J. Frank and Charles Duryea designed the first American automobile in 1893, and for a long time cars were considered a luxury for the upper class; then Ransom E. Old created the Oldsmobile, making cars available to the middle class. He sold them at $650- about $16,000 today- making them cheap and accessible. Car makers were faced with the dilemma of balancing the quality of the car and its price. They had to figure out a way to make a car with materials they could afford to sell for price that would create enough revenue to keep their business afloat. The car industry grew immensely, and by 1913 the United States produced 485,000 of 600,000 vehicles produced in the world. By 1920, cars were supremely important to the petroleum industry and …show more content…
At first cars were a luxury for the upper class, before they became popular among the middle class. Although the upper class [finish sentence fam], the middle class were the ones who made cars such a [important part of (pinnacle?? use that somewhere)] the Roaring Twenties. Through that popularization, cars became cheaper as well as more accessible. This created mobility on a larger scale than before, giving people more opportunities. Cars gave those living in the country access to jobs in the city. Previous to the popularization of cars, people either lived in the city and worked there or lived in the country and worked there. There weren’t in-betweens, until cars gave people a fast and easy way to transport themselves between home and work. With cars, there was a smaller gap between rural and urban life. This new [league,??] of commuters led to the building of highways, better roads, and an increase in jobs. People experienced traffic jams for the first time, and there were (of course) sharp increases in both accidents and fatalities due to automobiles. These increases meant putting in place licensure and safety measures. From the availability or location of spaces, congestion, and competition for land, parking became a problem very quickly. Individual motorists, merchants, property owners, commercial fleets, taxis, and mass transit all needed parking. The fact that before 1903, there were no traffic rules in America did not help that cause. The Bronx River Parkway first opened in 1906, and it was the first highway designed expressly for the use of cars. In 1914, Cleveland installed permanent traffic lights and in 1917, Detroit adds a yellow caution light. The increase [syn] in cars meant an increase in the building of roads. However, building roads damaged both animal and human habitats. Oil, grease, asphalt, rubber from tires, sand, and salt, all contribute to “nonpoint

Middle Class Research Paper

...Social hierarchy has existed from the start of time it seems, as in the medieval ages you always have the royals and the peasants. In the United States of America there is a system in place showing the social hierchy which consist Elites at the top, only making up one percent of the population, use the government to extort the rest of the population by using the law in their favor against the middle class, immigrants, and those suffering from poverty. This form of hierarchy is supported by Social Darwinism; the idea that the wealthy are the fit, and the poor are the weak so they are not to be helped. Is society’s way of taking out the weaklings, and further validates the corruption during this time period, disappearing middle class, and the...

Middle Class Parenting Research Paper

...Many middle-class parents in America have appropriated the sentiment from the first ad campaign for the Peace Corps; parenting is “the toughest job you’ll ever love.” The love comes from loving our children, but the tough part of parenting is harder to pinpoint. Parents today seem to be working harder than ever before toward the goal of preparing our children for happy, fulfilling adulthoods only to realize that our pursuit of their happiness is not working for them or us but is instead leading to greater overall unhappiness for both parents and children. This incongruity between parents’ goals for our children and the unhappy results no matter how hard parents try is likely indicative of a disconnect between the methods parents are using to...

Web. 15 Feb. 2014. In the article ‘World-Class Education’, it said that education need to be affordable for the community of African American. Some African American children are dropout which had damaged the community. Without education, the middle class people would not be able to sustain their family which can lead to society loss. Parents need to back their children education and to avoid them from dropping out of school. The source wants the middle-class to educate themselves so that they could have greater life for themselves and their family. It pressure parents and children to get educated. I would use this article for my research paper because it explain how lack of education lead to poverty and homelessness. It also discussed the importance of education in the African American community and how it can prevent poverty and homelessness. This source is credible because it demanded quality education for the middle class and African American. The author had written many articles about education in the middle-class communities. Many of these articles could be find in the education database at the Nova library. Doak J. Melissa. Ed. “Money, Income, and Poverty Status.’ Minorities: Race and Ethnicity in America. 2012. More specifically, it examines the debt level of the American middle class. Demographics of Texas Home-Schooled Students

