...Final Reflection Paper Loretta Artis Concordia University The Ethical Educator EDDC 615 Dr. Ken Powers August 20, 2014 Final Reflection Paper When I think of myself and what my leadership style is, I have to choose servant leadership. As a believer when I hear the term servant, I usually usually associated it with the Bible. The term “servant” is defined as “a person working in the service of another.” When Robert Greenleaf first defined the phrase “Servant Leadership,” he pointed out that the difference between servant leadership and a leader was “a servant aspiring to serve and to take up leadership as result” (Greenleaf, n.d.) whereas a leader is defined as a person who rules or guides or inspires others. The servant leader’s main concern is to lead in a way that they are serving others by developing them as well as giving their undivided attention to their colleagues and those they serve (Spears, 1998). First Peter 4:10-11 suggests that everyone has the gift to be a servant and as good stewards it should be used to serve one another. One of the most interesting aspects that Greenleaf brings out is the wish to help others. In the servant leadership, leadership is secondary but the main focus is on the needs of others. This is one way to distinguish servant- leaders from all other leaders. Other servant leadership characteristics are: listening and understanding; acceptance and empathy; foresight; awareness and perception; persuasion; conceptualization; self-healing;...

...active in study groups and spend time in the Bible that I really understood and believed that we were all created in the image of God. Genesis 1:26-27 is the first time the phrase is used and it is only referenced 3 times in the Hebrew Bible yet the New Testament is foundational in the fact that Jesus is the image of God. The image of God is a reflection of the qualities that Jesus explemplified while he here on earth to his disciples and others; abundant in love, full of patience, kind to others, merciful to sinners, a humble servant, and forgiving even to his killers. I believe that we are all created in His image and that we are to all strive to explemfy these same traits as He lives in us. EXAMPLE 1: Working in international transportation I deal with many different cultures that look upon Americans as imperialist and arrogant. This is something that I strive daily to overcome not just with external customers but also with internal customers from various departments that have moved to Chicago from all over the world. Although the trait of humility was never my strong suit growing up I have learned to humble myself and allow God to lead so that others will see Christ in me. Throughout Scripture Jesus teaches us to be servants and to be humble. Philippians 2:5-8 is a great scripture as an example of how God made Jesus in His image and as a humble servant. About a month ago I was particularly busy at work. I felt what I was needing to get done was more important than what...

...1-Lifelong learning requires the ability to learn from life experiences. The spiral theory describes how knowledge is generated from experience through a cycle of learning driven by the resolution of dual dialectics of action/reflection and experience/abstraction. The learning/experience spiral guides growth and development through a life time of a leader. This process is portrayed as an idealized learning cycle or spiral where the leader “touches all the bases” experiencing, reflecting, thinking, and acting in a recursive process that is sensitive to the learning situation and what is being learned. 2- a- Experience is not just a matter of what events happen to an individual; it also depends on how he/she perceives those events. Perception affects all tree phases of the action-observation-reflection model. Observation and perception both deal with attending to events around him/her. People are selective in what they attend to and what they perceive. Reflection deals with how we interpret our observations and the explanations we develop for the behaviors or actions we attend to. In order to benefit from an experience, a leader should ask "what did i do?" after the action has been made, observe what happened; the results and its impact on others/followers, and reflect on it at last checking how he/she feels about it and look at it now. b- If the leader understands the differences that make people unique, he would be able to use those individual skills to achieve the goal...

...2014 Abstract Biblical Integration: Servant Leadership Servant leadership teaches that there must be a balance between serving and leading; a focus on putting the needs of others first (Spears, 1996). The philosophy enriches the lives of not only individuals, but builds better organizations by making it a priority to serve others. The greater contributions of quality service exemplify the determination to create an exceptional institution (Greenleaf, 2009). Providing service to communities is one of the primary focuses of a servant leader, which will develop and enhance more self-growth in their communities. Servant leadership is an act of service, and the embrace of feedback as a source of useful information on how to better serve people (Blanchard & Hodges, 2003). Greenleaf’s revolutionary view on the new topic of servant leadership offered a shift from the traditional role of leadership (Duby, 2009). Part 1: Greenleaf’s Theories Robert K. Greenleaf popularized the term servant leadership, in his 1970 essay, The Servant Leader (Spears, 1996). According to Duby (2009), Greenleaf envisioned servant leaders as being driven and motivated to serve first with the end result being an empowered, serving society. Greenleaf introduced the term ‘servant leadership’ and proposed that great leaders are first servants to others (Spears, 1996; Dierendonck, 2011). Greenleaf believed that real servant leaders emerged because of their yearning to help others (Liberty University...

