...Asmita Patel Organic Chem 211 Professor Stoneking Acai Berry Research Paper 06/07/13 Organic Acai Berries: Are They Really Just a Fruit? Acai berries have been around for many generations. They recently became popular a few years back because many people were using them as a weight loss supplements. There were many ads and commercials going around talking about how these berries are a great way to loose weight. Because of this particular media, I became interested in them. I was looking for something to help me loose weight that I had gained over the years, and a friend pointed out these new supplements that were trending for weight loss (McHugh). At first when I heard about them I didn’t think it was going to work, especially since supplements for weight loss don’t really work that well. While doing my general research I found out that not only was it used for weight loss but many other uses as well. The main use for it in the states was for weight loss and it was a hit or miss type of deal. Learning about the acai berry because of weight loss intrigued me and finding out it was an organic compound worked out perfectly for the organic chemistry research paper. The acai berry was first discovered in the Amazon Rainforest in South America by a tribe that lived in the rainforest. The people of the Amazon used the berry as a main food source in their diet because they soon realized how much of an impact the nutrients and antioxidants in the berry affected their health...

...Why the government should Subsidize Organic Farming Organic farming is a farming method focused on advancing environmental and ecosystem benefits, as opposed to the external output in farming. It promotes the health of the ecosystem, biodiversity, and the soil biological activity. Government subsidies farmer receive are aimed at promoting healthy and beneficial and responsible farming. To understand why it is crucial for the government to subsidize organic farming, it is good to evaluate the benefits that accrue from organic farming. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the gains achievable if the government was to subsidize organic farming. One of the focuses of most governments is the reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG). A UN framework for climate change is now a key focus for most governments. One way of achieving this is the subsidizing farmers to do organic farming. The aim of doing that is that, by the use of organic farming methods, the increase in greenhouse gases reduces. The essence of this is to reduce the number of energy intensive farming that have a negative impact on farming. In addition, using less energy intensive methods means more saving on the inputs and additional benefits to the farmers. This is important since, over the years, the gains and benefits for farming have reduced. That is because, of among other things, bad weather, and scares of public health. Therefore, promoting a method that will directly benefits the farmer and the environment should...

...factory farming more often than not incorporate abusive treatment to the animals. Factory Farming is an inhumane way of producing meat and dairy products due to its common practices of confined living conditions, wide usage of antibiotics and genetic engineering, and slaughterhouse practices. One of the most common forms of animal cruelty in factory farms is the overcrowded and confined living areas of the animals. Chickens are the most confined animal in Factory Farming with up to 120,000 birds on one farm. (Madhani, 2015). Both egg-laying hens and fryer chickens are housed in “battery cages”. Battery cages hold between five and ten hens with each hen allotted between 67 - 76 sq. inches (less than the size of a standard sheet of letter paper). Being confined to such a small area creates multiple physical and mental problems for the chickens. Among the more common noted problems is the inability to spread their wings, standing up, nesting, perching, and dust bathing. (“The Humane Society of the United States", n.d.”). Debi Zimmermann (Ph.D., Veterinarian) commented on chicken living conditions at the Canadian based egg supplying Burnbrae Farms, “With 7–10 hens squeezed into each small barren cage there...

...Financial Prospectus Content Paper Starting a new business involves time, money, expectation, planning, and decision. New venture needs to create a business plan outlining business ideas, concepts, goals, trends, strength, and weakness. There are 7 components of a financial prospectus to put a business into motion such as: - Business description - Market analysis - Market plan - Competitor Assessment - Operating Plan - Financial Plan - Executive summary The new business venture I planned to invest would be a Shrimp Farmer. The market demands of organic food have increased the global production of freshwater shrimp farming. Shrimp has become the most popular seafood in the United States. On the other hand, consumers are becoming more conscious and concerned about the environment damage. Many shrimp farmers often use antibiotics and hormones to increase the shrimp production. The methods used before to meet the shrimp’s demands have dramatically damage environment. Now, many advances in researcher found new methods and technology that have changed the scenario. Business Description Carrillo’s Shrimp Farm would be placed in the Desert of Imperial Valley to combine the effects of the hot sun with the qualities of deep pumping well water allowing a faster growth. The shrimp would be raise in a pond with significantly depth water having as a mission a fresh, healthy, and free hormone shrimp. Since the well water rich in mineral would be...

.... . Food is central to the idea of living. We have breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper every single day. It is so important that the quality of the food that we eat should support healthy living and help our body stay in shape. From the time a baby is born, it needs to feed on milk. It is generally agreed that the baby should be fed on the mother's milk. And that is the best source of all the nourishment that a growing body of a baby needs. With the right start in life a baby's body and brain can take well all the challenges of later life in a better fashion. And this analogy is true for all stages of life. Regardless of, how old or how young you are; food prepares you for the work that’s important in your life. Nowadays, especially in cities there are a lot of concerns about junk food and adulterated food. Infact, there have been news reports about unhealthy water supplied to cities in the local press. I think the quality of food is related with the overall environment in which we live and function. If we continue to use pesticides and fertilizers to get out crops then we...

...are being reintroduced into our water sources. The waste water treatment facilities are efficient in removing the organic waste from the water supply, but they are not active in removing chemicals, and nutrients from the water table. I would like to discuss a few things that everyone should know about our waste water treatment facilities and what we can do to protect ourselves from being poisoned by our tap water. First, I would like to go over a few of the intricacies of our wastewater facility in Chillicothe. Second, I am going to discuss the chemicals, nutrients, and hormones that are occurring in our supply water due to the lack of regulations and filtration of our wastewater facilities. Third, I am going to discuss a few ideas that may aid the problem. Let me begin by first describing the waste water treatment process in our Chillicothe area. The Easterly Chillicothe Waste Water Treatment Facility is the subject of my studies because it affects most of us here today. Waste water is drained into the sewer by everyone living in the eastern side of the city. The sewer is perhaps the most important part of our water system today. This facility is built to handle OWC’s or organic wastewater compounds; it is designed to separate the water from the OWC’s using aeration to feed oxygen to microorganisms; which in turn, break down the composition of the organic compounds. The first stage is the preliminary filtration system which removes rags and trash...

...this location. Main Cereal Company offers organic cereals, which consists of Australian grown whole grains, fruits and nuts. Main Cereal Company has developed a new breakfast cereal range called Bran Flakes. The range offers ‘Bran Flakes Original’ (only flakes), ‘Bran Flakes Mixed Fruits’ and ‘Bran Flakes and Nut’. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of the six forces that operate and within the macroenvironment, the six influences are: demographic, economic, natural, technological, cultural, and political (Kotler, Brown, Burton, Deans and Armstrong, 2010). All six forces play a significant role in marketing Main Cereal Company’s new range. Demographic As explained by Kotler, et al. (2010) demographic environment is “the study of human populations in terms of size, density, location, age, sex, race, occupation and other statistics” (p.137). Statistics indicate Australia has lower fertility rates and people are living for longer. This has increased Australia’s median age, evidently resulting in Australian have an ageing population (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2011). In the year 2007 Australian’s population for people over the age of 60 was sitting at 18%, however by the year 2050 they predict over a quarter of Australian’s population will be over the age of 60 (Kotler et al., 2010, pp.140). With this is mind, nearly one fifth of the population at the moment is mainly consisting of people known as the ‘Baby Boomers’ - people born in between the years...

Many different companies, consumers and governances have all joined the bandwagon and work to further the goals of an organic world. The organic movement is no where near complete and many dedicated individuals are working to further its progress.
