There was a story of a man who saved many lives in a mass shooting in

Tennessee. His name is James Shaw Jr. At the time he was with his 4 year old daughter

and was talking to a friend. They went to a waffle house instead of going to the local

Chick-fil-a since it was closed on Sundays. They heard a loud bang and jumped a little.

James’ friend said, “Probably just a couple of plates crashing on the

floor”. The crashes got louder and closer until one of the windows shattered and a man \

was bleeding by the front door of the building. The man was outside holding an AR-15.

James told his daughter, “stay put and don’t move.” She was crying, curled up in a ball.

James saw people bleeding on the floor and quickly took action. As …show more content…

He shot a couple bullets at him, but missed. The guy shot again and grazed James’ arm.

barrel of the gun and it was burning hot. He screamed in agony and the man yelled, “Let

go!” James didn’t let go, instead he took the gun and threw the gun over the counter in

the Waffle House. The man ran away from the Waffle House. James told him, “You

better run!” James was met by ambulances approaching him and the bodies on the floor.

“You have minor wounds and will be able to leave in a couple hours.” James was told

that he was a hero and the families of those who were victims wanted to thank him. He

got out of bed and went to the rooms of the victims. Five of the victims died in the

Personal Narrative: The Pulse Nightclub Mass Shooting

...The factor that has most influenced my hopes and dreams is the Pulse Nightclub Mass Shooting that took place in my own backyard. This tragic event has affected me because I got to see with my own eyes the amount of love and hate in the world. The way everyone gathered together, placed flowers on the memorials and created shirts and flags to honor those who were lost all made me realize that our community is strong. It helped me understand that when a traumatic misfortune arrives, we can count on our community for love and support throughout these daunting times. However, my hope and dream is to unify the United States the way my community of Orlando has united. I want to strengthen this country not only during a dreadful crisis but also through...

Argument Essay

...Joseph Peterson Ivy Tech Community College Argument Essay Guns or no guns? That seems to be a big question these days. A lot of the reason behind the discussion is mass shootings that occur so often now days. Other forms of violence with guns happen, but the most controversy over guns usually occurs after a mass shooting. The reason for that is that mass shootings tend to be more mindless and more innocent people are hurt or killed in mass shootings. The thought of what if I or one of my families was in one of these mass shootings always hit home afterwards, and so we think of ways to prevent them from happening again. I have a question though is guns really the issue or is it really another issue? I think that the anti-gun activists use every shooting as just another door to support their views against guns. I can see why they do since guns are used to the shootings, but taking away a normal citizens right to own a gun and defend themselves against crimes is not smart. These shootings are not done by normal citizens and could still occur even if they took away guns from the normal citizens who just want protection. Police are not always there when you need them and sometimes you need to protect yourself first as we can see from different crimes that take place today. What would stop a mass shooter from buying guns illegally? Do they not think that they could? Drugs are illegal but still sold and used everywhere every minute. One argument that anti-gun activists...

Argumentative Essay On Guns On Campus

...Have you heard of the Columbine Massacre or the Virginia Tech shooting? These two massacres are on the list of the worst school shootings of all time. Shootings such as these have made people question whether guns should be allowed on campus or not. “What the press called the “Virginia Tech Massacre” changed the narrative of, and participants in, the national guns-on-campus debate.” (Birnbaum) There are two sides to this never ending battle; the pro-gun people and the anti-gun people. These two sides portray as being the opposite of each other, with many protestors on each side. Allowing students and teachers with conceal and carry guns on campus would benefit the school and help eliminate mass shootings. Having patrons with a conceal and carry permit with guns on campus would reduce the mass scale of shootings. If there for example, 100 people on campus that have a gun at one time, the ability to act quickly will prevent active shooters from being able to target a multitude of victims. These patrons would be able to...

Lumiere Brothers Research Paper

...The Lumiere Brothers and Melies created films that are significant to film history. The three lead the way for many technical and narrative developments that progressed the motion picture industry. Melies, for example, showed what was possible in the realm of film by using special effects such as using multiple exposures, time-lapse, dissolves, and added colour to his films by hand-painting them. He was constantly pushing the limits of filmmaking and what is capable of doing in camera. This was shown in his work from ‘The one-man band’, ‘A trip to the moon’, and others. Social Movement Analysis

...Emotions are controlled by the way people should act, think, or even suppress feelings in different movements (Benford: 65). Social movements often engage in what is called, emotion work and feeling rules. Emotion work is how social movements should control their emotions. Feeling rules are ways to suppress or evoke certain feelings. Emotion work and feelings rules are important to social movements and collective action because according to Beford, “movement activists attempt to orchestra and manage affective orientations towards events or objects that deem consistent with the movements narratives” (Benford: 65). Working on the participant’s emotions in an organization is important because it creates collective action through the unity of the movements emotions. An, example of emotions in a movement is when solders go after and defend their country. There is this sense of pride and respect among the solders which creates a common goal in mind. In other words, emotion work and feeling rules in a social movement is needed because it keeps the participants in unity with the social movements goal. For an example, if the social movement about saving animals from being extinct, the emotions that the movements should be exemplified is preserving, caring, and anything along those lines. The movement does not need members with a hateful...

