Anyone who knows me knows I have a passion for marriage which is why I share so much. I share the things that help me with the hope it can help someone else. Marriage isn't easy and anyone who is married knows I'm telling the truth. I firmly believe that your marriage is what you make it and put into it. I don't pretend to know it all or that my marriage is perfect. We have had our share of issues and we still do but we both are determined to make it work and make it the best it can be. We both have had to learn to look at ourselves when things weren't going right. It's amazing how things change when you start looking at yourself and how YOU can change or the issues YOU have as opposed to always looking at what is wrong with your spouse or what they are or aren't doing. Us wives especially seem to have this innate drive to "fix" our husbands or tell them what they are doing wrong and how they should do it. They don't need to be fixed. We need to look at ourselves and let God show us where we are wrong first or what we can change in ourselves. I'll never forget years ago when I read the book "The Power of a Praying Wife". One of the first things she said was to stop focusing on praying that your husband will change, but rather pray that YOU will change. That was so hard to hear and it challenged me. I realized that's what I was doing wrong. I really thoughtthat if my husband changed, then everything would be better because of course, I couldn't be the problem. Lol. Boy was I wrong. I came to find that I was controlling, manipulative, self-righteous and an emotional mess just to name a few. I had to take a good, hard look at ME. Now if you aren't willing to put aside that pride that can get us, then you are in for some hard knocks. Pride will tell you that you're fine and you've dealt with all your issues and the issue is your spouse. I love what my Pastor says' " If

...Stay at Home Moms -Breaking the Stereotypes 9/13/2015 In today’s society, no longer is it common for a woman to make the decision to stay at home and school her children. There was a time when this was far from taboo, but in the year 2015, stay at home mothers have found themselves in situations where they have to prove their worth. Women in the SAHMs (Stay at home mothers) community are labeled as lazy, are said to have it easy, are dumb, moochers, and many other stereo types. In all actuality the life of a SAHM is quite the contraire. In the 20th century the term “house wife” was more so used than the term Stay at home mom. Now, in the 21st century we changed that term because it seemed as if we knew nothing but the walls inside our homes. We are married to our husbands, not our houses. Women in the 1950’s rose to the term house wife and wore it proudly. During this time, the women who worked outside of the home were looked at as some scientific phenomenon that we didn't understand. The role of women in the 1950’s was repressive and constrictive in many ways. Society placed high importance and many expectations on behavior at home as well as in public. Women were supposed to fulfill certain roles, such as a caring mother, a diligent homemaker, and an obedient wife. The perfect mother was supposed to stay home and nurture so society would accept them. (R.C.2005) “Most of the time, when people ask, I tell them that I work from home. Technically this is true, because...

...insights into the determinants of polygamy. Since I will try to establish some correspondence between theory and facts around the world, the focus will be on the more common type of plural marriage, polygyny. The theory developed in the first section is based on Becker's economics of marriage. Although anthropologists (for instance, Goldschmidt, 1974) and sociologists (for instance, Rosenthal, 1970) have previously used the concept of marriage market, they have not developed the theoretical implications of Research in Population Economics, Vol. 2, pages 321-350 Copyright © 1980 by JAI Press Inc. This paper expands on Becker's analysis of polygamy both in theory and in empirical work . An extensive review of cross-cultural evidence, largely based on studies by anthropoligists and sociologists, hopefully provides some new insights (Section IV). The nature of these international data and findings makes serious econometric analysis difficult, if not impossible, but the abundance of some of the evidence hopefully compensates for its lack of robustness. Previous applications of the economics of marriage to a specific culture related to that...

Factors Promoting Higher Divorce Rates

...Demographic and Economic Predictors of Divorce Building on research conducted in prior decades, family scholars have continued to document the major risk factors for divorce. These factors include marrying as a teenager, being poor, experiencing unemployment, having a low level of education, living with one's future spouse or another partner prior to marriage, having a premarital birth, bringing children from a previous union into a new marriage (especially among mothers), marrying someone of a different race, being in a second- or higher order marriage, and growing up in a household without two continuously married parents (Amato & DeBoer, 2001; Bramlett & Mosher, 2002; Bratter & King, 2008; Sweeney & Phillips, 2004; Teachman, 2002). Although these variables predict divorce, one cannot assume that they are causes of divorce. Perhaps the greatest controversy continues to surround the role of premarital cohabitation. Some researchers have found that premarital cohabitation is associated with negative marital outcomes only under certain circumstances, such as when it involves a nonmarital birth (Tach & Halpern-Meekin, 2009) or occurs with a partner other than one's spouse (Teachman, 2003). On the basis of research from the 1990s, some researchers assumed that the cohabitation “effect” is entirely because of selection factors—traits that increase the likelihood of cohabitation as well as the risk of marital discord and divorce (Lillard, Brien, & Waite, 1995). More recently...

