Instead of the sun meaning the physical sun, in actuality, it symbolizes hope. On page 1 of All Summer in a Day it states, “she knew that thought they remembered a warmness, like a blushing in the face in the body, in the arms and legs and trembling hands”. Although in this quote they are talking about the children dreaming of the sun, all of these feelings are also associated with the thought of hope through a bad situation. In addition to this, the reference the sun makes to the feeling of hope also alludes to the theme that there is always a light, even through the darkness. When the rain finally stopped and the children saw the sun for the first time in 7 years, “they looked at everything and savored everything” (page 4). The children were

Persuasive- Summer/Winter

...Summer vs Winter in Wisconsin COM 170 Summer vs Winter in Wisconsin Do you like summer in Wisconsin or is it winter that gets you excited? Do you like frigid temperatures or is it the hot sun that gets your goat? For me, summer is where it’s at. I am patient for 272 days every year waiting for June 21st to come around (even though I start my summer as soon as the local schools let out), and when it does, let the good times roll and the festivities begin! Winter, on the other hand, is a dreadfully cold and treacherous event that I would really rather not deal with or talk about; I will talk about it though just to let everyone know how I truly feel about it. The weather itself is an absolute disgrace and the season in general is horrible (except for Christmas, snowmobiling and sledding)! For some people, winter is their favorite season, but for me, it is summer and its glorious weather that gets my vote. In the summer, the days start to get longer; the sun rises earlier and goes to bed later. There are sounds of children running around playing tag, screeching hysterically because they are about to be “it”. Neighborhood dogs are barking incessantly because of all the commotion and just because they can. The air starts to smell sweet, like that of freshly cut grass. To me, one of the best parts of summer is the sweet smell of freshly cut grass. Nothing beats walking out of your house on a warm summer afternoon, having the sun instantly...

Driving Summer Vs Winter

...Driving in the winter and driving in the summer have many differences and one thing in common. The main differences revolve around weather, visual clarity, and animals. The single thing that they have in common is the fact that there are hazards, and when preparing to drive on the roads no matter what season, it is important to hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and follow all the laws of the road. When Mother Nature takes her course there is no way to fully predict the outcome. Finny: A Short Story

...conversation we had before going to that life-changing meeting of the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session. I thought of it differently then. It’s certainly not the way I know you meant it now. I plotted this battle, this war between us up in my head, but I thought that you were out to get me. I untruly pieced together that you were trying to beat me, to be the better man in the end of our final year. I didn't think. It’s not your nature in the least bit, Phineas. All you wanted to do was jump together, to mark a symbol of our friendship, to mark us completing our Devon studies together. It was a peace treaty, an innocent suggestion; not meant to offend me or challenge me in any way, but I was filled to the brim with rage and conspiracies. I wanted to believe it was a blind impulse. I truly did Finny, and in some ways, it was. In some ways, it wasn't. It’s an ever-changing thought in my head to this very day. You knew I had done it from the second you felt the shift in the branch, and you turned to look at me with interest, a little bit of confusion, as your body turned and you fell. I can never think of those few seconds in regular time-only in slow motion. In my head I had won the war, following that instant. I dove into the water without fear. I’m ashamed to say that I felt proud, even accomplished. It’s now I realize: it was...

The Letter I Shouldnt Write

...Thats not what I feel now. I haven't talked to you in over 3 months. Seems like a short time when you date someone for 5 years on and off. Sometimes I still feel my racing heart. I remember when I fell in love with you for the first time. It was a hot summer day. We were both baking in the sun. Laying lazily on our kayaks. I had kayak 5. You had the blue one. Our hands drifted next to each other. Even if it was the slightest touch, I saw myself marrying you that day. Having kids. Growing old. Now I cant even remember the sound of your voice. I wish you hadn't of run away. Being over 1000 miles away is hard for anyone. I wish you would have waited just one more day because that one more day might have been different. I wish I hadn't yelled at you so much to get a job. I was only trying to make you the best person you could be even though you were already being him. I wanted the sky for you. The world for you. I would have taken a bullet for you. Maybe even a grenade (Bruno Mars would agree). I wish you would have explained more. I wish you would have given me a warning before you ended it all. I wish you wouldn't have told me that my father said yes to you when you asked for my hand in marriage. I wish things were like that day at the lake. Ive come up with many solutions....

