...helpful to study the context of prior history because by doing this we can understand who we are, and where we stand to other cultures, countries and people. By studying the history of others beliefs and opinions we can learn more about their views and standpoints and experiences. We study the history of others and ourselves to help us in learning more about their countries and their lives and what they have been through. If we do not study others background and history, then how would we know anything about what others have been through and help us understand why they view our country and us like they do. If there was no history from any country then how would we know where we came from and what it took to build our country, just like what it took or takes to build their country? What they may have suffered through, what they are still going through, what their beliefs on religion and life are. By studying other countries history we can learn why they had wars, what caused these wars and who was involved in them and who helped settle them. Without history we would not know any of this, history is just that history. There are many great leaders in these countries and we would not even know that without history. History is very important, “It has been said that he who controls the past controls the future. Our view of history shapes the way we view the present, and therefore it dictates what answers we offer for existing problems. History is a story about the past that is...

...World” History throughout the world has given us the ability to the look into the future. The study of history may not be the most exhilarating, exciting, or entertaining. However, it is by far the most important. Many say “history repeats itself.” Others say “history is a precursor to the future.” However you want to word it, it doesn’t matter, all that matters is that through the study of history we can see mistakes people around the world have made in the past and learn from them so when the time arises for us to step up we will have the knowledge to know what to do. Also history can teach us how to except one another. When we learn about others cultures pasts we can see why they are the way they are and why they believe the way they believe. Lacking the study of “Ancient World History” one can easily assume that Muslims, Jews, and Christians a totally different people with different Gods; Allah, Jehovah, and God, respectively. In reality, through the study of “Ancient World History” this same person’s eyes can be opened, and thoughts broadened when they find out that Muslims, Jews, and Christians, worship the same God with different names; Allah, meaning total submission to God, and Jehovah meaning the exact same thing as God. Now with this new information this person has received, he can appreciate both religions for what they are and not come to an immediate assumption. “Ancient World History” specifically, is a type of history where we as Americans...

...alternate history of what would’ve happened on the day October 14 1942 if Charles Lindbergh had won the presidency instead of Roosevelt in 1940. In this part of the book Philip Roth shows the beginnings of the ultimate result of the Lindbergh presidency. Charles Lindberg was an overt anti-Semite and a nativist (both in the book and in reality) and from the time he came to power he had started working closely with the third Reich, and the government had started a campaign to inspire anti-Semitic and pro Hitler inclinations in the general American public. In this part of the story we see that history had spiraled out to become...

...We don’t learn from History, we repeat it? By dhara on November 17, 2010 in Articles I think its agreeable that if we don’t learn from history we would repeat it again. For example: If a person like Hitler borns back then now we will not ignore his acts may be we will take persistent actions to get rid off from him and his actions. History is proof that has examples of people repeating the mistakes of the past. Many of those mistakes are being repeated in the world today. This “law” is true whether it be on an international level, or a personal one. This is one of the things which is annoyable when said “We must let the kids learn from their own mistakes”. Bull. If you love your children, you will hope to teach them to avoid that which is harmful to them by trying to let them learn from YOUR mistakes. Learning by one’s own mistake can often be too late, and you can be too dead to learn anything from it. Insanity is repeating the same mistakes of the past and expecting a different outcome. But—— What if Orville and Wilbur Wright had paid attention to the history of attempts at flight? Would you be using the Internet if Gordon Moore had spent more time building a computer “the historically correct way” rather than designing the ridiculously tiny processor he developed? How many of you would prefer the good old days of medicine to what we have now? With all of the History majors the colleges crank out you would think that there wouldn’t be any more war, crime, or poverty...

...and qualities. Humanities study brings us in contact with the human culture, history, philosophy, experiences and activities. It also includes the study of human expression through music, arts and design, music, dance, theater and literature. It is a multi-faceted subject, but academically, we refer to the humanities as the study of the arts. The study of the arts is the study of mankind, thus, is the essence of humanities. Studying humanities helps us to get a better understanding of our own existence. The humanities are the stories, ideas, visions and expressions of people from all walks of life. It gives us more knowledge about the different cultures of people from the different parts of the world. It helps us understand our own heritage and our history. It brings us back to the past and transports our visions and imaginations and helps us to look forward to the future. The study of Humanities teaches us how to be creative and gain new insights about the world that we live in. Last summer, my family and I went on a trip to Washington, D.C. for the first time. The city is known to harbor the world’s largest museum, The Smithsonian Institute. The institute consists of 19 museums, majority of which is found in Washington, D.C. During our five day trip, we were very lucky to be able to visit some of these museums which I personally consider as the epitome of humanities. The exhibitions featured different categories such as the arts, history, culture, science and technology, government...

...Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States, there is a much greater understanding of what Columbus actually did. History needs to be through different viewpoints or the true history of life isn’t told; learners can’t perish to one view on history. Nations and communities have different viewpoints for example. Nations view history as Columbus viewed it while communities view history as the oppressed viewed it. While the views are associated with two different history writing styles in the chapter that Zinn provides, different views are essential when it comes to learning history. National collective memory is associated massively to the leader’s perspective, for example Columbus’s viewpoint; communal collective memory is linked heavily to the oppressed perspective such as the experiences of the Arawaks. The first chapter titled Columbus, The Indians, and Human Progress Zinn analyzed the untold history of what Columbus actually did back in 1492. Zinn provides us two different types of history writing. One type is the history of Columbus in Columbus’s own point of view. This is the type that students briefly learned about in high school modern history courses and of historians. Some historians basically sympathize with Columbus’s perspective. He was a hero for finding new land and supposedly bringing gold back to the King and Queen. Many students didn’t know there were other viewpoints so they believed in that one view. Zinn states, “When we read the history books given to children...

Once past that line, it calls up the history of they US in China, and how that was only beneficial to the US. ...History is a chronological record of events from past to present. Most of society would agree that history is based on records of events; however there are those who believe history was written by victors. As individuals we all have our own meaning or interpretation of how history was written or recorded. As society may agree that history is written by the victors, we should keep an open mind to how history was written, as the accounts of events back that far are hard to verify as those who live that era are now deceased. Researchers spend a life time to find the answers to the unsolved questions and the search for the truth to historical events. Finding facts on history would include as only a fraction of it has actually been documented, it’s also important to consider the reliable source in which the information was obtained. We leave the facts up to archaeology and historians to write what may or may not have happened. Can we trust the experts to give the actual facts to something that may or may not have happen so long ago? With history based on the victors it really does not portray both sides equally. It’s important to portray both sides of a pivotal confrontation to understand the actual facts of what happened. The losing side of history is just as equal to our understanding of history as the victors’ sides. Knowing all the aspects of both sides helps us learn from mistakes whether it was a win or lose battle. With any situation the more information you retrieve...

...Schools should offer more world history classes because the lack of knowledge leaves people at a disadvantage, it’s important to know how other countries shaped theirs, and students will regain interest if they’re taught something new. By the time students reach high school, they’ll have spent the past nine years learning about only American history and chances are that they know next to nothing about the rest of the world. It may not seem like it, but learning just a little information about other countries can drastically open a person’s eyes. “Our view of history shapes the way we view the present, and therefore it dictates what answers we offer for existing problems. Let me offer a few examples to indicate how this might be true.” (Crabtree) Who was Benjamin Disraeli? Charlemagne? Li Si? Unless students have already learned about these people from somewhere else, they most likely have never even heard their names before because schools don’t teach about them, despite their importance in history. Disraeli was a well-known English prime minister, Charlemagne was a French king and one of the first people to build schools so that others could earn an education, and Li Si was a Chinese advisor who organized many laws that we still use to this day. Ironically, Li Si...

...American History: Our Hope for the Future: Draft Four Our past defines our present and our present shapes our future. When I think of my country, I not only picture a land presently full of freedom and immense beauty but I also remember the often difficult history which brought us here. This history has set the stage for our lives. As I studied history this past year, I realized that it is not just a bunch of dates, places, and the names of dead people. It is the record of people who lived those times and events, shaping their futures to give us our present. Our children’s present begins with the future that you and I are building. The history I studied changed me and it can change you. It can reshape the world. Because of history, I now...

