George Bush's 'Got Milk?' Campaign

Anti-war movements are social movements that, in most cases, start in order to oppose a nation’s involvement in an armed conflict. They work through protests in an attempt to pressure the government to cease their involvement in a particular war or conflict. Though the war began in 2003 with the US’s invasion of Iraq, the protests themselves started in 2002. They were held in many cities world wide, often coordinated to occur simultaneously in which 36 million people across the globe took part in almost 3000 protests against the Iraq War. In relation to the dissertation question it is important to look into the visual work that was produced to express discontent to the Iraq War and in particular the leadership by former US president George …show more content…
To fully understand the power of the poster it is important for the viewer to have some knowledge of the ‘Got Milk?’ campaign. The mentioned advertising campaign was created by the advertising agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners for the California Milk Processor Board in 1993, that was encouraging the consumption of cow’s milk. It is one of the most recognizable advertising campaigns therefore it makes it a lot easier for the viewers to grasp its concept. In the case of this poster the milk moustache has been replaced with oil, that immediately changes the perception of the Bush from an authoritative government figure to a demon like one, that alludes to his passion for oil. The typeface on the poster was left the same as the one used in the original adds, which is CgPhenixAmerican. This makes the subversion more obvious and recognizable for the viewer. The only difference is that in the ‘got oil?’ poster uses the upper-case ‘g’ instead of a lower case one, as it is the original adds. We can suspect that this is because starting a phrase with an upper case letter makes the question more powerful, but having that said this can possibly be a coincidence. This depiction of
