Slavery

...Slavery: Using Research to Inform U.S. Anti-Human Trafficking Efforts by Maureen Q. McGough NIJ study examines the challenges facing the criminal justice system when combating human trafficking. T rafficking in persons is modernday slavery and exists in virtually every country in the world — and the United States is no exception.1 Almost 150 years after the 13th Amendment abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, there are still men, women and children enslaved into labor and commercial sexual exploitation in the U.S. (see sidebar, “Understanding ModernDay Slavery,” on page 27). In recent years the worldwide human trafficking problem has attracted significant political and social attention. Awareness-raising initiatives such as the United Nation’s Blue Heart Campaign2 encourage involvement and action to fight human trafficking on a global scale. In the U.S., the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign unites anti-human trafficking programs and offers resources for law enforcement and the public to help raise awareness and provide muchneeded training.3 Despite growing awareness of the issue and an influx of resources from such influential bodies as the United Nations and other intergovernmental organizations, foundations, nongovernmental organizations and the U.S. government, the field is still hampered by its inability to measure the size and scope of trafficking.4 The data used to estimate the prevalence of human trafficking in the U.S. are lacking in scope...

Decision Making Case Study

...Decision-Making Case Study The looming changes in health care are a frequent topic in many meetings with health care providers. Budget cuts are not just a speculation but are a reality. Decision-making to provide quality patient care with less money is a challenge at best. The Informed Decisions Toolbox can assist administrators and managers with evidence-based decisions that will allow patients to receive the quality care they deserve while reducing expenses. The Informed Decisions Toolbox The Informed Decisions Toolbox (IDT) is the result of a research study to aid managers with making evidence-based decisions that improve organizational performance. The IDT has an approach of six steps to decision-making (Rundell, et al, 2007): (1) framing the management question, (2) finding sources of information, (3) assessing the accuracy of the information, (4) assessing the applicability of the information, (5) assessing the actionability of the evidence, and (6) determining if the information is adequate (p. 325). As a facilitator for the use of evidence-based research in decision-making, the IDT assists decision-makers with estimating how operational and strategic decisions will have an effect on the organization. Evidence-based decision-making is not new to the health care industry. Clinicians have incorporated evidence-based research for years when making patient treatment determination. The use of evidence-based research for decision-making in other realms of healthcare...

...learning is a case study that involves discrimination towards a patient who is part of the traveling community. This practice based learning is a case study that involves discrimination towards a patient who is part of the traveling population within our society. My group colleagues and I decided to use the same methods of collecting information as in the previous case studies. I feel very frustrated because there is a lot of ignorance within our society, lack of information and understanding of people who disregard others because of were they come from. Firstly I make reference to the NMC’s guidance on anti-discrimination practice; As a qualified nurse I am personally accountable for my practice, and when caring for my patients I must; 1.1 Respect the patient as an individual 1.2 Protect and support the health needs of individuals 1.4 I have a duty of care to patients, who are entitled to receive safe and competent care. 2.3 As a registered nurse I am personally accountable for ensuring that I promote and protect the interests and dignity of patients and clients, irrespective of gender, age, race, ability, sexuality, economic status, lifestyle, culture and religious or political beliefs. 2.4 I must promote the interest of patients. This includes helping individuals and groups gain access to health and social care, information and support relevant to their needs. Formal and Informal Networks

...Formal and Informal Networks Within the System Kara Cook-Tate Walden University There are so many resources available for the human service worker and their clients. Having the knowledge about these resources is the determining factor of whether it’s going to make you or break you. You have to have set goals in mind. Dedicate the time it takes to research and network. Figure out what will and won’t work for each individual client. Some of the resources available will work for some but not necessarily for everyone. As I read through Chapter 8 in our text, I started to finally see a much bigger picture than what I was expecting. I know the job is going to be difficult within itself, but that’s exactly what I’m hoping for. When I’m not really interested in something, I get bored and lazy and start to procrastinate and not give it my all. School is a prime example. It’s tedious and I loathe it. I achieve the minimum just to get by. With this job, there are so many avenues to explore and discover. I’m also a busy body and love to stick my nose in other peoples’ business. This is why this is the perfect job for me. According to the CASA case study there are a lot of formal networks being utilized. Since CASA is a non-profit agency, let’s take a look at the top of the list for the formal networks. The agency has to get its funding from somewhere. So where should we turn to for that? There is state or federal funding, and then charity as in donations, fund-raising...

Research Methods

...One 7th July, 2016 Accra, Ghana How do you choose a good research topic? Give 5 examples of a good research topic and justify your choices, i.e. problem issues in each topic and why they must be researched upon. (Not less than 2000 words). 1. Research defined The Oxford English Dictionary, 2002, defines research as ‘the systematic study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions’. According to Zina O’Leary, 2004, a research is a process that needs to be actively managed. The main aim of research is to find out the truth which is hidden and has not yet been discovered. Research is therefore undertaken to gain familiarity with new insights into a phenomenon (i.e., formative research studies); to accurately portray the characteristics of a particular individual, group, or a situation (i.e., descriptive research studies); to analyse the frequency with which something occurs (i.e., diagnostic research studies); and to examine the hypothesis of a causal relationship between two variables (i.e., hypothesis-testing research studies). 1.2 Research topic defined According to Laura Morrison, 2014, a research topic is an idea or theory that is expressed as a statement, a contention for which evidence is gathered and discussed logically. One of the most important concerns in choosing a thesis topic is that the topic speaks to an area of current or future demand. A research topic should be of interest to...

Forensic

...(Bartol & Bartol, 2012: 6). The concept of forensic psychology can be misunderstood, because the definition does not explain much. The easiest way to explain forensic psychology is to break it down into its subspecialties and describe where psychological knowledge can be applied. There are five subspecialties of forensic psychology, namely police psychology, psychology of crime and delinquency, victimology and victim services, legal psychology and correctional psychology. I will discuss legal psychology and correctional psychology. · Legal psychology Legal psychology is the study of human behavior relevant to the law. This subspecialty of forensic psychology consists of those theories that describe, explain and predict human behavior by reference to the law. Bartol & Bartol (2012) described that early in a case when attorneys are preparing for a trial and gathering information psychologist can be called in to testify. Main roles of a forensic psychologist in the USA includes, acting as a consultant to law enforcement, acting as trial consultants (jury selection, case preparation and pre-trial publicity), presenting psychology to appeal courts, doing forensic assessment and acting as an expert witness (insanity defense, competence to stand trial, sentencing, eyewitness identification and child custody etc.) Expert witness as a role in legal psychologist A major role for forensic psychologist is to serve as an expert witness in both the criminal and civil court.