...school students. Home-schooled consistently scored in the 82nd to 92nd percentile and the public school students scored in the 53rd – 71st percentile (Martin-Chang, Gould, & Meuse, 2011). However; are these studies comparing students from similar demographics such as economic status, region of residence, etc. or is there deep differences in demographics of the two populations which make the comparisons misleading? It has been studied and shown that a child’s socioeconomic status (SES) and overall demographics play a major factor in how well they score on academic achievement tests. The area that has not been looked at is what the overall demographics are of the average home-schooled child and if the ratio of lower SES to upper-middle class students are the same in comparison to the public school. This study attempts to find the answer to these questions. Keywords: Home-school; home-schooled; socioeconomic status (SES); performance achievement gap; home-schooling in Texas; and academic achievement of home-schooling. Bronwyn T. Williams Home And Away Summary

...In the paper “Home and Away: The Tensions Of Community, Literacy, And Identity.” Bronwyn T. Williams discusses how an individual's culture and community is a crucial part of their success with academic literature. Furthermore, the author argues that teachers are often unable to breach the gap between the academic literacy and connect with their students who share diverse ethnic backgrounds. To begin with, I believe that the argument that the author provides is effective because the author is able to persuade me using both ethos and logos. The articles intended audience is students and teachers. The main argument of the author is that a person’s background directly will impact how they will be able to process literacy in an academic setting and I also believe this to be true. The point of this article is to discuss how teachers are often unable to resolve the issues between home, community and literacy education....

Cognitive Psychology

...University Introduction This paper explores covert attention and the information processing in which we ignore other parts of the environment while concentrating on another thing. Covert attention allows our eyes to select things that we want to hear or see and nothing else without any eye movement at all. Past research shows that a person fixated on any object or thing directs all their attention to that point and blocks out anything else in their environment. Examples of this are shown in our everyday lives. For example, when we are at a crowded restaurant with a bunch of different conversations going on a person is concentrated only on their conversation at their table or talking on the phone to someone while driving is all examples of covert attention. This research study is going to test the past research that has been conducted on covert attention to prove it true or not. This study will also have a fixated point, thats an arrow pointing left or right, that the participants will focus on while trying to answer whether or not there is a blinking box to the left or right of the screen. Method Participants The sample used for this study on covert attention was my Kennesaw State University class of cognitive psychology taught by Dr. Tim Martin. This project was chosen to be done by Dr. Tim Martin and the class because we would have a substantial number of different demographics of individuals in the class to conduct a study of covert attention. The number...

Examples Of Income Inequality

...white household income in 2011, these percentage was equal to 55% and 63% in 1967 and 2007, respectively (Desilver, 2014). If discrimination because of skin color will be continued they will harm economy in some way because if these people will not have jobs they will increase the proportion of unemployed people in the country. The unemployment rate of black is two times greater than unemployment rate of white (Fields and Weller, 2011). In 2011, the black unemployment rate was equal to 16.1 percent, while it was just 7.9 percent for whites (Fields and Weller, 2011). Schnurer (2014) states that “Giving more people a shot at economic success produces greater gains for society because more people are contributing”. According to World Bank research findings the main reason for languishing economy in Arab countries is exclusion of women from economic contribution (Schnurer, 2014). The second example of unequal distribution of income in the US is inequality between income of college graduators and non-college graduators. American company the Rating agency Standard & Poor’s (S&P) describes greater educational levels as a main means to increase productivity, arguing that if workforce in America completed another one more year of school in coming next five years’ time period, productivity profits would be able to add more than $500 billion, which is equal to the 2.4% of GDP (Frizell, 2014). It can be seen from this data that higher educational level means higher payments for labour. The...
