...Differences in Competencies Between Nurses Prepared at the Associate-Degree Level Versus the Baccalaureate-Degree Level in Nursing Eric Bradford Grand Canyon University: NRS-430V Professional Dynamics June 16th, 2013 Educational Preparation: The Differences in Competencies Between Nurses Prepared at the Associate-Degree Level Versus the Baccalaureate-Degree Level in Nursing Throughout the United States there a two basic nursing programs one can complete to become a licensed nurse. There are associate degree programs (or an ADN program) and bachelors degree programs (or BSN programs) available to students willing to complete either program. There are multiple differences between the two programs and the objectives and competencies taught in each degree. A few differences between those competencies will be discussed in this paper along with a patient care situation involving the decision-making skills between a nurse prepared at the baccalaureate level and associate level. The first difference between the two degrees is the multiple studies on nursing education linked to patient outcomes. These studies all show that the hospitals with a higher percentage of nurses baccalaureate level of nursing resulted in a lower mortality rate for their patients. In the January 2007 Journal of Advanced Nursing they reported findings that indicated just a 10% increase in the proportion of nurses who held a bachelor’s degree resulted in 9 fewer deaths for every 1,000 discharged patients...

...should pursue an advance degree. I have finally put my fears to rest and have decided to embark on the journey of attaining my Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Health Care by February 2014. This decision took me four years due to several pros and cons I weighed, uncertainty of what degree to pursue and my current career. There are several advantages and disadvantages that I weighed during my journey to decide on pursuing an advance degree. With completing my undergraduate program not only did I get a degree in Business Administration I also incurred a hefty amount of debt, $40,000 worth. According to an online article in 2011 the average cost for graduate school was $10,000 per year at a state college (Jo, 2011). These individuals often have to pay off their loans for between 10 to 25 years, depending on the amount they owe. People do not have many options for getting out of debt when they cannot pay their student loans, as private and federal loans are not subject to bankruptcy (Latzko, 2011). Along with this adding on to the debt this can also be time consuming. Another hindrance is that I do not have any experience in the health care field. If I do attain a Master’s degree it does not guarantee a career in my field of choice. While certain careers definitely require an advanced degree -- doctors and lawyers, for example -- many other careers offer plenty of job opportunities for job-seekers with just an undergraduate degree. In fact, in some...

...Decision to Obtain an MBA MGT/521 October 12, 2012 Abstract According to CBS Money Watch (2007) as it pertains to an MBA Degree, “ When it comes to the practical value of the degree, the once-lonely voices of dissent have, in recent years, grown into a chorus of criticism. Among their accusations: The degree is over-hyped, MBA curricula are out of touch with real-world demands, and many programs have a culture that turns a blind eye to cheating. If the business world starts paying attention to these naysayers, that $100,000 tuition or the decision to pay big bucks to hire an MBA may start looking like less of a sound investment.” Decision to Obtain an MBA The decision for an individual to obtain his/her MBA can be both personal and professional. There are many negative connotations regarding the pursuit of an MBA. There are questions regarding whether or not it increases the pay range of an individual with an MBA vs. those individuals without an MBA. According to Brewer and Brewer (2012) “In a study involving MBA students, Simmering and Wilcox (1995) identified five factors that largely influence the decision to pursue the MBA graduate degree. These factors center around the personal prestige associated with the MBA, career exploration opportunities, goals for developing and improving interpersonal skills, entrepreneurial aspirations, and increasing career mobility.” The “[Graduate Management Admission Council] GMAC...

...company should look at as a means of giving our employees a way to advance their education and their positions in our company. This company was built by people and it is in those people that we should invest in, nurture and show that we are committed to their success not just here but in their life success. Often times companies look outside of their own ranks to hire people with advance degrees or more experience when there should be people here that get promoted so that growth my begin from the entry level as it should like the roots of a tree. Many of our employees are not satisfied in the positions they are in but this is not to say they are not satisfied with the company but they want more from themselves as individuals. Our profits show that we have employees that are committed to us, now it is time that we show that we are committed to them and their future. There are opportunities right now within our organization that our own employees would not qualify for without a degree, most of whom have the experience but are being held back because they do not have the one thing that would make them more hirable. As the company grows and new positions become available our employees would also like the opportunity to grow with the company as well, but in most cases with the rising costs of college it becomes almost impossible to better yourself. In todays job market our employees need all the help they can to compete with those coming from those external candidates seeking employment...