King Leopold's Ghost Summary

...This tone was more effective towards the beginning of the book before King Leopold II had become king. When speaking about Stanley and David Livingston, his attitude and tone was more distinct. This book is very well at explaining the events that went on in Leopold’s time therefore, it is more of an explanatory narrative. The argument of the book is more towards the acts of racism towards the Congolese people and that is what makes the book interesting because it helps the reader create a better understanding to how racism first began and with this book it really gives students and idea of what racism was before it because racism. Vidoe Game Violence

...these types of games were so inspiring on the younger generation, I’d really be concerned with my son jumping off rooftops because he likes to play superhero type games like Batman and Spiderman. Another article by Dotinga (2003) that I have come across did a study of videogame violence with some teenage boys and girls. During the research study on boys and girls the researchers found that out of the 22 kids who played video games the most each day, were the likeliest to have behavioral problems, exhibit hyperactivity and have trouble academically. According to Greg Toppo’s (2015) article, “How Violent Video Games Really Affect Kids”, the shooter of the Sandy Hook shooting had been religiously playing one particular game for eight to 10 hours, about 9 times in a three month span leading up to the shooting. That game was Dance Dance Revolution, a not so violent video game. Now investigators did find some typical teenage boys...

Locating Topics of Interest

...Locating Topics of Interest Harold Butts Northcentral University Educational Research Methodology EDU8002-8 Alexandru Spatariu, Ph.D. August 24, 2014 Locating Topics of Interest Currently, there is a lengthy list of interesting topics pertaining to the current status in special education. The list was narrowed down to three high profile topics that my school district is currently dealing with. The topics are student post high school transition, school bullying and school safety, and the increasing growth of students diagnosed with Autism and the lack of teachers qualified to educate those students. The expectation of students after graduating from high school is to enroll into a two or four year college, join the military, or secure a job. Unfortunately, those options are not available for special needs students leaving high school without a valid diploma. Research shows that the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities are far greater than those individuals without disabilities. (Lindstrom, Doreen, & Mish, 2011) A student with a disability is more likely to have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Within the IEP is a section titled transition. The Individuals responsible for creating the IEP is usually the special education teacher or IEP team member. The IEP team may consist of a special education teacher, parents, students, counselor, speech therapist, administrator, and a general education teacher. If the student is at least 14 years...

Media Bias

...Media Bias in Reporting Social and Racial Injustices Nakia Dale DeVry University Media Bias in Reporting Social and Racial Injustices June 26, 2015, gay marriage was legalized in all 50 states on the weekend of the annual Pride weekend. There were celebrations everywhere. Celebrities, politicians, and every representative of the LGBTQ community was interviewed. The media covered the opinions of those who supported gay marriage, those that didn’t care about same sex marriages, and those who felt the world was coming to an end because of same sex marriages. There were experts on the new law providing their thoughts and theories on the subject. Rainbows were posted everywhere on social media, cars, and in communities. Pictures of same sex couples getting married were flashed across television screens, newspapers, and websites. Celebrating the beauty of marriage equality was high on many people’s lists, but in the midst of these celebrations, if you had been carefully following the news you were aware of several news stories that immediately stopped getting air time and were no longer considered newsworthy. As a viewer, you may have felt unsatisfied in the coverage of the other stories because the media left you dangling with no ending to the stories we were following. This is all too common when relying on the media for news coverage. Many viewers such as myself rely on the media to inform and educate the country on news that matters. When the same sex marriage topic garnered...

Ge 117 Itt Tech Video Games and Health

...Video Games and Health ITT Technical Institute It’s easy to see the appeal of the video game. They allow us to do things that most people would never have the chance to experience, or something that’s flat out impossible. From the roar of a massive v-12 engine in a Ferrari, screaming down a straight at 230 miles per hour, to the rat-tat-tat of a heavy machine gun, complete with the imagined scent of cordite and powdery, obliterated dry wall, or even directing stalwart troops across a decimated sci-fi battlefield, there’s nothing quite like the visceral experience of a well-made video game. I’ve plummeted feet-first through Earth’s fiery atmosphere in a vessel no bigger than a phone booth with blue and purple iridescent plasma-bolts exploding inches from my head. I’ve experienced the elation of besting a massive, scaly, fire-breathing dragon in single combat that had just burned down an unfortunate village. The experiences that these games give us are just not available anywhere else, to such an interactive extent. However, therein may lay a problem. It is an undeniable fact that videos games can have an addictive quality to them, due to the escapism they provide. Wherever one looks, there seems to be someone engrossed in the latest action-adventure game, whether it be on a handheld device such as a smart phone, or on an enormous flat screen television that uses more electricity than Rhode Island. We have more leisure time in today’s society than in any other time in...
