In the novel Okay for Now,there were a numerous amount of conflicts with either a character and itself or two different characters. The conflict that stood out to me was a conflict between Doug and his dad. From the beginning of the story doug and his dad did not get along. For example, from the start of the book when Doug had lost his signed baseball cap by Joe Pepitone, he asked his dad kindly to bring him back one day so he could get a new hat signed. Doug's dad, who was drunk at the time punched Doug. Mr. sietwick is very violent to not only Doug, but other family members too. When Doug first got a job at the Spicers Deli his dad tried to annihilate him and tell him non encouraging things. There are consequences for both sides of the conflict.

These three characters are not the kindest people at first, but there new home, Marysville, might just change them. Doug Swieteck is one of the most dynamic characters in the story. He is an average fourteen year old kid who is forced to move away from his friends. The character has a rough time in his new home in Marysville, and he feels that he does not fit in and he often says, “I hate this town.”(58) Throughout the story Doug becomes happy with his life and he meets a girl he likes named Lil. Personal Narrative: Art Censorship

...Throughout my 8th grade writing career, I have changed a lot. I used to despise writing assignments, and I always procrastinate when I have to work at home. Now I find myself enjoying some of the writing tasks. I still think some papers are pointless, but I have started to enjoy prompts such as narrative writing. In fact, I have even started to write my own story for fun. As a writer, I’d say I use pretty good language. I can describe things well, I’m good at organization, but I can improve on all of these. I also need to work on concentrating so that I don’t have to work late. A writer always has room to grow. While one may be excellent in some parts of writing, they’re not the best at everything. For me, I’d say I’m good at descriptions,...

Jersey Shore Critical Analysis

...Jersey Shore Critical Analysis I chose to do Jersey Shore for my Critical Analysis, not because it is my favourite show, but there is a lot of stereotype, and scripted events that relate to the younger viewers. This includes the commercials, and some of the things these characters are involved in. This Critical Analysis will break down this Television series, and will discuss what the characters do to create the image they are trying to achieve when airing this show. Will also discuss the ethical implications this series can have on the public, and how we behave because of this. In terms of gender, this show makes a clear difference in the actions between the men and the women. The men are often in the gym, or getting their haircut together, whereas the women go to the salon together, go to the beach, and there is a clear difference between what they do together. There are now a lot of relationships in the house, and this makes the way each gender acts extremely different. The male is often more dominant in the relationship, and the women seem to be more fragile. This was shown when Jenni was mad at her boyfriend Roger for ignoring her calls, but as soon as she confronted him, he took control of the conversation and immediately put his dominance across. There are many times in the show where they show that the women do have some sort of control or equality in the house, when they often show Mike doing the cooking, and the men cleaning. This could be to show that the women do...

How Does Shakespeare Use Language in Act 3 Scene 1 to Develop Character Analysis?

...Coursework How Does Shakespeare Use Language in Act 3 Scene 1 to develop character analysis? This essay is based on how the characters of 'Romeo and Juliet’ change in Act 3 Scene 1. The characters I will be analysing are Romeo, Mercutio, Tybalt and Benvolio. In the following scene, Tybalt is provoked by Mercutio to begin a fight. Romeo tried to avoid this situation by hinting to Tybalt the reason Romeo refuses to fight him. This leads to the death of Mercutio and Tybalt. In previous scenes Shakespeare presents Romeo as a defensive character. ‘’I do protest, I never injure thee’. The word ‘protest’ shows us that Romeo has a point and wants to make it clear without Tybalt misunderstanding him! Romeo uses the word ‘never which instantly tells us that Romeo has never harmed Tybalt in any way. He says this calmly but it only makes Tybalt angrier as it only makes him want to prove that Romeo isn’t an innocent sweet guy. Throughout Act 3 Scene 1, Romeo seems to want to avoid the fight and stop it from occurring. ‘’Tybalt, the reason I have to love thee doth much excuse the appertaining rage’’. Romeo tries to make Tybalt understand that Romeo has to love him and Romeo doesn’t fight the ones he loves. The words ‘have to’ suggest to us that if Romeo wasn’t married to Juliet then he wouldn’t ‘have to’ love Tybalt. Therefore, there could have been a chance that Romeo didn’t have any doubt in fighting Tybalt. This reason excuses Romeo from the fight however it doesn’t excuse Mercutio...

...song can even make you feel a little empathy. As well as feeling bad for the girls in the song, you also start to understand where they are coming from, with wanting to just escape the situation that you’re in, because you feel like if you stay, it will only continue to get worse. Another poetic device that he uses is rhyme. Rhyming is often used in hip-hop and rap songs to make the lyrics flow together. The last word in every line rhymes with the word in the previous line, but only during the verses. The only parts that do not rhyme in “Runaway Love” are the hook and the outro. [I attached a copy of the lyrics so you would be able to refer to the song throughout reading this analysis.] Ludacris also uses imagery to make his song feel more powerful. Imagery helps the listener to relate with the characters in the song because they can see in their mind what is taking place. “Mama is on drugs getting high up in the kitchen” is an example of the imagery that is being used because the listener can picture the little girl sitting alone in her room, while her mom is doing drugs in their kitchen. This makes the listener sympathize for the little girl, Lisa, because she is only nine years old and her mother is too busy getting high to take care of her. Ludacris is able to make his listeners grasp how important it is to pay attention to signs of abuse so that adolescents do not have to feel like “hell is a place called home.” Ludacris makes his listeners feel like they are in the...

