...Rachel Seavey Assignment #4 Professor Suzanne Palmieri 4/25/2016 People Like Us Tammy's Story “Tammy's Story” is about Tammy, a poor middle-aged woman who lives in a trailer with her four teenage kids. She walks 10 miles everyday to work for cleaning the bathroom in a fast food shop. Her neighbor said she was “trash” while her son is ashamed of her. Tammy grew up in a poor family and had very poor EDUCATION. She is working in Burger King for cleaning up the bathrooms. From information on the Internet, the salary of a lower level worker in Burger King is about $7000-$12000 a year. As she is the only person earning money for her family, Tammy's family is lower class. I would like to discuss more about Tammy's family. For Tammy, she works as a bathroom cleaner in a fast food shop which is a cheap job. Also, she has a low reputation as her neighbor called her “trash” and her sons don't respect her. For her property, she earns too little and not enough for food every day. And, she is living in a trailer which is a POOR living environment, so she has low level in property too. Tammy doesn't have a car or a driving license, so she needs to walk 10 miles to work everyday. “Owning a car” is for normal middle-class-Americans, and some of her neighbors even said,“Hey trash! What are you doing?”. As Tammy is in lower class, this behavior affects her life drastically. She said she is unhappy as her neighbors TREATED her differently. Her son said he is not satisfied...

...Many people do not believe that diversity truly exists in America. David Brooks is a huge advocate for this statement and has written an essay called “People Like Us” that claims diversity is an illusion in America. In this five page essay David Brooks starts off by saying he has never seen a truly diverse neighborhood where people of different backgrounds and careers live in the same area. When I read this statement by Brooks, I think of a multi fruit flavored pie that is covered by a layer of crust making it hard to see if the pie is actually mixed all together or if each slice is a separate fruit flavor. In retrospect to a neighborhood each part of a diverse neighborhood contains only one ethnicity in a slice of it (the mexicans are with the mexicans, and the asians are bunched with the...

...David Brook’s article, “People Like Us” makes a valid point of self-segregation. When growing up around different environments and in different areas we sometimes are not exposed to diversity. Since a lot of people are not exposed to diversity we tend to not agree with what other cultures, races, or towns/cities do this is true because, this is what I witness every day growing up. We do not notice it, but we segregate every day. When we come out the wound we are set in a category either one is a girl or a boy and one is either Asian, African American, Caucasian, or even Mexican. Children self–segregate for example if a child sees another with a different skin color they may not want to play with them because they are different from them. Not only does children separate themselves but adults are the same way. We are taught to stick with our own kind....

...been ingrained in a person’s mental state through socialization. In his article “People Like Us,” David Brooks explores the idea of the human habit of gravitating to like-minded people through the concept of diversity. Brooks uses the examples of both racial diversity in neighborhoods and political diversity in the academic field (n. pag.). In the very first paragraph of the article Brooks describes his idea of a diverse neighborhood and at the end, he implores the American public to make an attempt at increasing the diversity of their institutions and communities (n. pag.). However, in doing so, he implies that it is possible to have a “truly diverse neighborhood” despite having said previously that he has “never seen nor heard of that neighborhood” (Brooks n. pag.). He has not seen that neighborhood because it does not exist and, as long...

...diversified and rich with culture. Sure that may be true, however in People Like Us, written by David Brooks, he discusses upon the common issue within our country, if or if not America is truly diverse. People tend to group themselves to others that are basically like themselves, and to people who they can be comfortable around. Brooks argues that the reason why we are diversified is because of human nature. Human nature is the barricade that prevents us from achieving the ideal goal we want. Brooks tried to convince his readers by pointing out and focusing on racial integration as the main factor of diversity. He is correct to a certain extent, however there are many factors such as sexuality, and economy class that plays a part of the diversion America has....

