...The film Silver Linings Playbook follows Pat Solatano, who has a bipolar disorder, as he is discharged from a mental health institution after his court mandated 8-month treatment and is set to move in with his parents. Pat’s institutionalization and diagnosis of his bipolar disorder was due to the beating of a man that his wife was having an affair with. Upon being released, Pat is unwilling to take his medication, because he does not like the way it makes him feel, and he is also reluctant to go to his mandated therapy sessions. His goals are to get his old job as a substitute teacher back and to get back together with his wife who has already left him and got a restraining order against him. Pat’s friend Veronica invites him to dinner where...

...1. Description of “abnormal” behavior Pat Solatano was released from a mental institution after eight months of treatment due to a triggering event that caused him to beat a man nearly to death for sleeping with his wife. This was after previously having a delusion of his wife and that man going against the school they work at by embezzling money. He was a danger to others by getting very angry and aggressive when he heard his wedding song because that was playing when he caught his wife cheating, or if he sees someone he loves get hurt. We learned in his first therapy session after being released that he was being defiant for not taking his medication because it made him feel worse about himself physically and mentally. When anything in life was seen negatively, Pat experienced significant distress and was unable to comprehend the reason to it. For example, after finishing a novel by Ernest Hemmingway that had a death at the end, he became enraged and threw the book out the window and woke up his parents in the middle of the night continuously talking about how upset he was. When Pat experienced his manic stage, he was unable to cope like someone without a mental illness. The moment he couldn’t find the video tape from his wedding, he began to panic and frantically looking all over the house while yelling in the middle of the night causing him to wake up his neighbors, and led to him accidentally hitting his mom in the face and getting into a fight with his dad afterwards....

...Emily Kraft, RN “Silver Linings Playbook” Review: Family Dynamics Trocaire College Everybody has a little bit of crazy in them right? The film Silver Linings Playbook is the perfect example of this statement. The movie was released in 2012 and was based on the novel The Silver Linings Playbook. The film was a blockbuster in the theaters along with winning countless Academy Awards and Golden Globe nominations. The Solitano family had many issues that were portrayed over time such as marriage problems, gambling, losing jobs, lying, mental problems, relationship problems; you name it and they had it. If it weren't for everyday common struggles among the average American family, people wouldn't know how to fight for their families or cope with the choices and consequences. I believe that these circumstances make us better and much stronger people, and we therefore, end up with stronger relationships within our family and friendships. Out of the list of films provided to choose from, I chose Silver Linings Playbook because I had heard many great things from fellow coworkers and friends. I'm surprised I hadn't watched it any sooner than I did. The film really showed me every individual within an average family lives day to day with internal struggles that are hard to overcome without the help of a support network. The main character, Pat Solitano Jr., who is played by Bradley Cooper, is a man with bipolar disorder who just left a psychiatric hospital in Maryland to return home...

The two happen to become closer as they practice and Pat, his father, and Tiffany inspect their relationships with each other as they deal with their problems. Pat Solitano used to be a high school history teacher who was married to an English teacher. He beat up, and nearly killed, a colleague teacher whom he found out in the shower with his wife. By court arrangement, he was limited for eight months to a psychiatric institution, with a judgment of bipolar disorder. Throughout the movie, Pat has completed his obligatory detention, having no career and nowhere else to live. He goes to stay with his parents hoping to get his wife back, who has taken out a restraining order against...

...Media Portrayal of Bipolar Disorder Stories portraying individuals with mental health disorders are presented throughout the film industry all the time, but whether or not the disorder is portrayed in an accurate manner always seems to be the underlying question. Ultimately the film business is set up to sell a story, yet in doing so, accuracy tends to get altered in order to create a film that will draw an audience in. Although the mental disorder is secondary to the main storyline, the film, “Silver Linings Playbook”, adequately portrays an individual with Bipolar disorder. Even though some inconsistencies were noted related to the treatment and symptoms of the disorder, storytellers succeed in the ability to demonstrate diagnosis as well as various signs and symptoms of Bipolar disorder. According to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, diagnosis of Bipolar 1 Disorder requires the individual to meet the standards for a manic episode that lasts throughout the day, for seven days, or experiences a manic episode that results in hospitalization in order to prevent harm to ones self or others...

...The theme of love, specifically the challenges of being in love, is seen in both “The Great Gatsby” by author F. Scott Fitzgerald and “The Silver Linings Playbook” by author Matthew Quick. Love is shown in “The Great Gatsby” with the quote "She didn't know you were alive. Why There are things between Daisy and me that you'll never know, things that neither of us can ever forget.” The words seemed to bite physically into Gatsby.”(Pg. 73) this shows the theme because in this case Gatsby’s challenge is his unrequited love for Daisy, the theme is also shown here "You're acting like a little boy," I broke out impatiently. ” (Pg. 46) Because when Gatsby finally gets the chance to talk to Daisy he freezes up and that is a challenge because he can’t...

