...2. How did they attempt to gain their rights? There were many negative situations and actions towards the LGBTQ community especially in the 1960’s. Many people did not respect lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, and queers. In 1964, the first LGBTQ organization was formed in San Francisco which was called National Transsexual Counseling (NTC) and was later developed into the Society of Individual Rights (SIR) that opened up in 1966. The organization helped the LGBTQ community gain many rights. LGBTQ people attempted to gain their rights by riots against the police even til this day. Also they have started organizations, protests, and much more to aim for their rights. The gay pride parades gave people encouragement “to come out...

...The Dramaturgical Process as a Mechanism for Identity Development of LGBTQ Youth and Its Relationship to Detypification -Erica Rosenfeld Halverson According to Erica Halverson, “youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) construct and present complex identities by using a method known as the dramaturgical process”(Halverson, 635). The dramaturgical process consists of the telling, adapting, and performing of personal stories. This study involved the About Face Youth Theatre (AFYT), a Chicago based organization that works with LGBTQ youth on the dramaturgical process. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between the dramaturgical process and the psychosocial process of identity development. There were forty different youth who participated in the 2003 season of AFYT, ranging in age from thirteen to twenty, and with different ethnic backgrounds. This study mainly focused on eight of those participants. Of these eight, four were female, three were male, and one was transgender, all with varying ages. The independent variables of this study was the sexual orientation of the participants and the participants’ views on how they wanted to be represented in front of an audience. The dependent variables were the scripted scenes that would be performed by the group for a public audience. The main findings in this study was that the use of personal stories allows youth to engage in the change events described...

...On December 22, 2010, President Barack Obama repealed the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy, which legally recognized LGBTQ+ identities and allowed them to be open about their identity and serve in the United States Armed Forces. The repeal of this policy essentially gave validation to LGBTQ+ identities and changed this idea that LGBTQ+ individuals should be hiding who they truly are in order to fulfill social standards and the federal policies that were once in place. The repeal of this act empowered LGBTQ+ individuals and influenced more positive progression in regards to LGBTQ+ rights. On February 23, 2011, just two months before the Arkansas Department of Human Services v. Cole case, the Obama Administration successfully decided that the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional. The Defense of...

...Imagine this, the LGBTQ community and heterosexuals switch places in society. Straight people are treated the way gay people are treated now. You are one of the straight people. You are out in public. People see you with your partner and they look away or shoot you a dirty look. Sometimes even throw a slur or two at you. Maybe even chase you down the street, threatening to kill you. Imagine this: You are in a bar, with some of your other straight friends. Just having a good time, relaxing. Next thing you know, you are crawling on the ground. You hear gunshots and screams of pain. You pass by your dead friends. You see their bodies are painted with bullet holes and blood stains. All this happened, just because you were straight. How would you feel, constantly getting made fun of and hated, just because of the person you love or have feelings for. It would feel great wouldn’t it? Or would it feel like no one accepts you for who you are. This is what happens to the LGBTQ community in the world we live in. They are mistreated, killed, and loved and supported by the creation of laws and LGBTQ rights leaders. You wouldn’t want it to happen to you, so why do you let it happen to them? Stand up. Be strong, and make your voice heard. Let the world know, that you will stand for change....

...What would your life be like if your community didn’t accept you? LGBTQ individuals get judged all the time because they’re different. Is it right to get treated differently because you like the same sex or transgender? The answer is no! Just because your sexual orientation is different than others, it doesn’t mean you’re different; in fact it makes you brave for coming out. In today’s society more LGBTQ are coming out and being accepted. Coming out can be a lifelong process, especially for transgender because the person has to take medications to change their appearance. It takes months before the person starts to see changes. Eventually the person will undergo surgery to have a mastectomy or genital removal. LGBTQ stands for lesbians, gays,...

...The LGBTQ+ community has been fighting for their equal human rights for years now. The community has made a lot of headway, specifically in the homosexual community. Homosexuals were recently granted the right to marriage equality by the United States Supreme Court. This is a right that in some states, was already granted to the homosexual community. Now, the entire country has to honor, accept, and allow same sex marriage. Even though this is a right that should have been granted to this community a long time ago, there was still a long and tiring fight for it. Now, the same thing is happening but with homosexual parenting. As we all know, two people from the same sex can not create a child. So in homosexual communities, if artificial insemination...

...have a better support system. A difference between LGBTQ older adults and straight older adults is that they tend to have fewer children and as a result they often lack caregivers. Like the younger group of LGBTQ members older members also have the fear of being discriminated against especially in the healthcare settings. For the current older LGBTQ, they are an important unique group compared to other older LGBT members that will come after them. The current older LBGTQ members are considered to be the baby boomers and silent generations of LGBTQ. They grew up in an area that was considered prelibation which was before the Stonewall riots. Therefore, they may need health service much more than any other LBGTQ populations, but they are hesitant to pursue the healthcare due to the stigma. However, unlike the younger group, older LBGTQ members report having a better mental health. People who know about their own sexual orientation tend to have less mental health problems, older members usually already address their sexual orientation in their youth and as a result are comfortable with who they are. This is consistent with prior research that indicated that older gay men were just as likely to be in a relationship...

...I’ll never be able to understand how someone can tell another person that they can’t identify or love as they please. Why so many people believe that someone who loves someone of the same sex, or identifies as something other than what is written on their birth certificate, don’t deserve the same rights as everyone else is beyond me. I believe that members of the LGBTQ community deserve the same rights and respect as everyone else, contrary to the popular belief that they are “diseased” or “ seeking attention”. Even though I am not a part of the LGBTQ community myself, many of my friends are and I believe that discrimination against them is equal to the discrimination against someone because of their skin color. In the 9th grade, I witnessed...

...Teaching LGBTQ inclusive sexual education shows that humans have a diverse array of sexual orientations and gender identities, regardless of a person's moral views. Teaching one sexual orientation, and ignoring the others, and suggesting that a heterosexual marriage is the only acceptable relationship for sexual activity makes invisible experiences for LGBTQ people and presents an inaccurate view on how human sexualitly works (Goodman). Sex education can be one of the few, if not the only, reliable source for information on a person’s sexuality and sexual health. Multiple studies show that well designed and well-implemented sex education can reduce the risk of behavior and support a positive view on sex, reducing teen pregnancy and STI rates. In the United States, the STD and HIV rates are extremely high in certain...

...both gay men as best friends ,who offered comedic relief in awkward situations. There has been a shift in the portrayal of the LGBTQ community after Ellen DeGeneres revealed her own sexuality through her character Ellen Morgan in her sitcom Ellen. After Ellen’s coming out episodes emerged, the LGBTQ community was no longer in the background and now “gays are witty sidekicks, girls next door, doctors and lawyers, city officials, and teenage experimenters, garnering Emmys, accolades, and great ratings as they invade the family home through the ubiquitous tube”(Skerski 365). Ellen helped transition the role of queers from witty supporters, to significant serious characters. She made “sexual orientation [be the only] important aspect of her life, not the sole purpose of it”(Gibson, Alexander, Meem 310). Media has come a long way in the 20th century but many still don’t agree with the way queers are portrayed through media. Although shows have changed, people are still not satisfied in the way queers are viewed. “Queer theory asks that we take very seriously the representation and construction of sex and sexuality in a wide variety of cultural venues”(Gibson, Alexander, Meem 258) . By putting more LGBTQ characters into media it “normalizes” who they truly are representing them with heteronormative themes. Shows such as Glee have come out with multiple LGBTQ characters. They have lesbians, gays, and a...
