...Obedience is complying with an order from another person to carry out an action. Many studies have been conducted into looking at obedience in people and what factors in a certain situation lead people to obey. In 1963, Milgram carried out a study among 40 American males between the ages of 20 and 50 years old, with the study aim being wanting to find out under what conditions would different people obey to authority under. The participants were deceived into thinking they would be emitting electric shocks, to inflict pain onto an individual when they gave a wrong answer to a question; the question being a word matching query. The participant here played the role of a teacher and the learner in this case was in fact the confederate. The shock meter went up in pain voltages as the experiment went on and more wrong answers were issued. However, there was no real pain being inflicted, just the sound of the learner acting as if he was hurt. The experiment carried on until the participant refused to obey the orders being given to them, or until the highest shock voltage of 450 volts was reached. However, stern encouragement was given to the participant by the leader of the experiment to carry on going and issue out the shocks, even though it was putting the learner through a great deal of audible pain. The experimenter would tell the teacher ‘it’s absolutely essential that you continue’ or ‘you have no choice, you must go on’. It seemed that in fact these instructions from an authoritative...

...orders to carry out immoral acts even when they know it is wrong? Under what circumstances are normal everyday people obedient to authority? Research Aim: To find out if people would obey an unjust order to inflict pain on someone else. Research Hypothesis: That people would not be willing to inflict pain on one another simply because they were told to do so. Variables: IV, DV, Extraneous: Independent Variable Dependent Variable Extraneous Variable Proximity of the learner Amount of shock administered Closeness of the authority Duration of the shock Prestige of the setting Speed of the response Presence of rebellious peers Research Method: Forty male participants were selected after replying to a newspaper ad for an obedience experiment. At the beginning of the experiment they met a man called Mr Wallis, a mild-mannered man in his fifties; who was then hooked up to a charge generator. He was in fact a confederate. The participant sat in another room and tested 'Mr Wallis' on word pairs, when he got one wrong, the participant was to give him an electric shock. These increased as more incorrect answers were given from 15 to 450 volts. Each time a shock was given a pre-recorded sound played indicating Mr Wallis in varying degrees of pain, until after 315 volts there was an eerie silence. Each time they tried to stop Milgram himself encouraged the participant to continue (this was the authority figure). Subject Selection and Allocation: Both the learner and...

...So how did I take a site from 0-450 visitors per day (on the weekend mind you, much slower) and earning over $5 per day in adsense alone AND on the first page of msn for its main keywords in less then 3 weeks. Unfortunately I won t be showing this site as I did in the last post. Due to many reasons. Only a few now about it, and heck you could probably find it anyhow. (I know the investigative powers of the warrior forum) The first step that I take when looking at building a new site is the keyword research, and topic research. There are many ways you can go about doing this. My fav way at the moment is by using The Dowser tool, also I use wordtracker and even a free tool. http://www.123promotion.co.uk/ppc/index.php Once there, start running your list ideas through the keyword tool and look for something which has a decent traffic count in overture. (I choose overture as an example because it is widely recognized). I usually target niches with 80,000 upward searches per month for the main keyword. This way you are bound to be able to drive some good traffic to your site. The recent site I picked had 1,000,000 searches per month. Then I would plug in some of the top sites into SeoElite and find out how much seo the main sites are doing and how hard or easy it is going to be to beat them. Next thing I do is research affiliate products and adsense ads available for that keyword. The adsense ads you can do either in The Dowser tool. Or you can go to http://www...