...fighting during the Tet Offensive 1968 Entries by: Ashley M. Johnson Journal Entre “Our March to Montgomery” Journal Entre- March 6, 1965: Tomorrow is the day we start our march to the State Capitol in Montgomery. Everyone has been directed to a group with an appointed group leader, to help guide us on our 54 mile journey. (According to History.com Staff (2010) I have to admit I am a little scared and excited all at the same time, many white people don’t want us to have the rights to vote and I wonder if we can make this journey safely. Journal Entre- March 7, 1965: This day started with much determination, excitement, fear, and courage. I found it a little settling to see that there were not just blacks lining up to march, but whites too. I then thought at that moment that we could actual accomplish the long journey we had ahead of us, as one. Over the next few hours when we approached the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, I saw the mist of my true fears come out. (Hagler-Geard (2015) White officials attempted to stop our march, most of us started to pray, although our attempts failed, we seem to have angered them more. Shots were fired, at first I thought they were shooting us, but after the clouds of heavy smoke filled my sight and lungs, I became disoriented and confused. (The Harris-Perry (2015) website) I was seeing brutal acts of violence all around me, innocent men, women, and children were being beaten and abused. (The Harris-Perry (2015) website) My father ran up to...

...Mark Lorenz A. Ruiz PS22 Teaching it correctly: History is not about dates By Efren L. QuirayPhilippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 06:12:00 11/08/2010 Filed Under: history, Education HISTORY IS not really about the past. It is about the present. The past is not about us and it is better buried behind. Rather, history may be the only option we have toward understanding the present. Young people today cannot relate their present-day predicaments with events of long ago. After all, there were no Facebook and YouTube then and man had not gone nuclear yet. What the youth really want are guides on how they can resolve their differences and find solutions to their problems. Most students find history boring and stale. Without proper orientation, they cannot find anything in history useful to make their life more meaningful. We should blame history teachers and school administrators for this. Teachers who require their students to memorize dates and places do not know how to teach history or how it should be taught at all. Worst, they ask students to supply dates during examinations. It starts early on when they were students who opted to become teachers for all the wrong reasons. Because they do not really like what they do, history mentors are as bored as their students when talking about things that happened long ago. I teach history by telling interesting stories to my students. By sparking their interest, I hope to provoke their imagination by finding relevant parallels...

...less to be thought as local history in Singaporean school due to its short past. Knowing about the past of one’s own country is a really important part of nation-building for any country. Singapore is no exception. It can work at the very beginning that Singaporean without knowing the past can develope their country fast and good. But for a country to have continues vitality and vigilance. “Knowing this history(how Singapore succeeded against the odds to become a nation) is part of becoming a Singaporean. It is the backdrop which maks sense of our present, it shows what external dangers to watch out for, and where our domestic fault lines lie...our young must understand Singapore’s unique challenge, constraints and vulnerabilities.”[1] As the prime minister Lee Hsien Loong said, not knowing Singapore’s history make people apathy and lack of willingness to meet challenges, especially for the young generation that had never go though the hard time. “I thought our people should understand how vulnerable Singapore was and is, the dangers that beset us, and how we nearly did not make it.”[2] Lee Kuan Yew, regard as father of Singapore, also state the importance of knowing the past to the future of national building of Singapore. Learning the history of our country make us know the vulnerability and challenges. Also, as for Singapore’s special case, a nation with various religions and races, having some knowledge about the common history can rally people from all races together,...

...conclusion of the Year of Faith opened by Pope Benedict XVI, to whom our thoughts now turn with affection and gratitude for this gift which he has given us. By this providential initiative, he gave us an opportunity to rediscover the beauty of the journey of faith begun on the day of our Baptism, which made us children of God and brothers and sisters in the Church. A journey which has as its ultimate end our full encounter with God, and throughout which the Holy Spirit purifies us, lifts us up and sanctifies us, so that we may enter into the happiness for which our hearts long. I offer a cordial and fraternal greeting to the Patriarchs and Major Archbishops of the Eastern Catholic Churches present. The exchange of peace which I will share with them is above all a sign of the appreciation of the Bishop of Rome for these communities which have confessed the name of Christ with exemplary faithfulness, often at a high price. With this gesture, through them, I would like to reach all those Christians living in the Holy Land, in Syria and in the entire East, and obtain for them the gift of peace and concord. The Scripture readings proclaimed to us have as their common theme the centrality of Christ. Christ is at the centre, Christ is the centre. Christ is the centre of creation, Christ is the centre of his people and Christ is the centre of history. 1. The apostle Paul, in the second reading, taken from the letter to the...
