...How academic experience prepares you for college and reaching career goals The key to a child striving to obtain a degree is for his or her parents to really teach the importance of having one. Getting a degree is probably the only thing that I look at totally different as the years has passed. My parents were real old school and they didn’t come from a family of scholars so I was not really pushed in that direction. They made sure I did well in grade school but all I really was told was to get a job. All children should be explained how better life will be for them and their children if they get that degree. I realize it now but I’m not in the situation I would be in if I started fresh out of high school. More opportunities would’ve been available because I would be more mobile. I have children now but back then I didn’t have any. I could have easily moved to another state if I needed to do that for my career. The long term results and values of completing a degree is a sense of accomplishment. Some people do it to make their family proud. Some may do it so that they can personal see their achievements. Whatever pushes and drives you to reach for the stars is positive motivation. When you get a degree you stand a better chance at getting hired for jobs. Once you get hired it doesn’t stop there. With that degree you will get looked at for promotions versus someone who doesn’t have one. The biggest difference that a degree makes once you start working in your career of choice...

...Portfolio Essay Most people go to college to cultivate and discover their passion in life and build their knowledge. Student will experience two ideas during college one is Utility U, which gets things done mentally without learning the subject. The other vision is Utopia U that builds the morals and ethics of the students. However, Kwame Anthony Appiah the author of “What is the point of College,” tells that Utility U and Utopia U, “leads to very different metrics of success” but his students have a different observation than what Appiah states so which one is better for the universities to use and for the students’ to become successful in the future. The students’ Appiah refers to in his article, “What is the Point of College?” state that “They learned that what you can do and who you can be-- the qualities of your skills and of your soul--are two separate questions...

...Responsibility for College Success To succeed in college it’s important that students possess an attitude of personal responsibility. Unlike high school, in college no one tells a student when to go to class, when assignments are due or when to study for test. In college, students are expected to know these things on their own. Although personal responsibility might cause one to neglect teamwork, personal responsibility is needed to succeed in school because it allows a student to take charge over their own life and cultivates growth in all areas of their life Before one can accept such an attitude they must first understand what personal responsibility means. Personal responsibility means taking individual accountability for one’s own actions. In other words, it’s being able to take care of one’s own wellbeing without expecting or blaming others to do it for you. In school, it means turning in your work on time, studying for you tests and working effectively with your classmates. It also means you can’t blame your parents, kids, and work for not being able to do well in school. Some might argue that too much reliance on the self can cause you to neglect team work and important relationships. Some may want to help you in reaching your objectives especially group projects. When you have an attitude of I can do it by myself you leave out benefits of working with others who has different skills, knowledge, and ideas. You could avoid this by realizing your limitations and reaching out for...

...Jennifer Castillo EN110 January 5th, 2016 Why College Education is Important to Me I sometimes feel as though I am resting on the side of a mountain, breathing the crisp air, finally able to experience peace and blissful contentment. Reaching this point was necessarily difficult; full of setbacks, disappointments, reevaluations, fickleness, and uncertainty. I’ve never been one to excel at a trade, and my confidence is not at the level necessary to begin an alternative venture. So…college is a no-brainer, especially given the fact that I’ve wanted to help others in the area of mental health since I was a freshman in high school. Having lived through the darkest of days has further fueled my passion. A college education is important to me because it lays the groundwork in my mission. Completion is the ultimate victory…and who wouldn’t want that? I experienced symptoms depression and social anxiety for as long as I could remember. I was never really social or outgoing, preferring to spend my afternoons in my room writing stories or sketching random creations. As I grew, I soon realized I wasn’t just “shy” or “quiet” ...my reaction to interaction was pretty irrational. “Socially anxious children tend to become isolated as they are unable to develop a normal network of friends. Often a socially anxious child will have one or two close friends and rely on them for all social interactions. But families relocate, kids change schools, and interests diverge, and it may become...

...College education: large university or small college? Having a college degree today is an asset when applying for a decent job. Higher education is very expensive; it is a hard decision for parents and students when it comes to chose whether they will attend a large university or a small college. A large university and a small college have the same goals which are to educate, train, and develop students in their different fields, but they are also different in terms of class size, quality of teachers and tuition cost. It is important to have a good look at these different factors in order to chose between a large university and a small college when deciding what is the best for a student. According to a recent study, the average number of students per class in some large universities is around 400 to 500 students per class. Students always argue that the atmosphere inside the classroom is very good. They have the opportunity to exchange ideas with a large number of others students who are taking the same course. The inconvenient part is that students most of the time do not really interact with their teacher. Also students do not have to attend class or to participate and the teacher would not even notice. The number of students in small college is around 15 to 40 students per class. Most of the time, students know each other. They build a personal relation with their teacher. The disadvantage of small class is that, there is less competition compare to a big classroom. Some...

