Renal cell carcinoma ( RCC ) is a kidney cancer; it is a type of cancer where there is an abnormal growth of cells in the kidney tissue, these cells form a big group called a tumor. Due to the change in the kidney cell cancer begins. Renal cell carcinoma affects the body numerously. The normal specialized cell grows out of number forming a tumor. Kidneys are responsible for filtering the blood, due to RCC, kidney cancer can lead to imbalancing of certain substance in the blood stream. This kind of cancer can also cause an increased red blood cell count. The tumor can also affect the urine system causing bleeding in the urine. RCC can also affect other body parts like the bone and lungs because of the spread of tumor. Lower back pain, lump, hematuria, anemia, fatigue, fever, weight loss are some symptoms of renal cell carcinoma. Lower back pain, pain near the lower back and to the side, just below the rib cage. Lump, because of the tumor, the lump is usually low in the abdomen, on the back, under the rib cage, or on the side of the body. Hematuria is when there is blood in the urine. This kind of cancer can be treated with surgery. There are usually 2 options of treatment if the person is in stage 1, 2, or 3. Partial nephrectomy, this surgery leads to taking part of the kidney where the 7 cm tumor is. Radical nephrectomy, this surgery is when the surgeons take the entire kidney out. The lymph nodes formed can also be taken out, if enlarged. If surgery cannot be done due to other medical problems, cryotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, or arterial embolization are some local treatments. Stage 4 kidney cancer is very dangerous, it is when the kidney cancer has grown outside of the kidney and has spread to other parts of the body like the lungs. In this case, the surgery removes both kidneys and metastasis (the outside area of kidney spread). Systemic therapy is an option that can be done if the surgery is not

Obesity

...adults in the United States are overweight or obese (2007). Research suggests that obesity may be the most preventable risk factor of cancer for non-smokers, and many studies are testing for the effects that obesity has in all cancers and at specific cancer sites. It is known that obesity plays a significant role in cancer; however, the knowledge of the relationship to all cancers and the overall health effect of excess weight in terms of total mortality from cancer is limited (Calle, Redriguez, Walker-Thurmond, & Thun, 2003). In this paper I will examine the research available on obesity and its relationship to breast cancer (in post-menopausal women), endometrial, colon, esophagus, kidney, and pancreatic cancers, and briefly mention a few other cancers currently being studied for a possible link to obesity. The rise of obesity in the last 25 years has been most prominent in the United States. It is not, however, limited to the United States; for instance, similar trends are being seen in other developing countries. As it becomes easier to access tasty but unhealthy food options and as physical activity declines, caloric intake is now exceeding caloric expenditure. Genetic factors have been shown to predispose an individual to become obese, but environmental factors are the ultimate cause for the rise of obesity within populations. It is the metabolic consequences of obesity that are having an effect on cancer cell growth. The effects of circulating peptide and steroid hormones...

Magnetic Nanoparticle in Cancer Therapy

...size of brain tumors when compared to patients who have no treatment at all. Beyond their use as diagnostics and physical tools to destroy cancerous tumors, magnetic nanoparticles are also used as a delivery agent for gene therapy. For example, magnetic nanoparticles have shown to increase the half life of the various biological matter such as DNA and RNA so that it can reach the intended target before the body’s immune response destroys the magnetic gene delivery system. In the future, research will be focused on pharmacokinetics of the nanoparticles, ensuring the nanoparticles can stay in the body for longer periods of time and that the body reacts in a positive manner to the magnetic nanoparticles. Introduction Nanotechnology has been an emerging field recently due to its widespread capabilities. Nanotechnology has been applied in many fields of biomedicine due to its potential in controlling the delivery of drugs, providing greater contrast in magnetic resonance imaging, cell and tissue targeting, and hyperthermia; all of which can be used in cancer therapy (Mulens, del Puerto Morales and...

... Introduction 3 II. Project Purpose 3 III. Project Methodology 3 IV. Body of the Paper 4 V. Conclusions 13 VI. References 14 I. Introduction I am a retired Army combat Veteran diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition, I am a survivor of Renal Cell Carcinoma commonly known as kidney cancer. Transitioning into the civilian sector made me curious about how civilians deal with American with disabilities. The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) is a civil rights law that protects employees with disabilities. The law prohibits employers from discriminating against individuals with physical and mental disabilities and the chronically ill. The Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was the first law to prohibit the discrimination of disabled in federally funded activities. This law did not protect the disabled under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Therefore, in 1990 Congress passed the Americans with Disabilities Act to protect this class of citizens. II. Project Purpose To learn the applicable laws and protections afforded employees under the ADA. III. Project Methodology I will research the laws governing the ADA by using books detailing the purpose of the Act. I will include periodicals, the internet, and all available sources to gather information and data. IV. Body of Paper 1. History before ADA America is a great melting pot and an example to the world of immigrants coming...