...taught me a valuable lesson; even though my dog did achieve an obedience title he showed me there are greater things in life than getting that .Training your dog for the obedience ring is a lot of hard work. We trained for months working twice a day seven days a week. While we enjoyed training I wanted to earn that obedience title so bad I it was all I could think of for months. Uconn knew all the exercises he needed to perform inside and out, backwards and forwards. I went to the ring area with Uconn early in the morning. I wanted both of us to get accustom to the sights and sounds of where the obedience ring was set up. I had a book with me to try to so some reading to relax before we went in the ring. It was a warm August day. The building we were in was a pole building at the fairgrounds. It was damp and cool in the building and I wondered if the cool air was making me feel not so great. The obedience ring was set up with white gating all around it. It was a perfect square. The matting being used was rubber and a dark green color. We found a place in the last row. The area was crowded with spectators, other exhibitors and dogs. The judge was a woman. I had seen and shown other dogs under her in the past. She was very pleasant and smiled and welcomed us in her ring. For one thing the dog is very unpredictable. It takes a lot of hard work and patience to get your dog trained. I was at an obedience trial with Uconn. There was a little boy in a wheelchair. Uconn...

...Jen who outline some of the strengths and weaknesses that we found in the book while also highlighting areas of personal development. The book we chose was Love’s Executioner by Irvin. D Yalom. (first published in 1989) But first a little about the author. Born in Washington DC in 1931 to Russian parents, Irvin D Yalom spent most of his childhood indoors, reading books, avoiding the perils of his the harsh reality of his neighbourhood. After graduating from Boston University School of Medicine in 1956 he went on to complete his internship and his residency in New York and Baltimore. In 1962 Yalom began his academic career at Stanford University. Existential therapy Soon after this period he made some of his most lasting contributions by teaching about group psychotherapy and developing his model of existential psychotherapy. Praised by peers for his accessible and non technical approach in his writing, Yalom believes that the success of his story telling is down to having ‘a stream of brief human vignettes running throughout the text’ (www.yalom.com). “What do you want?” This simple question generates some of the most intimate answers, even between perfect strangers. I want to be loved, I want to live forever, I want the childhood I never had……… Irvin Yalom describes these longings and the pain that’s associated with life as “existence pain”. He believes there are four “givens” of existence, which are sources of pain: • Death (inevitability of death for...

...he neighborhood we are staying in may not be representative of the country, but nevertheless, in walking around the neighborhood, one gets the idea that Guinea has a strong commitment to education. There are several schools right around our house. In the same block, there is a private language school that teaches French, English and Spanish. There is a university a couple blocks away – the Universite Nongo Conakry. And there are other schools within a few blocks of our house. Yet, given that the illiteracy rate in Guinea is around 70 to 75 percent, one wonders how effective these schools are. We have driven past the national university on a few occasions, and I don’t know about the quality of the education there, but the facilities do not appear to be very good. I would suspect that the instructors are underpaid and probably many of them work only part time for the university. There also does not appear to be many bookstores around the city. We saw one and are trying to arrange a visit there, and there may be more downtown, but they are not too common. Most of the vendors in the city seem to be small storefronts that open directly to the sidewalk, or small tents and kiosks right on the sidewalk. They sell mostly necessities -- food, clothes, cell-phone cards and DVDs, along with services such as beauty shops, tailors, and the like. Open-air markets are common around the city, and there are no shopping malls that we have seen. I am very curious to see what types of books...

...If you tell yourself you’re going insane, going crazy, you aren’t. The only people that truly lose sanity are those that don’t know it and think that they are normal. I used to tell myself I was crazy, mentally ill. Until one day, I woke up and realised I was bringing my misery upon myself. I was contemplating my sanity daily when it was something I didn’t need to focus and dwell upon. If I recognised that I was crazy, I wasn’t gone enough. If I can perceive my sanity, I’m not crazy. So if you think you’re going to lose your hair and your skin pigment will go pasty white, you’re going to bring it upon yourself. In January through almost all of March, I was seriously depressed. After a series of seriously unfortunate events, I couldn’t think for myself. Yet I could formulate my own opinion of the world. A sick, distorted perspective. I viewed everyone as going to stab me in the back eventually. Everyone was bad, no one was good. Trust no one; you will only have yourself in the end. I couldn’t breathe under the pressure that was always there. I couldn’t focus on school, friends, anything. I fell behind in all of my classes, I became nonexistent in the eyes of many, and to the people that remained there for me I thought of as just being fake. Or I would push them away. My depression enveloped me. I love to write, it’s my thing. My passion. And in those times, I didn’t want to write, but I felt the ink pour from my skin, and it stained the paper forever. At some times my...