...First off I would like to say that I had about a whole paragraph typed up explaining why I never had literature change my perspective before. I don’t like to read at all and I have only read 3 books in my entire life. Two of those books I was forced to read due to school. There was one book that I rented from a library in high school that actually not only changed my perspective but it molded my thinking of what I wanted to do in my life. The book was called House to House A Soldiers Memoir. Staff Sergeant Bellavia’s book tells about his time he spent in Fallujah which is located just outside of Baghdad. As I was reading this book it was so graphic and horrifying you would think it was a fictional book. That wasn’t the case though. The things the soldiers in this book went through left me wondering what I was doing for others and most of all my country. I really want to elaborate on how this book changed me. I remember the first day I understood why I love our great nation. I was just a kid when it happened. It was the year of 2001, in the ninth month, on the eleventh day of the month is when I watched the towers fall. I began to see how people come together as a country. So lets fast forward nine years with this book in my hand. The second battle of Fulljah was one of the bloodiest battles of the Irag War. The way these soldiers looked out for one another while they were battling evil. This wasn’t fairy tale evil either, this was real evil. I felt sorrow for the soldiers that...

...Is the glass half-empty or half-full? An age old question that discovers how one views the world. Many people see the glass half empty, but should they see it as half-full? Everyone faces some sort of conflict, and they approach it in many different ways. Some methods work better than others, but one way has the most beneficial results. Facing conflict with optimism inspires others, has health benefits, and makes it easier for the person to deal with the problem. Having an optimistic attitude inspires others. There are many resources that show having a hopeful attitude makes people around them feel more comfortable. Winston Churchill wrote a speech convincing the citizens of Great Britain that they needed to remain confident in him; and believe their government could win the war. He started by describing how hard Great Britain will work to defeat the evils opposing their nation. Winston Churchill said, “You ask, what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea, and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us, and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy” (Churchill, 368). Churchill had the grueling task of informing the nation on how Great Britain would attack Germany. Nevertheless, he strived for the nation to remain hopeful that their country would win the war. “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat” stated, “I take up my task in buoyancy and hope. I feel sure that...

...disability. In this paper, I will be comparing two films, a documentary and feature film, about mental disability. The documentary that I will be using in this analysis is People Say I’m Crazy, a 1989 documentary film by California Mental Health and Silver Lining Playbook(2012) an Academy Award nominated feature film. The comparison will be as followed: a topics will be presented, next the findings in the documentary, and finally how mental illness is portrayed in the feature film. In this paper I will talk about medical treatment, family and community support, and media representation of people with mental illness. Before I jump into these topics, a summary of these two films are necessary to provide context. People Says I’m Crazy People Says I’m Crazy is a 56 minute documentary by the California Network of Mental Health Clients made in 1989. This documentary is based on the findings from the Well-Being Project, a survey conducted in 1987 to explore what factors promote or deter the well-being of persons commonly labeled as mental ill in California. The statistics from the Well-Being Project survey are included in the documentary to provide focus by the mental health consumers relate their experiences. Silver Lining Playbook In this film Patrick “Pat” Solatano, Jr. (played by Bradley Cooper), a diagnosed bipolar mental patient, is released from a mental health facility in Baltimore after eight months into the care of his parents Dolores and Pat Sr. Pat learns that his...

...The magnificent, fruitful, and long-lasting collaboration between the American film director, David O. Russell, and the trendy actors, Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, mirrored in “Silver Linings Playbook” and “American Hustle”, was now shaken. I’m saying this because “Joy”, a semi-fictional comedy-drama inspired on the real life of Joy Mangano, a divorced mother turned into a respectful businesswoman after inventing the Miracle Mop, is a minor film whose story, narrated by her deceased grandmother, uses the same goofy tones of a soap-opera. Here, business and family play a strong role, but the story is deficiently constructed, wriggling and wriggling without finding solid ground to stabilize. The utterly banal storytelling and the ungracious...

..."Josh [Hutcherson], Liam [Hemsworth], Woody [Harrelson] – we know each other. These people know more about me than anybody on the planet! So it's bizarre for it to end. It does feel over." Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly reported, at an early age of 25, Lawrence already got a long list of her achievements. She already won an Oscar award for “Silver Linings Playbook” when she was 22 and one of the most bankable actress in Hollywood. She was first nominated for Academy Awards for “Winter’s Bone” in 2010, starred the box-office hit Suzanne Collins-inspired film and was known for her role as Mystique in the “X-Men” movie series. “It’s crazy. I signed on to these projects when I was 20 years old. I remember being like, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to be 25 when I’m finished. It seemed so far away.” Lawrence also said goodbye to her character as Katniss Everdeen now that the “Mockingjay: Part 2” hit the theaters. “It does feel over. It didn’t for a while and I didn’t think it would ever sink in, but it has now. It feels over. And that’s okay. It’s okay to move...

...illness into more of an aesthetic. A 2013 study found that thirty-four percent of individuals had lied about having a mental illness (Cheung, 2018). The interest in mental illness has only risen. Communities and blogs on Tumblr have risen stating that mental illnesses are what make individuals beloved and therefore, in order to become loved, they should not receive treatment. Believers in such ideology argue against both therapy and medications, citing the idea that others are unable to sympathize and nothing is solvable (Cheung, 2018). While the media portrayal is overwhelmingly negative, there are pieces of work that receive praise for their portrayal of mental illness. Young (2013) uses the example of psychologist praised Silver Linings Playbook, which received recognition for its portrayal of a family at its breaking point and gives an accurate overview of bipolar disorder without glamorizing the effects. The children’s animated movie Frozen received positive recognition for its allegorical showing of mental illness (Young, 2013). Many individuals related to the main character Elsa as she isolated herself because of the ice powers that caused her to be different from everyone else, but as the movie went on, she learned to accept herself and her abilities. Many saw her acceptance of herself as their own acceptance their mental illness (Young, 2013). CONCLUSION...