The New Girl

...Essay – One Friday Morning ”One Friday Morning” is written by Langston Hughes in 1950’s. When I was reading the story I couldn’t stop thinking about racism and difference between black people and white people and how the black people have to fight for them self all the time, back then but also now a days. The main character is Nancy Lee. She goes to school a white school, called George Washington High and she seems proud of being a Negro American. She also seems to be a calm and friendly girl, a girl that knows what she wants, and is following her dreams. I can see that because the last line in the text is “that is the land we must make” when I read that, I could see she is a real fighter and a girl who wants to change the country. The theme of the text is racism and difference between black people and white people, because the committee found out that Nancy Lee was black and then they changed their plans about her getting the “art scholarship of the year”. Analysis - composition: The text starts with in medias res, because we don’t get an introduction or a presentation. It is a chronological order, and the end is open. Because Nancy Lee could have done something and I think that it is obvious that she would, with the last words she is thinking. Story-teller: it is a 3.Person story-teller. I think the story-teller knows about Nancy Lee’s feelings, or maybe it is a person who knows her very well. And it is always this person’s point of view we see in the story...

Critical Analysis of Bettelheim with Focus on Hansel and Gretel

...What effects exactly do fairy tales have on children? In some stories, how come it is okay to get away with murder and still be the good guy? In “The Struggle For Meaning,” Bruno Bettelheim explains the psychoanalytical effect of fairy tales on children going through changes and struggles of growing up. Bettelheim provides analysis on how fairy tales like Hansel and Gretel offer children with support such as getting rid of separation anxiety and death anxiety, thematically prevalent in many stories. Separation anxiety is the natural unease a child feels when separated from a parental figure and death anxiety is the fear of death and detachment. While Bettelheim successfully describes how fairy tales provide a way for children to subconsciously battle their inner anxieties, more can be said about these developmental effects through the story of Hansel and Gretel. Bettelheim delves into the psychoanalytical aspect of fairy tales and their impact on the growth of children. He first introduces our innate desire to find meaning in life and the role fairy tales play in the lives of children as they attempt to understand this meaning and the world around them. Bettelheim suggests that “literature carries information best” (324), especially fairy tales which “stimulate imagination [and] help to develop intellect and clarify emotions” (325). Fairy tales enrich development subconsciously in children when they are most developmentally vulnerable and, as a result, assess real life situations...

The mediums to transmit ironic and satiric effects, however, can change with the course of time. The use of them in TV series evoked my interest to examine this phenomenon. Irony and Sarcasm are the stylistic features principally used in the comic TV series South Park. Although the concept and the humor of the show remains the same, the success now persists for more than a decade. For that reason, I decided to make use of excerpts of this series and to analyze the methods of how irony and satire are created. Despite the sentiment of many that South Park is nothing but a threat to young people because of its massive use of scatological language, a multitude of messages can be uncovered in this TV series. Therefore, not only the surface structure of the often-obscene content has to...

No one ever seemed to like the new kid, it was very hard to fit in, and the teasing seemed never to stop. To complicate insecurity matter even further was the diagnoses of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the need to take medicine. The teasing causing the insecurity could not stay in fear the teasing would never stop. I developed persona’s...

Single, Female and 25: Love Among the Ruins

...Analysis and interpretation of “A journey” ”A journey” is a short-story written by Colm Tóibín in 2006. I will focus on the protagonist, the character Mary, and her reliability by analysing the flashbacks. I will compare the personalities in the two texts “A journey” and “The Story of a Marriage”. The latter written by Andrew Sean Greer, 2008. I will also put the relationship between Mary and David into perspective by comparing “A journey” and the photo Interior with woman and child, Poul Mathey, 1890. The story is written from a 3rd person perspective, though the story is told from the protagonist point of view, as seen by the use of personal pronouns, such as “she” and “he”, but never “I” or “we”. As in “A journey” short-stories are often told from the protagonist point of view. In this case; Mary. She was amused by his earnestness (…). (line 6) The quote is an example that shows the reader that the story is told from Mary's point of view. In the case we are told that She was amused. Nobody would know that expect from herself and the omniscient narrator. Though the narrator is omniscient, it does not tell the reader anything about how, for example, David is thinking. He made it clear in the way he turned that he did not wish to speak to her. (line 69-70) In this case we are only told what she thinks he feels. You can say that it is a partly omniscient narrator. It is a very typical trait for short-stories, that the story is told from one angle only. The reason for...
