...The Effect of African-American Students Socioeconomic Status on how it Affects College Retention and Graduation Rates at Historically Black Colleges and Universities Abstract With Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) graduation rates at the lowest they have been in the last decade I have become concerned. It makes me wonder what is causing this and what needs to be done in order to change this. While reading an article from The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education (JBHE) I found out that out of the thirty-seven of the four year HBCUs only four of them have a graduation rate over fifty percent. These institutions are Spelman College with a rate of seventy-nine percent, Howard University with a rate of sixty-four percent, Morehouse College with a rate of sixty-one percent, and Hampton University with a rate of fifty-four percent (JBHE, 2012). The purpose of paper is to find out what are some of the factors that are playing a major role in the graduation and retention rates of African-American students at HBCUs and what can be done to help increase these numbers. The Effect Students Socioeconomic Status on High it Affects College Retention and Graduation Rates The first thing that I wanted to look at was the family background of the average African-American student attending a HBCU. I wanted to know how their socioeconomic status directly affected their overall performance, and if the parental educational attainment affected the student’s success while...

...African-American College Students: Personal History, Struggles, and Graduation Rheon Gibson Northern Illinois University Abstract In this report, I discuss the importance of African-American college students in higher education realms and why the topic appeals to my interests. I will also identify trends in research questions, methodology, and research findings; regarding three identified themes; Personal History, Struggles, and Graduation. In addition, I will provide the reader with an evaluation/critique of the existing literature, including; 1) contributions of literature to the field, 2) overall strengths, 3) overall weaknesses, 4) missing elements, and 5) what are the next steps for research. African-American College Students: Personal History, Struggles, and Graduation Introduction Importance to the Field Educational attainment amongst African-Americans is a crucial concept that not only affects African-American communities but it also affects society as a whole. Education provides a solid foundation for individuals to experience personal growth, increase one’s socioeconomic status, and obtain professional careers and licensures. Obtaining higher education does not begin upon admission to an accredited college or university; instead, it begins when one is first introduced to the educational system. This introduction can be in Kindergarten, Pre-K, the first year of home school, or wherever the first fundamental steps of acquiring a higher knowledge of comprehension...

...Bridging the Gap A study in Graduation Rates between African-Americans and Caucasians May 18, 2010 Cross-Cultural Psychology Education and Racism are two problems facing our youth these days. While there have been enormous strides in both there seems to be a negative correlation between the two. As the education has gotten better in America for all students of all races, there seems to be a growing divide in graduation rates between the two of the primary races; Caucasians and African Americans. Can this be linked to a psychological feeling of inferiority in one race and the superior complex of another? Can it be an imbalance of support or funds toward one group as opposed to another? Or is it just a simple lack of intelligence for a specific group. I tend to believe that it is a combination of the former instead of the latter. Because of this I feel that in order to close the gap in African American/ Caucasian graduation we need to break the stigma of inferiority in the African American community and recognize troubles at and early stage to help prevent deviation from the learning process. I am an African American. male. I’m in my early thirties and currently am enrolled in some online classes trying to work toward my degree in Sociology. This is relevant because I have always been an avid fan of learning. Learning anything, it doesn’t matter. I had a great support system (parents, sister) that cared about my education and my well being. We weren’t rich but...

...it is very valuable to know the retention and attrition rate of that particular institution. This paper will discuss the importance of attending college in the African American community, the factors that contribute to the decision of what college to attend and the role diversity plays in that decision. Introduction Attending College is an observable, positive trend in the African-American community. The decision to attend college results in several important choices for future students, such as deciding which type of college to attend. There are approximately 1,800 four year colleges nationally. Certain factors students African Americans in particular should look for when choosing a college to attend: graduation rate, retention, academic achievement across the board, diversity and social environment. While many things contribute to a student’s decision to attend college, one of the most important factors is usually overlooked. That factor is whether that student is actually mentally prepared to attend college. Many students finish high school...