...observers around the globe. The final paper for Philosophy of Corporate Culture focused on the steps necessary for successful change implementation. This paper will expand upon the idea of Servant Leadership and whether it will help or hurt change implementation within a given organization. Prior to any discussion about the qualities, actions, and implications of being a servant leader, we must first take a look at its modern day origin and definition. The phrase “Servant Leadership” was originally coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as Leader, an essay that he first published in 1970. In that essay, he said: “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. That person is sharply different from one who is leader first; perhaps because of the need to assuage an unusual power drive or to acquire material possessions…The leader-first and the servant-first are two extreme types. Between them there are shadings and blends that are part of the infinite variety of human nature” (Greenleaf Center for Servant Leadership, 2012). Though the term servant leadership is a modern phrasing, the concept is derived from a biblical perspective that Jesus exemplified in his life and ministry. Jesus, in Matthew 20:26-28 says it very succinctly, "You have observed how godless rulers throw their weight around, how quickly a little power goes to their heads. It is not going...

...These two elements describe the way professionals can make decisions on how to confront the issue at hand. One is Reflection in action. Here a professional can use the experience at hand by forming possible theories in their mind and working around them through various sources of knowledge to find a solution. In the case of this pupil, this is the best notion of technical rationality that was used. This is because once this teaching assistant saw him and was able to empathize, she sought to find information about how to confront the situation. This as he describes it "Learning on your feet." It is technically displayed by this teaching assistant who researches and finds information, which he, in turn, uses it to help the...

...Reflections on Nutrition YOUR NAME INSTITUTION Reflections on Nutrition This class helped me realize that one of the major keys to health and happiness is healthy nutrition and exercise. All assignments played an important role in convincing me to start implementing a balanced nutritional plan in order to maintain a healthy weight. Starting with the first assignment “Healthy Eating Plan”, I learned that appropriate nutrition not only guides me to a learned dedication, but it also leads to a lifetime practice on the way to a healthy extensive life. After submitting the assignment I was aware that proper nutrition can be achieved only through consuming all necessary nutrients in different amounts and that some nutrients are more important than others. For example, protein broken down to amino acids serves as unifying enzymes, antibodies, vitamins, and hormones; carbohydrates including fiber is the energy supplier to the body which in turn spreads it to the brain, central nervous system, and red blood cells; fibers’ function is to prevent diseases such as coronary heart disease and diabetes; fats also supply energy and increase the body absorbance of vitamins. The recommendations gathered from MyFoodPyramid has been a guide in balancing my individual nutritional needs with physical activity and allowed developing a plan that maintains a healthy weight and prevents disease appearing. The assignment on Dehydration...

Several paragraphs will explain the topic that you are discussing. The paper will prove or disprove the purpose statement. There will be many citations, references and information which will lead the reader to understand what the paper is about. The body must be relevant to the subject, with clear and concise thoughts. Jargon or very technical terms should be explained so the reader does not become confused. Do not attempt to make the paper meet the required length by using "fluff" - repeating sentences or details in several different ways, but saying the same thing. Research needs to be done, and, in a really good essay, good research and a strong knowledge of the topic will show. The writer must also make a smooth transition between the subjects or paragraphs. Basically, one idea leads to another. For example, a paper on animals could link the essay together by...

...objectives. Since the main focus of the study is on the importance of guided reflection and reflective training to promote student teachers’ critical reflective thinking, it therefore, seeks to address the underlying premise of reflective practice, the defining terms as well as the related studies so far in the area of interest. 2.1 A Perspective of Effective Teaching The concept of effective teaching underpins the goal of this research study. According to Arends (1994, p. 9), effective teaching is defined by four sets of attributes namely knowledge-base, repertoire, reflection and life-long learning. These four attributes of an effective teacher are illustrated as follows: * Effective teachers have control of knowledge bases on teaching and learning and use this knowledge to guide the science and art of their practice. * Effective teachers command a repertoire of best teaching practices (models, strategies, procedures) and can use these to instruct children in classrooms and to work with adults in the school setting. * Effective teachers have the dispositions and skills to approach all aspects of their work in a reflective, collegial, and problem-solving manner. * Effective teachers view learning to teach as a lifelong process and have dispositions and skills for working toward improving their own teaching as well as improving schools. (Arends , 1998, p. 9) Repertoire Reflection Lifelong learning Knowledge base ...

