...due to what they have viewed as their meaning and purpose in life is and all too realistic reality for me. Whether it being drugs, fame, money or fame it is sad that people of the World put these at such importance in their lives, and do not know the true meaning and purpose. Unfortunately, without a God to guide them to what is right and wrong, people all too often fall into what they believe to be right and wrong with no moral conscience, or authority. What is the true meaning of destiny to a secularist? What could possibly happen after life here on Earth since they do not believe in God or an eternal life? This question for a while has me stumped to think that one could believe that why you die that is it, that’s the end of the road. Secularist believe that there is no such thing as an eternal life in Heaven, so they try to leave the legacy here on Earth whether it may be personally in record books or materialistically for generations to come. In contrast to the secular humanist view of my God, I believe that everything here on this Earth has a meaning and purpose, that everything here on Earth was meant to be. Even us, down to the very strand of...

...A nuclear family consists of a couple and their offspring. The nuclear family ties to Kipnis argument in that this very small, intimate, basic social unit can be used to reproduce citizens who have accepted the capitalist work ethic and strive to continue its legacy. However, by only focusing on romantic love, Kipnis disregards other forms of love such as love within a family or the love within a friendship. The solution to initiating social change is to eliminate the idea of the nuclear family and embrace the various types of family structures, in order to deal with each household's specific needs. Kipnis’ biggest flaw is that she only focuses on the structure of a nuclear family. According to Kipnis, the married couple is the most common form of adultery(393). As couples and romantic love become the focal point of her essay, Kipnis shoves her argument into a small confined box that allows her to ignore other types of household structures. Either that, or Kipnis believes that every household consists...

...Managing Discontentment A generational legacy, passed from father to oldest son, historically has been successful in maintaining power within a family. However, few stop to think about the feelings of the people involved, and whether or not they desire this inherited this position. An excellent example of this, illustrated in The Chosen, by Chaim Potok, gives insight into the life of an heir who does not necessarily desire his inheritance. Danny Saunders is the son of a well-known and well-respected rabbi named Reb Saunders, who brought his people to New York from a faraway country and continues the tradition of his forefathers in leadership and religion. Since birth, Danny's designated position, to lead his father's people, has been set in stone. Although resigned to his fate, Danny still possesses a rebellious nature. Main traits observable in Danny are intelligence, determination, and discontentment....

...extraordinary book that avoids quick management theory and brings the reader back to the reality that human values form the basis for extraordinary leadership” (De Pree, n.pag.). This is clear throughout the book as De Pree advocates for a servant leadership, similar to Colleen Barrett from Southwest Airlines who also advocates for such humanistic leadership. De Pree points out later in the book that owners are “liable for hard assets and also a legacy for their corporate heirs” (De Pree, p. 95). This is a powerful statement that I will discuss in greater detail. De Pree’s major theme can best be summed up by dealing closely with the esteem needs of people and the philosophy of positive organizational behavior (McShane, p. 77). De Pree postulates that the most effective way of leading be “participative leadership,” which deals with meeting employee esteem needs for “belonging, for contributing, for meaningful work, for the opportunity to make a commitment, for the opportunity to grow and be at least reasonably in control of our own destinies (De Pree, p. 23). Certain key ideas tie to the fact that “Leadership is an art, something to be learned over time … [leadership is] more a weaving of relationships than an amassing of information…” (De Pree, p. 3). Additionally, De Pree points to leadership as being owed to the employees of an organization by leaders, and the book is wholly dedicated to the hope that each person will read it and take away the fact that leaders need to “participate...