...Social Media Media gives people the opportunity to connect with other people around the world, do research, see what’s trending, and advertisement. Media changes our ways of how we see products, trends, and people and they can make us change our minds about how we think about these things. Also, depending on what you see people post on the media can change the way you see them or change your attitude towards that certain person. The media will always try sending us messages about things that might catch our attention and how we should see things. They seem to know what stuff we’re watching most of the time on the media. Companies will sends us advertisements on products we might like so we can buy them. We have a large world of networks like Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. That is only a few there are way more out there. In the article “Implications of User Choice: Myspace or Facebook?” by Danah Boyd she states that “As we become more enveloped in and by technology, it’s easy to feel excited about what’s going on. Yet we must also be cautious.” Which is true because as we become more hooked on technology. For example, when using networks we just want to be online to see what’s going on and don’t want to miss anything but we must be cautious at a point. Many people seemed to be on Myspace before knowing about Facebook. Everyone was on Myspace and Facebook was for networking adults and a few Ivy League college students. Then suddenly everyone almost everyone...

...This was a normal day for me and my little brother Jimmy, I like to call him Jim, and he likes to call me J. The day was boring as usual, today was the only day that felt like it was going to last for forever, all the other days felt the same, but never lasted this long. Something about this day just felt off. We leave our classroom, it was like a herd of animals out here, I get my things out of my locker and try to find my brother. Turns out he was in the front of all this chaos. From that point on the day was normal, practice was pretty fun this time, I sat through Jim's soccer practice. Except for when this car was slowly pulling up beside us as we were walking home. Me and J were walking and talking as this car rolls up beside us, I...

...Professor Michelle A. Abstract “We tend to like those who are similar to us in values and interests rather than those who are different. We prefer to not over benefit or under benefit in a relationship, but have a relationship characterized by equity. We also tend to like those who like us and only us” (Feenstra, 2013). In this paper I will describe the factors of attractions and what attracts us to one another. Also I will discuss why we are likely to befriend someone from another culture than someone from a similar background with a similar physical aesthetic. The human need to build bonds and relationships will also be discussed. If we have an innate need to belong, the attachment to our emotions, social bonds, and our fear of deprivation will be outlined. I will also explain the three types of love and describe the differences and similarities between them. Sternberg’s triangular theory of love will be discussed as well. Power of Love and Relationships In life we cross many people and our interaction and relationship differs every time. Feenstra states that first-year students were more likely to develop a friendship with someone they sat next to during an introductory session than those they were not sitting near (Feenstra, 2013). This is true as I have witnessed when I was a student on campus. I tended to gravitate towards those who were in my class. “The most important factor in our liking of those who are close to us is repeated exposure. Exposure does not need...

...life. H: I think religion is a stigma forced upon children when they are to young to understand the concept. M: can you just sum all of this up in one word? H: forceful; Q2. How does each one of you define religion and what constitutes of religion? E: I think religion is a set of belief that is followed by an individual that according to him probably leads to a Supreme Being or power. What constitutes it, ummm… lets say: faith, belief. It serves as a moral compass for human beings. It is a sort of guideline. For me there are two extremes: heaven and hell. Hell indicates the bad and heaven is for the good. The preacher who actually came up with this idea wanted us to maintain the delicate balance and stay in the center. So yeah, it is a guideline for me. G: it is probably a way of life. Our faith tells us how to live our life, keeping in mind the afterlife M: And what constitutes it? G: my religion has five basic pillars: shahada (faith) which is the declaration stating that there is only one god, the Allah, the creator of all beings; salat (prayer); charity; fasting and pilgrimage. G: i think it is a way to live our life E: yeah, but that’s kind of subjective as, I mean we don’t actually worship any type of god. Look at Hinduism, they have many gods, all different but they worship all of them. So, god in fact has many forms and shapes. It can be anything whether it’s a being, air or other inanimate object. B: exactly, I fell that religion is set a belief...

