Nonetheless, in the case of Canada, the primary concern is in the number of criminals with grave mental disorders, such as various forms of psychoses, and schizophrenia. This paper seeks to assess the fate of the mentally in the Canadian criminal justice system, as well as offer recommendations for improvement where appropriate. The Canadian Mental Health Commission outlines that in most cases, those who are mentally ill do not engage in criminal behavior, and are in fact likely to fall victim to criminals instead. In addition, the general perception that the mentally ill are prone to committing violent crimes was disabused by a 2001 research which established that less than 4% of violent crimes are attributed to the mentally ill (Schizophrenia Society of Canada, 2005). This statistic did not however take into consideration the criminal with accompanying substance abuse disorders.