For a woman, this is one of the happiest days of her life. During the Middle Ages, women were born solely to marry and to rear children; most importantly, to produce a son for their husbands. Most arranged marriages, or betrothals, were arranged by the parents of the bride and groom. This type of arrangement was often the cause of abuse and adultery which would lead to the ending of the union by either divorce or desertion. Unfortunately for women, they had little or no rights...

Polygamy.....Deviant or Not so Much?

...Canyon University: Everyday Sociology June 23rd, 2012 Polygamy: Deviant or Not so Much? Polygamy is a marriage that includes more than two spouses. If a man has two or more wives, it is called polygyny. If a woman has two or more husbands, it is called polyandry. A marriage that includes multiple husbands and wives is often called a group marriage. The difference between polygamy and bigotry is that spouses in polygamist relationships generally know each other and often live together. In a polygamist relationship, only the first wife is a legal marriage and the subsequent “marriages” are spiritual but not recognized as legal unions. Bigotry is the practice of a man having multiple wives in different states that usually do not know about each other. It is more of a legal issue because only the main or first wife is eligible to receive benefits such as social security payments and pensions. Polygamy was a common practice among Mormons for many years starting around 1831, but in 1862 Congress declared it to be illegal. Many Mormons have continued the practice since then but generally stay out of the public eye and keep to themselves as to evade persecution and arrest. In 2010, TLC began to televise an American reality show titled Sister Wives. The show follows the lives of a Polygamist family who lives is Utah. The husband, Kody Brown has four wives and seventeen children. Fourteen of the children are biological and three children are step children brought...

Marriage Practices

...Marriage Practices Michelle Moses ANT 101 Prof.  Larissa Begley November 28, 2013 Marriage Practices Decades ago, what was known as the traditional wedding would be between one man and one woman. Today, traditional and other marriage practices have changed tremendously. When it comes to marriage, all cultures respect and honors its own marriage practice. Many marriage practices may be confusing and misunderstood from an outsider but will always be sacred within his/her tribe. In today’s society, we tend to self-judge another’s culture marriage practices because it is not the traditional marriage that we were brought believing. Even though we have become narrow-minded towards other forms of marriage and have come to believe that any other way wrong, marriage practices will always be performed differently. While some cultures believe in arranged marriages and same sex marriages, other cultures believe in multiple marriage partners which is known as polygamy. In some types of culture, all three of these marriage practices are accepted. Because of this, we should research farther into various cultures and find out what the reason is behind performing the different martial practices that they do because marriage will still continue in several different ways. Even though traditions might be similar to a particular point, the meaning and the marriage practices behind them are very different. When we do not have the power to choose who we want our future mate to be...

A Wife Among Wives: A Girl Sort Of

...Why Polygyny? Polygyny is defined as marriage of one husband with more than one wife. Culture plays an enormous role in how this works and the relationship between the people involved. A movie clip from “A Wife Among Wives” and the fourth act from the podcast “I Enjoy being A Girl, Sort Of” both start out demonstrating cultural backgrounds. One is in a place where there is exposure to the elements where a family needs additional members than your average nuclear family. The other is from an urban setting where a woman married a man with multiple wives who not only shared responsibilities with each other but were also best friends. They each have their own benefits and challenges, and the descriptions that are given demonstrate multiple differences as well as similarities....

Paper

...November 5, 2012 Human Ecology 230 Dr. Jada Brooks The Culture of Polygamy Marriage is considered to be a universal concept that society has accepted. In society, some type of union or pact allows two or more individuals to become a union in purpose of maintaining a family or economically joined household. there are many ways to conceive the term “marriage”. In some cultures, it is perceived as acceptable to have more than one husband. However, the most common deviation from a marriage of two individuals, is the marriage of one man to many wives, which is referred to as polygamy. This form of lifestyle is found in cultures that are defined by certain religions. The two common religions that permit the marriages of one man to many wives are the Islam and the Mormons also known as Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints. This paper will examine the lifestyle and culture of polygamy in our society. To many individuals, the conception of polygamy, the practice of having more than one wife, conjures up the notion of “harem” women as sex slaves, servants, and baby making machines. Although most of our society view these types of arrangements as immoral and illegal, polygamy has been apart of the world’s culture and is continuously accepted in areas such as Africa, India and Canada. In our society, nothing is more upsetting to some than diversity in an area that has been tradition for years and polygamy shatter that norm...

Marriage and Divorce

...Latrina Longmire APA Theo 202 D07 Essay on Anthropology: Marriage and Divorce Marriage is a sacred vow between a man and a woman and the Bible gives us guidance. As Christians there are many verses within the Bible that teach on marriage for newlyweds, husbands, wives and engagement. The Bible says that marriage is for companionship and intimacy. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman,' for she was taken out of man.' For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. (Genesis 2:18 21-24 NIV). In a marriage, husbands are to love and sacrifice and wives are to submit. Even though in today’s society, women being submissive are not popular. The Bible teaches us that husbands and wives are equal partners. It also teaches that wives are godly in character and that husbands are kind and to honor their wives. It is good for a man not to marry. But since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. (1 Cor. 7:1-2, NIV) This verse teaches that it is better to marry than to be immoral. A couple is married in the eyes of God when it is consummated through sexual intercourse, has a formal ceremony and is legally married. Today it is acceptable to cohabitate and for the woman to be the provider. The Bible is very...