...How does the language of this poem reveal the writer’s attitude to planners and city planning? In this poem the writer conveys to the reader about her feelings towards cities and planners in the language she uses in the poem. Atwood starts the poem off in a calming a slow paced tone. The work “cruising” shows this as it is a calm and relaxed word. The poet had lured the readers into a false sense of security because after the first two lines the calm tone changes completely. “What offends us is” is the turning point in the poem it shows that it is not really the positive poem that we hoped it to be. Also the word “offends” is very strong and emotive it makes the reader feel like the place has done something wrong or horrible. The writer wants this as it manipulates the readers to feel the same dislike towards the place like she does. The writer then goes on to describe what the place in like in a disapproving and negative tone. She uses words like “pedantic” for the houses which stresses how ordered, level and perfect they are. The trees are “planted” and “assert” which show that nature is twisted and plotted in neat spaces where convenient. This makes the place unnatural because nature had been forced into a neat and orderly form. The grass is “discouraged” and clamped down so it can grow in the perfect way people want it to grow in. It does not reach its full potential; it is stifled by the grass cutter. Nature is not supposed to be like that, it should be wild and free...

...Discuss, illustrate and reflect on three main concepts of Existential psychotherapy and their application to practice. To illustrate my discussions and reflections I must use a case from a helping relationship in everyday life. * Existential therapy is based on philosophy (Deurzen, 2012). The techniques used in this type of therapy is not specific, it is based on our existence in life. The conflicts that are experienced in life are based on the givens of existence. The therapeutic relationship is between the client and the therapist and most importantly it highlights the client’s personal freedom in deciding their own direction. 0 Some of the key figures regarding existential psychotherapy are Rollo May, Irvin Yalom, Martin Heidegger, Soren Kierkegaard, Friedrich Nietzsche, Viktor Frankl, Jean-Paul Sartre (Van Deurzen, 2012, May, 1969, Cox, 2012) 0 Some of the basic concepts of extentialism are freedom and responsibility, isolation, meaninglessness, nothingness, uncertainty, death, anxiety, just to name a few (Cox, 2012). In this essay three of these concepts will be discussed and illustrated followed by a case study to illustrate how these concepts relate to existence. 0 Freedom and Responsibility 0 The fact that we are responsible for ourselves mean that we have to make choices and to take responsibilities for our actions. In this respect we have to make decisions where we have...

... The breeze is chilly and the scent of the falling snow is fresh. Today was the twentieth of December, which means starting from tomorrow it’s a winter break. I looked out the window and thought what I should do in these couple weeks off. Should I play video games all day, go on a trip, go hiking, hang out with friends? Who am I kidding? I have no friends. Well… at least no real friends. Ever since I moved from Canada to Montana I didn’t really know anyone. And I have to admit, I never had many friends in my old school either. “BRING, BRING,” the school bell rung and class has started. I took a deep breath. Every time my first class starts, I keep thinking about my experience and how much I disliked Weaverway High School because the teachers were horrible. “Get out your math textbooks and turn the page to page sixty nine, and do it now!” yelled Mr. Denham. The students silently and briskly grabbed their books out of their bags. “Man, that guy needs to chill,” whispered Daniel. “I know right,” Nolan replied. Daniel pulled a plastic spoon out of his pocket and then, he started catapulting small pieces of paper at Mr. Denham. Everyone started laughing. “Who is shooting paper projectiles at me? Answer me now!” He was furious like a hornet that has just found its nest destroyed. I stood up and took the blame. “Mr Denham I did it. I was just mad that I forgot to do my homework.” I kept my eyes shut. “Well, aren’t you quite the troublemaker? Ryan, I shall send your parents a note...