...those around us, whether it is employers or family, we can achieve our ultimate goal. Adults are often overwhelmed with late entry into the university system, coupled with anxiety, stress, and fear many may choose to become introverted (An Introvert in College: Survive and Thrive, 2009) and shy away from the task, those around them, or even life itself. It is time to accept the decision, hold your breath and dive in. Why an MBA The Technical College System of Georgia curriculum programs are standardized based on business and industry requirements across the state and are described as results driven education (TSCG Curriculum). As the technical system evolves and grows the systems educators must also grow with the organization. Faculty educators must meet the guidelines set forth by the Commissions of Colleges or COC. Faculty credentials must meet the guidelines of the Comprehensive Standard 3.7.1 of the Principles of Accreditation (Faculty Credentials Guidelines, 2006). ...Different Degree in Nursing Competencies: ADN vs. BSN Grand Canyon University: NRS-430V Professional Dynamic Nursing is a wonderful, rewarding profession to enter, and it must be chosen for all the right reasons. Today many nurses are faced with a difficult decision to return to college. For those of us who wish to continue to advance our nursing career; we continue to need the educational assistance that is necessary to advance our nursing skills. With nursing there are so many paths one can obtain after achieving your RN. You just need to choose what path is right for you. Basically there are two of the most common degrees to choose from the Associate’s Degree of Nursing (ADN) or Bachelors Degree of Nursing (BSN). Many do not realize the difference between the two. However there are many differences, but both nurses subscribe to the same nursing philosophies. With that being said, the ADN is about a two-year program while the BSN is a four year college or university. Another differences between ADN and BSN, is the ADN is 72 credits and the BSN is 125 credits. Today many nurses are faced with a tough and difficult decision. They are asking themselves what is the right choice for me? Why should I return to school? What are the benefits going to be for me after completing my degree? Truly, when it comes down to it only the nurse can decide and make the necessary decision. The associate degree level of nursing was developed out of a need to produce nurses in...

...with it. There are two conflicting arguments concerning educational return on investment; both sides over the presence or absence of a bachelor’s degree sides offer valid claims. It can be argued that a person’s success is not determined by merely obtaining a bachelor’s degree. A person will have to determine the definition of success as it relates to them. Some of the attributes that contribute to success are personal such as drive, determination, and creativity. There are many successful entrepreneurs who did not have a bachelor’s degree. Andrew Carnegie, famous industrialist and philanthropist, known for the Carnegie Institute of Technology and building 300 public libraries was a high school dropout. Coco Chanel, founder of the brand Chanel and Chanel No. 5 perfume does not have a college degree. Andrew Jackson became President of the United States at age 35 without a formal education. Dave Thomas, billionaire founder of Wendy’s dropped out of high school at age 15 (Toren, 2011). This proves that to attain recognition and be successful, we do not have to possess a bachelor’s degree. Also, there are risky disadvantages to pursuing a bachelor’s degree. First of all, it can be very expensive. The return on investment on a bachelor’s degree in this economy is questionable. Although a student will graduate with a degree, the expense is astronomical. Tuition is increasing more quickly than costs-of-living expenses and students may find themselves at the end of four...

...In this essay I will examine the benefits and drawbacks of studying for a university degree and will demonstrate which one outweighs the other. I will also start by defining what a university degree actually is. A degree can be defined as an academic diploma that is received from a college or university. It is an official certificate that a person gains after completing three to four years of study at an academic institution of higher education. The most common type of degree is called a ‘bachelors’ degree, which is also known as a first degree. Owning a degree qualifies a person for various professional fields. For some fields, for example the medical field, the occupations have titles for which a degree must first be obtained. To gain the title of ‘doctor’, a doctorate must be completed. This is an advanced graduate degree programme and is the highest form of degree. Other forms of degree include a master’s degree which is a course of study taken after a first degree is obtained. Many professions require at least a basic first degree. Fields such as medicine, science and law require an advanced degree and sometimes a doctoral degree. Some fields that require a basic degree or higher, include business and education. Possession of any type of degree can often be seen the degree holders name. For example John Smith BBA, this would stand for bachelor’s degree of business administration, or M.D. which would stand for doctor of medicine. Doctoral candidates require completion of...

Once football became an official national sport in the United States, people began to realize that an athletic trainer needed to be present at sporting events. Athletic trainers were needed to tend to athletes in case of injury. In 1950's the National Trainers Association was formed. It included trainers from Japan, Canada, and the United States. ...Personal Responsibility Gen/200 May 20, 2013 Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility defines how a person will succeed not only academically but also throughout one’s life. When a person encompasses personal responsibility, he or she executes obligations in every aspect of his or her existence. It is necessary for a person to exhibit personal responsibility if one desires to have a lucrative and successful life. College Success and Personal Responsibility For one to achieve college success a person must have determination, to do what is necessary in one’s college career. A student must strive for excellence and have dedication to achieve a college degree. An undergraduate cannot expect to reach graduation if assignments do not get turned in on time or attend classes. In many cases sacrifice is necessary, meaning that three day camping trip may necessitate postponement. This is, unfortunately, the nature of the beast. In addition, a student must take ownership of his or her actions, achievements, and failures. It is important to remember, the world does not owe anyone anything, everything a person achieves is something he or she earns and that does not always come at cheap price. Plan to Overcome The greatest thing a person can ever do is to have a plan to reach goals and overcome obstacles that will inevitably arise. The primary step in this process is to become, and stay organized. One can keep a calendar handy with important dates, like the date that thousand...
