Thai women -- whose back is smeared with mud -- looking over her shoulders at the painting of the topless Thai dancers (Johnson, 2007). This is where the heated debate arises, the caption beneath it says: “Heaven is now possible and right here within your grasp”. Because of the displaying picture that was supposed to be promoting Thai tourism, is rather seen as a provocative image. Foreign travellers view and perceive it as a selling of the commercialized sex, and see Thailand as the sex-offer country. The picture even increases the international reputation of Thailand as a “Brothel of the world”. A number of international tourists -- especially male -- visiting Thailand as they are , apart from other reasons, motivated by sexual services that are available at their hand in bargained-price (Hall, 1996). Normally, sex workers are the most focused medium in this industry. Many people condemn and marginalise them. They also claim that prostitutes are solely responsible for the worldwide fame -- or rather shame -- for the sex industry establishment of Thailand. However, the opposition asserts that, for the sex...

...Color Psychology Paper Research Question: How does color affect one’s mood? Review of Literature: Colors may just seem simple and unimportant, but they affect our daily lives more than we may know. If someone is feeling angry, it could just be because they’re angry, or it could be perhaps that they are surrounded by or looking at the color red. That’s right! People’s moods can change just because they are looking at different colors! There are many theories on how just a simple color can change one’s whole mood. According to Johnson (2007), color does affect mood by producing certain chemicals and stimulating different feelings such as hunger. For example, blue can make one feel calm because it releases calming chemicals, and red can make one hungry because it is an appetite stimulant. Yellow can make one feel irritated, and it is a fact that people lose their temper most in yellow rooms. However, pink is tranquilizing and can make one feel weak. In conclusion, Johnson says that depending on the color, one’s body can do things (like producing chemicals) that cause a certain emotional reaction (mad, sad, etc.). Another idea, by Smith (2007), is that the effect color produces is based on what one’s body does in response. For example, yellow is mentally stimulating, and activates memory, whereas red increases confidence. Also, brown can make a person feel orderly and stable, while a dark blue can make one feel sad. Therefore, Smith says that different colors do in fact change...

...D’Aesha Rahming English Language Synthesis Essay (AP Paper) Read the following sources (including the introductory information) carefully. Then write an essay that develops a position on whether or not there should be specific texts that all students of high school English must read. Synthesize at least three of the sources for support. Countries are like bags of assorted candy. They are packaged with persons that possess an array of personalities, skin colors, religions, cultures and ethnicities. Simply put diversity is common worldwide; even more so in schools. A school is a miniature country. It has its own food services, events, community, leaders, and laws. However, the proximity of one individual to another is increased. Therefore, persons in most cases are immediately exposed to the differences around them. With that being said, some people believe that because of this kind of exposure, it is of high importance that schools find a way to encourage students to embrace the various differences instead of disowning or degrading them. One way America attempts to do this is with the variation of books that pupils read in schools. Despite this, in some nations, it is standard practice that specific texts are read in all schools. However, I disagree with this. By placing such restrictions on the reading materials of students, I feel that these students would be negatively affected. This is because the idea is becoming obsolete in this digital age. Also, because persons can...

...Nelida Vasquez CDDS 95 October 16, 2014 Dr. Crume Piaget Experiment I will be observing my next door neighbor’s daughter, Bella Ayarzagoitia, who is 5 years of age. The setting of the observation is at her house, on the kitchen table. I will be displaying two balls of play dough that are the same size. Furthermore, I will be changing the appearance of one of the balls into a snake and ask Bella if it has more, less, or the same amount of play dough. Piaget proposed in his pre-operational stage, conservation of matter, where a child comes to an important turn in their life where they start to use their cognitive evolution. Conservation of matter is defined as an understanding of substances that are equal in mass and volume, but due to the display it seems as it changed in quantity. I babysit Bella on occasions when her parents ask me too. When I went to her house to do the observation, I told her that we were going to play with some play dough. Bella is in kindergarden and her parents let me know that she loves learning and going to school. I said to her, “I’m going to roll two balls of play dough and you let me know if they are the same, okay.” Bella, “Okay, can you roll the pink play dough?” I said, “Of course.” I then rolled the two play dough balls and she let me know that they were the same size. I said, “Bell, “Why do you think these two balls are the same?” Bella, “They both look the same and are shaped like balls.” I told her I was going to roll one of the balls into...

...Authenticity. Authenticity is a word that could be described in so many different ways. Some say it’s trueness while others say it’s legitimacy. Google even defines authenticity as ‘of undisputed origin’ and ‘genuine’. With reference towards people, authenticity to me is a person’s truth or self identity. There’s a quote that says “You were born to be real, not perfect”. I feel like being perfect is not cute anymore. I believe in authenticity because staying true is better than being fake. Growing up in Hillside, I was taught a lot of things. Being that Hillside is filled with a majority of black people, I learned a lot of things from many of my black friends. I also learned many things from my household. I has a father which I would like to characterize as a ‘thick african’ and a mother who also was African, however, because she taught in american schools and adapted to the lifestyle, she was pretty much like a normal American mom to me. These two backgrounds helped define me and I developed my authenticity. I kept that as my identity because I felt and still do to this day as this was my truth. I may talk a little different. I may dress a little different. And I may act a little different. But being different is normal. Nobody is the same. Keeping my authenticity became a struggle at times in my life. I once befriended a girl who at first I thought I could relate to because we both were a little bigger than the rest of the kids and many of the kids would mistaken one for the...

...Displacement is the redirecting of energy from an object that gives rise to anxiety to a safer, more acceptable one. Being angry at the boss and kicking the dog can be an example of displacement. The New World Encyclopedia defines displacement as an unconscious defense mechanism that shifts sexual or aggressive impulses to a more acceptable, or less threatening, target that can serve as an emotional substitute. The most classic example is a worker, angry at his boss, obviously unable to direct his anger or hostility to his intended target, comes home and yells at his wife. She, now also angry and upset, displaces her anger on the child, who then further displaces it on a younger sibling. Most often, we take our frustrations out on the people we love. Another example of displacement is how one person whom actually cares about...