Book Review: Loving Your Husband

...Loving Your Husband In her recently published book Loving Your Husband, Patsy Loden discusses several ideas on how to transform your marriage and honor your covenant. This statement sounds much easier than it actually is. However, with effort and dedication from both spouses, this goal can become realistic in many marriages. Loden states from the beginning of her book that marriage does not come with a manual; therefore, not all these techniques will work for every marriage. Unfortunately, good marriages do not just happen. Loden tells her readers that marriage takes preparation. The Lord said in Titus 2:3-5 that the older woman ought to teach the younger women how to love their husbands and children. We must allow God’s principles to become our nature. It is not just something we can jump into and become a professional. Commitment is an extremely important part of the marriage covenant. A woman who is committed to her husband can result in a magnitude of different things. This creates trust and respect within the marriage. A problem that women have is that they are constantly trying to change their husbands into the spouses they want them to be. However, we must “teach our husbands without words – and he may change.” Sometimes it is not what we say, but it is what we do. Loden gives examples of strong Biblical women who were tremendous influences in the lives of people. None of these women changed the behavior of others, but influenced them by their good actions. Loden...

How a Marriage Is Affected When the Wife Makes More Money and/or Is More Educated Than the Husband Is?

...How a marriage is affected when the wife makes more money and/or is more educated than the husband is? Abstract Cases of women earning more than men have been on the rise. This paper concisely tries to find how income gaps, where wives earn more than their husbands, affects marriage. The paper heavily relies on other studies carried out by other researchers. It derives its arguments from journal posts and other sources. The conducted research found out that the state of women earning more than men has the following negative impacts on a marriage: 1) Women become independent because they have less to gain in a marriage. 2) Couples live an unhappy life, full of tension, stress and other psychological problems. 3) Gender roles reverses and women work more than they do if married to a man with high income than them. 4) Wives end to distort secretly their income in order to reduce and avert the risk of divorce. This results to dishonesty in the marriage. The paper also concludes by noting the various flaws and weaknesses found in the sources used to draw arguments for the question under study. The paper ends by noting that monetary gains do not necessarily lead to a happy marriage; true love does. In the traditional family setting, men played a very important role in the family. They were the sole breadwinners while women stayed at home, attending to matrimonial duties and nurturing their children. This is what constituted gender roles, and it was the sole pride of all...

Polygamy Is Not a Party

...Polygamy Is Not A Party The newest sensation to watch on television these days are two shows on TLC called “Sister Wives” and “My Five Wives.” These shows deal with the topic of polygamy and how it is supposed to benefit everyone, especially women. These families want to show the rest of the world that their way of life is healthy. In the United States, when looking for the prospect of finding a husband most women aren’t looking to share, so it’s expected that polygamy would be frowned on by most communities. However, there are still a small amount of families that chose to live as polygamists in the United States, illegal or not. Some are forced into plural marriages and some choose this life. Either way, the mental health of the wives is likely to be negatively affected as this lifestyle causes mental issues such as low self-esteem, anxiety and depression because it is an illegal, morally ambiguous, cult-like life that offers a false sense of security and jealousy. Polygamy is a federal crime and a state level crime in most states. The United States was built on Christian morals making marrying several women not only a crime but also a moral issue therefore causing a great amount of controversy amongst most citizens. In fact, up until November of 2013 in Utah where polygamy is most common, not only ways it illegal to have more than one marriage license, it was also illegal to live in a house where a man would co-inhabit as though he was married with more than one...

Polygamy

...we translate it, the meaning will be “often married”. The polygamy has an interesting meaning where the marriage is done with more than just two partners as it happens at most societies. In most countries out there the polygamy is not a practice that is tolerated and the laws are usually making it illegal. This word is usually referring to the type of marriages where there are two or more spouses, but in the vast majority it will refer to two wives or more. At the same time there are also tons of cultures from all over the world that have absolutely no problem with accepting polygamy as a normal thing and this means that there are no laws to prevent men to have more than one wife or even when a woman has more than one husband. The polygamy term can create a lot of confusion, especially since people confuse it with the bigamy term. The bigamy however will only refer to have two wives, while the polygamy refers to having two or even more and they all live in the same house. Other terms that refer to this domain are polygyny – There in this situation a man will have many wives at the same time. The term polyandry refers exactly to the same thing as the polygyny, except for the fact that the wives will have at the same time more husbands. Group Marriages – Are yet another interesting term where there is one single family unit, but with many husbands and wives all at the same...