...specify the theory that best fits our leadership practices. In this paper the leadership style of President Abraham Lincoln will be discussed along with a self-reflection how his style was similar to my leadership methods. Servant Leadership Theory The basis of this leadership style reveals a philosophy that leaders should be servants first. The basis of servant leadership theory in order to be effective the leader has to place the needs of his or her followers, customers, and the community ahead of their own interests. The qualities within this type of leader allows for them to implement their leadership style by allowing them to serve in some capacity. There is a belief that leadership is initiated from within. The distinctiveness of servant leadership is for the leader’s instinctive wish to lead or guide others through serving. It is their desire to raise the level of moral principles of those that are followers. Short of these core characteristics, a leader will not fit the servant leader style. Admired Leader Assessment Abraham Lincoln The element that distinguishes a servant leader is the moral and ethical component. A servant leader leads with a moral conscience which directly affects the behavior of the leader and followers. Unlike the other leadership types servant leaders are able to serve others in a more ethical manner while pushing toward the goal regardless of how difficult the situation may become just as President...

...THEO104: Module Seven Reflection Essay Title Page 1 THEO104: Module Seven Reflection Essay Michelle A. Woycitzky Liberty University THEO104: Module Seven Reflection Essay 2 I. Introduction To define yourself as a Christian is to believe in God, Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and the text of the Holy Bible. Many believers think that this is all it takes to be welcomed into Heaven and enjoy the afterlife in peaceful bliss with their maker. Much of what has been learned in this class these past two months has given me the opportunity to explore Christianity beyond face value, as it should be explored. The true model Christian delves into the inner workings of the scripture and promotes the promises made by God when one lives their life as a messenger of that scripture. Education is the only way to make a person aware of what it truly means to be a Christian. In reflecting on the concepts learned in this class, a series of questions were presented, three chosen, then answered on the basis of what I have learned. The first question I chose was, Does the Bible have authority? Through the Doctrine of the Bible and arguments that the Bible is the Word of God, this question will be answered along with the information in Towns book. Secondly, I chose, Why are personal testimonies important in sharing the gospel? This topic was of great interest to me because I am capable of explaining it...

...Edwin Friedman’s A Failure of Nerve Review Sarah Jo Gomez- Lorraine CMLE 601 Dr. Sarah Drummond Who wants to lead this committee? Often this results in silent. Perhaps there will be the one among many who raises their hands after a deep breath and reluctantly says, “I’ll do it.” Edwin Friedman’s A Failure of Nerve seem to be answer the question posed by Sheryl Crow, “If it makes you happy, then why the hell are you so sad? “ If God is good all the time, all the time God is good then why are so many congregations unhappy? The answer is the lack of leadership. Great leadership in Ministry allows the children of God to feel safe as they figuratively pass through the Red Sea of their lives to the dry ground that God has promised them. The Israelites needed Moses. Our congregations need us. They need us to lead by focusing on the “…leaders presence and being, not technique and know-how.” Every child of God has a purpose placed on their lives, leadership in Ministry is important in order for the will of God to move forward through God’s children. In this module I was educated about characteristics of great leadership. The topics that left the biggest impression on me are the ideas of self-differentiating, equanimity and how to reframe the question. In the military there is a common mantra whispered among females, “ Don’t let them see you cry. “ Trying to suppress emotions seems to be a sure fire way of gaining emotional momentum of the feelings that are coming up in an already...

...Mortality form the very basis of Attwood’s “The Age of Lead”? In this story, we are very often presented with the re-occurring motif of one’s own mortality. To be even more specific, in this story we can see a reflection of how we all deliberately avoid this very basic aspect of our own lives- our own mortality. This motif is evident in many parts of the story, but in particular is quite evident in the following segments of the story. Firstly, we have the protagonists main focus of interest, the documentary on the life and death of John Torrington. This documentary in its self is a very literal presentation of the theme of mortality. We also have a progression of events that are covered in the protagonists life. Much like one’s own life, these events are all based around mortality. Finally, we have the climax of the story, that is the protagonists coming to terms with the nature of mortality. So now, let’s begin to focus on the first aspect of mortality in this story, John Torrington. From the first paragraphs of this story, we are subjected to the concept of mortality. We are immediately brought into the world of John Torrington and the failed Franklin Expedition. The atmosphere of the story is thick with the concept of death and mortality. We are given very vivid descriptions of mortality and death. One such example is how the body of John Torrington is described to us. The use of various metaphors serve to further enhance this description of death and despair...