...able to complete this test.” It is not long before Gilgamesh begins to feel the weight of his eyelids as he strains with every fiber of his considerably muscular being to stay awake; however, he is weary from his long journey and cannot best his mortality—Gilgamesh succumbs to a deep slumber. In what seemed like only a moment, Gilgamesh is awakened by the smell of bread baking over burning embers. Utnapishtim explains to Gilgamesh that he has been asleep almost seven days. Each day Utnapishtim’s wife has baked a loaf of bread for everyday that Gilgamesh has been asleep. Gilgamesh begins to protest, but upon seeing the rotting bread lying on the ground, he becomes distraught at the realization that will not escape his mortality—it is his destiny to die. Not wanting Gilgamesh to leave empty handed, Utnapishtim tells Gilgamesh about a flower that can restore a man’s youth. Gilgamesh is elated upon retrieval of the flower. He can now be restored to the vitality of his youth and, at least for a while longer, he can stave off death. However, this flower is a false hope, for as Gilgamesh is bathing in a cool well of water, a serpent emerges from the depths of the well and steals Gilgamesh’s flower of youth. Once again his attempts to...

...along the social ladder, that the American dream is a fallacy. There was evidence to prove this point and I came to agreement with it. What kind of environment you’re born into doesn’t make you, doesn’t shape, and doesn’t set your destiny. But it sure does have a big influence on you. There was a statistic given that only one in five men go on to surpass their fathers income. Well, that just goes to show how difficult it is to move up in the social ladder. Sometimes hard work isn’t good enough. No matter how hard we would like to believe it, it doesn’t make it true. Now other side to article is that the educational system and literacy in the country only add to the social gridlock. By having no room for movement in school system, there is no room for growth to lower classes and no way to move up. There are some facts given about Ivy League schools, their success and difficulty of acceptance. They have a startling rate of leaders, CEO’s, ect. that graduate from their institutions. The other side to them is that they are unbelievably hard to get into, unless you’re a legacy Being a relative of heir to a well to family that has an alma mater gives you a forty percent chance to be accepted. The authors objection to this is a just cause, but in my opinion an unreasonable one. The world has worked in this way since society has...

...The whole time Gatsby was trying to get away from his situation of being poor he never was able to become happy. This was because he followed the wrong path. He convinced himself that money would allow himself to be happy, when what would have made him happy was staying true to his morals and what he truly felt was right. Contrary to Gatsby, to Michael, being a true american means being the most powerful one. A “true American” has to demonstrate their powers to others to gain control over them. He wants to make sure that people listen to him and do what he says. If they do not he believes he has to punish them for disobeying. Just as his father had said to him in the beginning of the film, in the end of the film Michael said, ‘Fredo - you’re my older brother, and I love you. But, don’t ever take sides with anyone against the Family again. Ever.’ Michael has lost his sense of compassion and fairness for all. He has lost his want for others to work with him to figure out a problem, which has led to him becoming so controlling. Having all of the control means that he is able to make all of...

...eeper The book I am writing my report on is the Dragon Keeper by Carole Wilkinson. I picked this book because it looks interesting and it’s an adventure book. I love reading adventure books because it feels like I am a part of the adventure. Also the book takes place in China, I like reading books about my culture. This book takes place in a far Western mountain called Huangling Mountain on the edge of the Han Empire in ancient China. A young slave girl with no name lives in one of the Emperor’s palace, looking after the animals and her cruel master. Her parents sold her to Master Lan, an imperial dragon keeper, at a young age. Along the way, the nameless girl found a mouse that she kept for a pet to keep her company. She named the moose Hua. At first Master Lan would do all the work that he was assigned to do, but after a while he started to complain that he is getting older and made the nameless girl do all the work like cooking, feeding the animals including the dragons and etc. The slave was afraid to take care of Master Lan two dragons that lives in a pit, but she puts aside her fears and feeds the dragon every day. But one day the one of the dragons die. The girl felt guilty because the day she had eaten a bowl a fresh food it was meant for the dragons. She made sure to keep the other dragon alive. The girl was afraid when Master Lan decides to get rid of the dead dragon by pickling it. She knows that if you pickling the imperial dragon would mean death if the...

