Eveline’s Destiny
Joyce’s character Eveline desire’s more out of life. More happiness, respect, and love. She analyzes her past, her present, and dreams of the future. All the while seeking for someone else to provide the happiness she so longs for. Someone to come and take away all her pain and responsibility so she can live happily ever after. She must choose her destiny. Should she stay at home with her familiar yet unhappy life, or should she go away with Frank and leave her home like the others? Perhaps her mother’s last words will help her decide in the end, “Derevaun Seraun!” (513). The end of pleasure is pain.
Eveline remembers happiness and friendship in her past. Her life was more pleasurable when her mother was alive. Her father was much nicer to her then, he never abused her as he would her brothers. Playing in the field across the street every evening with her siblings and friends, brought Eveline much happiness until her father would chase them down waving his blackthorn stick. While reminiscing, memories of the deaths of her brother Ernest, Tizzie Dunn, and her mother came to her mind. Her promise she made to her mother cries in her head, “keep the home together for as …show more content…
She lives in fear of her father’s violence, even though she is nineteen. “He began to threaten her and say what he would do to her only for her dead mother’s sake.” (514). With her brothers gone, she has nobody to protect her, yet her familiar objects surrounding her bring her comfort and a sense of belonging. Since her father has aged, she is sure he will miss her. He could be nice at times. She had food and shelter, “she did not find it a wholly undesirable life.” (514). When her father found out that Frank was courting her, he said, “I know these sailor chaps.” (514). Then he had a fight with Frank and forbid Eveline from speaking to him. (513). ...Mike-Irabor English 1302: Composition 2 David Glen Smith, Instructor November 29, 2012 Research Paper Miss Emily Grierson and Eveline The family and society’s expectation of a woman has led to some women becoming tragic heroes and anti-heroes who battled consistently with their true identity. Literary works of William Faulkner in the short story, "A Rose for Emily", and James Joyce’s "Eveline", reflects the negative impact of these expectations. Based on information, culled from Dr David Smith’s notes, tragic heroes are driven and obsessed with past deeds or by fate, they are neither entirely good nor entirely bad and are fated to cause grief to individuals or to the community, they are often leaders in the community or head of family (2). Faulkner shows these common traits of tragic hero in Miss Emily Grierson; a protagonist in self-exile from the modern world, locked away in her decaying mansion (3). In James Joyce’s Eveline, a protagonist is revealed as tragic hero who endures a dramatic and tragic life full of conflicts, but Smith thinks otherwise, he refers to her as an anti-hero and is of the opinion that antihero should not be confused with tragic hero because, “existentialist believed modern life does not allow the existence of a true hero. Modern life dehumanizes everyone”(3), short of this, Eveline is a classic example of a tragic hero. This paper aims to address that gap. Design/methodology/approach – Interviews with 15 mentors and survey responses from 128 mentees are used to examine a formal mentoring programme. Most emphasis is on the perspective of the mentors, raising questions about how they view outcomes for themselves and their mentees, as well as the effects of mentoring on the workplace culture over time. Questions about the mentoring relationship, including gender differences, are analysed against the background of a decade-long organisational change strategy. Findings – Mentors report significant benefits for themselves and the mentee as well as the organisation itself as a result of their participation. The findings suggest that a long-term mentoring programme for women has the potential to be an effective organisational change intervention.