...I feel like it was just yesterday that we were at our kindergarten graduation, singing “First Grade, First Grade” to the tune of “New York, New York.” Now we find ourself at our eighth grade graduation about to go to high school. John Paul II Academy did not just give us an amazing education, but it also gave us amazing friendships. I remember a teacher saying that a seating chart was impossible because we are all friends. Kelsey said, “we have known each other for nine years and have never run out of anything to say to one another.” And that we have lost and gained many friends since kindergarten, but it's like we have know each other for our whole life. I have so many unforgettable memories that I created in or out of school, sadly I cannot fit all of them in this speech. Now who is ready to take a walk town memory lanE?...

The study also attempts to examine if there are any differences of gender, birth order and working experience with one's entrepreneurial intention. Comments: The objective of the study and the title of the journal is not so appropriate because the objective is on perceptions only whereas the title seems to be getting a dependable results. 3. PROBLEM The author cited no clear problem statements but the title seemed to be of educational significance. The problem was not clearly delineated and it required several readings to establish why the authors felt this study needed to be done. It was limited to the researchers' capabilities and resources. 4. REVIEW OF LITERATURE The author cited no clear review of literature; however, several appropriate references were used in the introduction section which referred to Thailand and Hong Kong...

...The Long-Term Labor Market Consequences of Graduating from College in a Bad Economy* Lisa B. Kahn Yale School of Management First Draft: March, 2003 Current Draft: August 13, 2009 Abstract This paper studies the labor market experiences of white male college graduates as a function of economic conditions at time of college graduation. I use the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth whose respondents graduated from college between 1979 and 1989. I estimate the e¤ects of both national and state economic conditions at time of college graduation on labor market outcomes for the …rst two decades of a career. Because timing and location of college graduation could potentially be a¤ected by economic conditions, I also instrument for the college unemployment rate using year of birth (state of residence at an early age for the state analysis). I …nd large, negative wage e¤ects to graduating in a worse economy which persist for the entire period studied. I also …nd that cohorts who graduate in worse national economies are in lower level occupations, have slightly higher tenure and higher educational attainment, I am grateful for helpful comments from George Baker, Dan Benjamin, James Heckman, Caroline Hoxby, Larry Katz, Kevin Lang, Fabian Lange, Steve Levitt, Derek Neal, Chris Nosko, Emily Oster, Yona Rubenstein, Hugo Sonnenschein, Mike Waldman and seminar participants at Harvard University, the University of Chicago, Yale University, and the Midwest Economic Association 2003...

...in lieu of, or in addition to, other criminal justice sanctions – when performed for this reason it can also be known as community payback; schools may mandate it to meet the requirements of a class, such as in the case of service-learning or to meet the requirements of graduation. High school graduation and community work Many educational jurisdictions in the United States need students to do community service hours to graduate from high school. In some high schools in Washington State, for example, students must finish 200 hours of community service to get a diploma. Some of the Washington school districts, including Seattle Public Schools, differentiate between community service and "service learning," requiring students to demonstrate that their work has contributed to their education. If a student in high school is taking an AVID course, community service is needed. Other high schools don't require community service hours for graduation, but still see an impressive number of students get involved in their community. For example, in Palo Alto, CA, students at Palo Alto High School log about 45,000 hours of community service every year. As a result, the school's College and Career Center awards about 250–300 students the President's Volunteer Service Award every year for their hard work. Colleges Though technically not a requirement, many colleges make community service an unofficial requirement for acceptance. However, some colleges prefer work experience over community...