...I find it redundant to look at the past while I am reaching for the future. So instead of talking about my parents’ divorce, moving back and forth between families, or how my mother was unemployed for 3 years while supporting me and going back to college. I would rather focus on the challenges I expect ahead. I am currently a senior at Byron P. Steele high school. That being said I constantly of think of the responsibilities and preparation that lay ahead. I don’t have everything figured out yet, but I won’t let that stop me. College is my priority college which means, I will face many obstacles and I will fail at times, but I will always find a way to get back on my feet and move forward. The truth is I may not have the highest scores or the most scholarships, but I am a well-rounded hard working student, and I will embark the journey of college with a humble hart, and strong mind. Some people think you just go to college just to graduate with a piece of paper that “qualifies” them for a career of their choice but the true meaning of college is more than that. I want to attend college to experience education at the highest level and learn from others that share the same interest and goals. College is truly a life changing experience, because it encourages you to grow and learn. And all I ask is that a college will let me be a part of their learning environment. I am looking for a place full of diversity and opinion. I love the fact that people from all over the world come...

...Hello and thank you for reaching out to me regarding the 2017-2018 Myers family scholarship award. Unfortunately I did not get in to the Maricopa Concurrent Nursing Program this fall semester; I spoke with an advise who said that the waiting list can laste anywhere from a year to two and the half years. My plan for next year is to either start with the Maricopa Nursing Program if I happened to get in or I'm going to enroll in a private nursing school to complete my BSN in no time. I'm half way through with most of the classes most nursing school requires for a BSN, I did my research on the pricing, length of program, and the schools success rate. I will be starting with Brooklyn College in the spring of 2018, if I don't hear from Phoenix College...

Right now, I am just beginning my life's puzzle. I am not sure what the big picture looks like, but I know God has a purpose for me. ...Prompt 2: Are early educational institutions doing enough to prepare students for the college experience? Title Thesis: Even though attending college has its benefits, grade school lacks the proper foundation for students entering those institutions. In elementary school the curriculum is simple; children are being taught the basics of education letters, number, shapes, colors etc. Teachers provide more creative learning techniques which gives the students an option to understand the lesson. It is not only the subject taught in the class but the schedule the student adapts to around class time. At a young age children are put on a schedule starting with getting up, going to school and returning home. School is the midpoint and the highlight of the child’s day; therefore each day is based around their hours of learning. Students starting middle school may not be as excited to start because they know what comes next. In this stage of education, students are being introduced to class periods, more teachers and different subjects. These young adults have to deal with more personalities and different teaching techniques. Classroom requirements are no longer flexible; academic standards are not as ease to pass. ....

...Selvin Mathew College Map Scholarship Essay Send to clayton.stroleny@ey.com by Feb.2 Imagine a world where college or post secondary education was only available to a select few and withheld from others due to their family history, socioeconomic status, or even geopgraphy. Before being accepted into the College Map program by Ernst & Young (EY) for mentoring, I felt like I might have fallen under those statistics. Fortunately, through EY's scholarship information sessions, admission statistics, tips and Essays for College and Scholarships program, I now know what is actually available to students. If I had the power to change Miami Central in anyway, it would be to make the College Map program less exclusive, that is, to make College Map available to a larger segment of the student body; as it was made available to myself because nothing amounts to the value of a college education. Specifically, I would make College Map available or even mandatory for all 9-12th graders to have them prepped and ready for the transition to postsecondary education. Entering high school, the last thing on my mind was college. That is ironic because since College Map, I understand that I should have been preparing for higher education while in much sooner. Unfortunately, underclassmen commonly are not aware of the hectic college application process they’re about to embark on. However, it's not until junior and senior years that GPAs, Standardized tests and essay competitions become...

...SAT Good or Bad for College Aptitude? During our lifetime from starting off at preschool to kindergarten to years later on finally making your way to high school and even going off to college to find the right career path that you choose. But many start to feel as if what is the point of the SAT, like sure it helps show your ability to figure out problems and makes it even easier to go to college. But in my opinion i find that making high schools students take the SAT’s is pointless only because it takes time and a lot of frustrating studying, another reason that students shouldn't take the SAT because it makes it very hard to get a high score on it and lowers the self esteem of the students and makes them question their intelligence....

...The journey from high school to college will be challenging as far as time management and personal responsibilities. In high school, scheduled school days are structured based upon the portion of time during the day that stays the same every day. In college, the individual must make a drastic change to a more unpredictable and flexible schedule. Time management will be challenging for students because one will have to decide what time the courses will be taken and how those courses will align with other responsibilities. Personal responsibility is a wake up for call for college students. In college, the individual is responsible for what happens in their lives. One is responsible to make sure they are up for their 8am class because no one is there to wake them up to be sure that they are on time. It is the students’ responsibility to make sure that their assignments are complete and are turned in on time because the professor may not remind one of these things. In one’s younger years, it is easy to put the blame on others to make themselves feel better about their own fault. Both failures and success should be appointed to the person individually. Making the transition from high school to college will be the most challenging experience of many students’ lives. The transition from high school to college will build one’s character. School overall, both high school and college, help discover, refine, and test students’ character. Values and ethical systems of students individually...