...Veterans are really important to this nation for many specific reasons. They are so called "veterans" because they have fought in war and managed to survive. I don't know any veterans in person, but I do know of a few that are really famous. A lot of the veterans are voluntarily in there to provide for us, some are forced like before. I am grateful that we have people like them, without them I really don't know where we would be. When they go to war, veterans have a lot at risk, they risk losing their family to a brutal death. One reason veterans are important to the nation is the fact they simply fight for us. They risk everything they have at home to protect for people that they don't even know. That is being brave, we need more people like them. Now a days people aren't willing to do things that like, they're afraid of losing what they have. But certain kids now are headed in the wrong direction, and need to join military to get heir life straighten out in some kind of way. I'd suggest more of us become soldiers and troops, not only do they right for us, serve a good cause, but the army also serves us for the good. A lot of people join for help, a sort of rehab, and it works!...

...task done, in a place like Karachi, when you have to deal with the government, turns out not to be an ordinary experience at all. One example of that is what happened when I got my driver’s license. Firstly, I would discuss the honest and decent way in which my friend and I tried to get our license. We went to the license department on a Thursday afternoon. When we reached there, many agents tried to approach us told that they could get our licenses for us, as they had contacts with officers inside the department, who would get our licenses within no time. They also mentioned that it was almost impossible for us to get the licenses without hiring anyone for us, because the people inside the department are corrupt people and will never pass us in the theoretical exam and as well as the practical one. Since, we were there to follow the right way and had no of breaking the law; we decided to get hold of the licenses in a fair way. When we tried to get our driver’s license honestly, here were the steps we had to follow, in which we encountered different situations. Firstly, we entered the license department and went straight to the counter where we took our license forms in one building. After filling out forms, we had to go to the other building where we had to submit them. In that building, a huge crowd was present and a race for the submission of forms was happening. Those who had arranged an agent or local officer were preferred over people like us, who were on their...

...be a bad things for us for multiple reasons. One being that we let it take over on how we live. My claim on this subject is that we should learn how to control the problem This habit of constantly texting can cause us to lose focus on the important things like actually communicating. You have to think about the last time you had an actual conversation with friends, family, and others instead of texting them. My first piece of evidence would be that researchers say that ⅔ of the communication is wordless. I get that we can’t talk to people face to face at the moment if they are someplace else but, if there is a person or one of your friends next to you and you are on your phone you should put it down and socialize with others...

...February 22, 2011 Mrs. Guerard 4th period We Are Born With Evil In the everyday life we always witness some sort of cruel act inflicted by a human on to another. Cruel actions range from people verbally to physically hurting others. We ask ourselves why people commit these acts. We tell ourselves that those are just the evil kind of people but like William Golding said “We are born with evil in us, and cruelty is a part of this.” This statement is true, we are all born with evil in us and we can all be cruel. It’s in our nature, something we cannot rid ourselves of. Although evil is in our nature, we can do our best and avoid it. First reason why I agree with Golding’s statement is because he shows how everyone has evil in them through a realistic case scenario. In Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies, the kids were young, their ages ranged from 5 years old to around 12 years old. These kids started as innocent boys but later transformed into little savages. You wouldn’t think 5 year old boys would have the guts to hunt for their own food or even know how to hunt but these kids did. These kids prove that we are born with evil in us because they weren’t thought how to hunt but they knew how because it’s in their nature. We don’t do it because it is uncivil and inhumane like. People might use the character, Simon to argue that not everyone is evil because in the book Simon never really did anything cruel. Although Simon never showed a sign of him becoming savage, he did have...

...want, but to what cost? People don’t have the right to tell them what is okay to say and what is not. Where are the boundaries for what we say? This is where social media and laws don’t help us today. Wounds and wars are beginning because of something someone said. Does social media help us? Today, most everyone uses social media. It helps us get the information we need, but does it help us? People can be rude. Events can be escalated into a big misunderstanding. The stories can be changed to what people want them to be. Someone's words can be twisted and turned around to make them a big ordeal. It can make a small two car accident into a semi-driver ran into six other cars. People also instagram, tweet, and post rude comments that will make someone mad, upset, and heartbroken to see those comments a friend or a complete stranger said about them. Today people say what they want and they don’t care if it hurts somebody’s feelings, but who gets to decide whether it is rude or harmful....