...“Decided,” “Undecided,” and “In Transition”: Implications for Academic Advisement, Career Counseling, & Student Retention Joe Cuseo Introduction The objective of this article is twofold: (a) to critically review research on how students’ process of decision making with respect to selecting college majors and careers relates to their persistence in college, and (b) to tease-out practical implications of this research for improving the academic advisement, long-range planning, and retention of first-year students. The majority of new students entering higher education leave their initial college of choice without completing a degree (Tinto, 1993), and national attrition rates have been increasing since the early 1980s at two-year and four-year institutions, both public and private (Postsecondary Education Opportunity, 2002). At all types of higher education institutions, including highly selective colleges and universities, the most critical period or stage of vulnerability for student attrition continues to be the first year of college (“Learning Slope,” 1991). More than half of all students who withdraw from college do so during their first year (Consortium for Student Retention Data Exchange, 1999), resulting in a first-year attrition rate of more than 25% at four-year institutions, and approximately 50% at two-year institutions (ACT, 2003). Retention research suggests that student commitment to educational and career goals is perhaps the strongest factor...

...2013 Mandatory Financial Counseling Should be Provided to All College Students A growing number of college students today are facing unnecessary hardships upon graduation from college because they lack preparation, and the necessary skills needed to manage their financial circumstances. Lack of knowledge combined with distracting, busy study schedules have led many college students to make poor decisions, leading to costly consequences upon graduation. According to the Project on Student Debt at The Institute for College Access & Success (TICAS) in the college graduate class of 2011, two-thirds had an average of $26,600 in student loan debt upon graduation; at the same time the unemployment rate among new graduates was at 8.8 percent ("Average Student Debt Climbs to $26,600 for Class of 2011"). As a result, thousands of new graduates are forced to face huge amounts of debt on student loans that they cannot pay, immediately after graduating. There has been talk on Capitol Hill about federal loans to help graduates with their debt. Government involvement to fix the problem seems very retroactive considering that universities could and should have taken a more proactive approach. Universities must better prepare their students for the foreseeable financial hardships they could face upon graduation by providing mandatory financial planning counseling to all students. Without proper counseling and direction, it is very easy for students to make big mistakes when...

...| Undergraduate Program determines whether we pursue Post-Graduate Degree | Prepared for Dr. A. F. M. Ataur Rahman (ECO455.1) | Gazi Musayab Raffan ( 0910486520)&Mohsin Ul Amin Khan (0910894520) | Abstract The purpose of this research was to find out whether undergraduate performance and program of students reflect the motivation for continuing further education into Post-Graduate level. The research is based on questionnaire survey of fifty Undergraduate students from five different Universities in Dhaka. The questionnaire had 13 questions that were used to find out about the programs and CGPA of the participants as well as their plans for opting for Master’s level education. Since the survey was based on students currently pursuing their Bachelor’s we tried to know as much as possible about their plans for further education. In this regard we have assumed that the students who have planned out their further education in details have greater possibility of actually enrolling for Master’s level education. So we set the questions in such a way so as to reflect well the mental preparation as well other factors for planning ahead. Upon analyzing the data a correlation between the hypothesized constructs have been found in general. Though some questions had given us mixed results, taken as a whole the research does find a relationship between undergraduate performance and program and the continuation of further education. Acknowledgements Firstly we would like...

...The State of Oregon’s Nursing Schools and the US Nursing Shortage Analysis by Bridget Nickerson Introduction * The United States has been aware of an impending shortage in the qualified nursing staff of US hospitals since the late 1990’s. Oregon actively began addressing the problem in the early 2000’s. The state of Oregon has Sixteen Associate degree programs for Registered Nurses, and six baccalaureate degree programs (offered at 10 universities). There are currently four universities that offer RN to BSN completion programs; however, only Portland State University and Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) offer advanced degree programs (MSN & PhD). * I have a long-term career goal of breaking into the field of public health administration. From my experience working at OHSU I’ve gotten firsthand knowledge of how interconnected a health system is with the education and research institutions. I believe that it is this symbiotic relationship that will creates excellent care providers and in turn leads to exceptional patient care. Therefore, I chose this topic as I believe the relationship between Oregon healthcare providers and Oregon educational institutions is vital to the analysis and search for solutions to the current healthcare crisis facing the US. The Problem The United States is currently experiencing a Nursing shortage that will get exponentially worse in the next 10 years. The state of Oregon is no exception to this trend. There...