...Alexander the Great was a conqueror and King of Macedonia prior to the Hellenistic Period. He succeeded to the throne after Phillip II of Macedon’s death brought his reign to an end. However, the continuance of the promised legacy his father left behind did not satisfy this power crazed King for fame and glory. Alexander the Great’s resentment towards his father led him to continue conquering because he wanted to overshadow his father. Under his headship, his unification of Greek city-states led to one of the largest empires known today. Alexander was born in the summer of 356 B.C. to Phillip II King of Macedon and Olympias of Epirus. Born into a royal household with a great military leader as the head of it, Alexander spent most of his early childhood watching a distant father transform Macedonia. Alexander was always left behind for his father’s military conquests and expansion. “Whenever he heard of Philip's having taken some city or won some famous victory, he used to look unhappy at the news, and would say to his friends, "Boys, my father will forestall us in everything; he will leave no great exploits for you and me to achieve." Indeed, he cared nothing for pleasure or wealth, but only for honour and glory; and he imagined that the more territory he inherited from his father, the less would be left for him to conquer.” Alexander realized that his father’s absence meant that he was out conquering ("Plutrach Lives: The Life of Alexander" p. 304). This led to tension between...

...My daughter and I were pleasantly surprised with our visit to Bahay Tsinoy (House of the Filipino-Chinese) in Intramuros, Manila. It is a museum documenting the rich history of Filipino-Chinese here in the Philippines. As a Filipino married to a Chinese, I developed a greater appreciation of my husbands' roots. And my daughter beamed proudly as she saw one side of her great ancestry. The museum, a good stop for history-lovers even without Chinese lineage, is filled with well crafted, life sized exhibits documenting the history of the Tsinoys. The exhibits were so realistic and well presented, everyone in our group (it was the field trip of my daughter) were clearly impressed. The museum is very organized taking you through the early contacts in pre-history, to the Spanish period and to the current-day involvement of the Filipino-Chinese in the country they now call home. Here is a photo essay of our Bahay Tsinoy experience. A huge Galleon ship welcomes you as you enter the museum proper. The Galleon ship is the means of transportation used by the Early Chinese while conducting trade with the early Filipinos even prior to Spanish occupation. Bahay Tsinoy - Galleon Trade1 Sangley, the term used by the Spaniards for the Chinese, comes from the word siong lai, meaning "frequent visitor" in Hokien. They were separated by the Spaniards from the rest of the community and dwell in separate quarters called the Parian. Shown below are the main occupations of the...

...extensions into territory led the both sides to different views on Revolution Legacy which until now had bonded them together. The promise of enlargement of American establishment to the pacific was to be offered by the manifest destiny and with it would come the enlargement of freedom. At each point, the subject of slavery had to be tackled - be it in John Tyler's wish of annexing Texas on 1844 or in the Kansas Nebraska Act. The slavery made the mutual understanding and cooperation between them impossible. The situation started to degrade when none remedies for the slavery had been found, political parties became fragmented and were not willing to be a single national entity and the politician from either side came to a belief that the next party had overthrown the tradition of America's political system. Morrison provides a wonderful analysis of the occurrence leading up to the complete segmentation of politics and disaffiliation. His histiography provides light to various school of thought that gives knowledge about the causes of civil war. The book is researched properly and well documented. More than a hundred pages of bibliography and notes provides the readers and researchers with great insights. Even though he is a bit wordy, he tries to impress the readers with his scholarly presentation and offer a captivating cognitive view on the various causes of conflict that led to Civil War. In my opinion, he has clearly given the readers the materials he want to share in the...

...The fastest way to reach the common man’s American dream is to learn how to be selfless and work together with others to accomplish a task quickly and efficiently. If the entire community develops, it is easier to set the foundation for achieving the average man’s American dream. “It is difficult to draw a man out of his own circle to interest him in the destiny of the state, because he does not clearly understand what influence the destiny of the state can have upon his own lot”. The American dream is a general idea or thought of what living in America will bring you financially and spiritually. In Ralph Waldo Emerson’s, Self-Reliance, the general idea of the American dream stays the same, and this work of literature brings out the background for where the...