Dreading the Unfamiliar

...first time my family went back to visit our home country was in the summer of 2004, when I was nine years old. The second time, and most recent, was this past summer. My two trips were extremely different and if I hadn't gone again last summer, my opinion of the place would be completely different right now. The summer of 2013 was an uncertain and awkward stage in my life. I had just graduated high school and was about to head off to college. Right in the middle of all this confusion, my parents decided it would be the perfect time to visit Bangladesh as a family. I, however, did not want to rush my process of getting ready for college by leaving the country. But this was a trip that had been prolonged by my family for a couple of years so there was no way I could get out of it. And so, I was about to visit a country that I was not so enthusiastic about. What started out as a dreaded vacation, ended up being one of my most treasured experiences. In hindsight, I realize my attitude was the problem when we first landed in Dhaka. I did not want to enjoy anything and I was very irritable. Everything, from the heat, the mosquitoes, the humidity, and mostly the crazy amount of people everywhere was irksome. Being one of the smallest countries in Asia, the amount of people the country can hold is unbelievable. The minute I stepped out of the airport doors, I was hit with the stench of sweat and poverty all around me. My uncles welcomed us with a car...

What

...“anyone lived in a little how town” ee cummings • non-conformity • form = function o Poe’s unity of effect o poem = unique, does not conform to any poetic standards, grammatical rules, expectations • songs: o Justice & Independence, Jack & Diane (JC Mellencamp) o The Dance, The River (Garth Brooks) E. E. Cummings' "anyone lived in a pretty how town" tells the story of anyone. The name has a double meaning; anyone could be anyone in the dictionary definition sense, and could be seen as a singular entity, reinforcing the theme of isolation the independent individual has from the rest of society. The events all occur in a "pretty how town". "Pretty" connotes a mere façade, describing the superficiality of the town's inhabitants. "How", an adverb, is used as an adjective here. It could be describing the extent of the town's prettiness, but a better reason is that it describes the routine humdrum of the town's activities, since "how" also means "in a method or manner". The juxtapositions continue into the next line, "(with up so floating many bells down)". The rhythm of the line and the vowels emulate both the motion and the sounds of bells. This line occurs again later in the poem, and its function here is the same as it is there - to signify the passing of time. The next line is an ordered list of the seasons, also symbolizing the passing of time, describing anyone's activities as occurring continuously. The activities...

Road Trips

...Thomas1 Travis J. Thomas Ms. Janet Call English 112 October 6, 2013 Out of all possible road trips – the best one is by car. The moment when you finish packing, put everything inside the, sit inside it, buckle up look at your family sitting next to you, smile and…go! And then begins the most wonderful part of the road trip. It is not the place you are heading to – it is what you see from the opened window of the car. The best part is when you leave you home before the dawn. The DAWN! I really like to meet the first flashes of the awakening new day. Long before the dawn when you look in the direction of the east you see how the sun informs the world about its arrival. It paints the dark sky with its beams and the last stars disappear. I love to meet the sun, while driving out a road trip in a car. I am amazed by its game and its morning flashes of the sun rays. First, you notice a crimson-red stripe on the horizon. Then, the stripe becomes orange, pink and eventually the sun fills everything around. And it always seems like for the first time in your life you see a green leaflet, the trees, which grow right next to your car window and a light gaze over the nature which waking up to meet a new day. Beach

...The Beach On a hot summer day, you would go out to the beach to enjoy the view, the weather and the water. It was a sunny Friday afternoon when I decided to take my observations with me out into the world. I find that my imagination wanders off on its own and takes trips to the ocean without me, so I figured my body had some catching up to do. With a snap of my fingers and a short ride through the mountains. I found myself at my childhood playground, Santa Cruz Beach. The location is near the ocean side, steep rocky hills to the left and sand for days to the right. I ran down to the sand as fast as I can and without hesitation I laid my towel down upon the tiny grains and chips of rocks that the oceans might had turned into sand over the years. I took a moment to put my life on hold and gaze at what nature had to offer to me. I reflected upon all of the other places I could have been instead of standing with my toes curling in the warm sandy beach and smiled in appreciation of my situation. It was perfect weather out for a day at the beach. The clear sky didn’t have a single cloud to block the rays of the radiant sun. I could sense the feeling of ultra relaxation from the outstretched deep blue canopy above and the penetrating warmth that emanated from the sky and wrapped around my skin like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night. Every once in a while a cool breeze would pass by and ease away the sun’s intense heat bath for brief moment. I could feel grains of sand...
