...SnapChat Company Overview SnapChat is a photo messaging application (App) developed by Evan Spiegel and Robert Murphy. Both of the founders were Stanford students. The application was initially developed for a project at Stanford. This app allows the user to share photos, videos, add text/drawings, and send them to a controlled list of recipients. Users have the benefit of setting a time limit for how long the recipient can view their snaps (Ranging from 1 - 10 seconds), after which the photos/videos will be hidden from the recipient’s device and deleted from SnapChat’s servers. The smalltime college project developed into a huge social media success due to its innovative feature (Magid, 2013). SnapChat is one of the fastest growing social applications ever. For a relatively new company, which was founded in 2011, SnapChat has reached dizzying heights of social media traffic. The company at present shares a minimum of 400 million photos daily. This is even higher than the 350 million photo shared on Facebook daily. Due to the immense popularity the app enjoys, many companies target SnapChat to market their brands. This provides a major source of revenue for the company (Malukas, 2014). The company rose to fame in 2013 when Facebook offered to buy out SnapChat for a whopping $3 billion. But SnapChat declined the offer and the details were splashed around in online tabloids thereby elevating SnapChat’s brand name (Colao, 2014). The SnapChat brand logo is called Ghostface...

...Having the opportunity to observe the same student body that I did in a much different setting last year proved to be an interesting study on the similarities and differences between the games. Many things were similar, including norms of dress, status and the observable social stratification. The majority of the student population also stood clumped together and danced/cheered as they had before. Diversity of race, gender, and even age was again observed within this homogenous group. The use of technology was still extremely present. However, this year, the focus seemed to be on the Snapchat platform. Using the new location story search, Stephanie and I were able to observe some of the public Snapchat stories posted by students in the area, though none were from the game but rather came mostly from a local coffee shop. A key observation I was keen to check up on was the behavior and dances of the cheer team, notably suggestive in nature last year. This year, rather, the dance was much more structured and less sultry, most noticeably influenced by what we observed to be a new cheer coach. There was also a gay presence on the cheer team, which seemed to be well received and supported from those...

Whether its Instagram to post cute selfies and stalk an ex, or Snapchat to follow and keep up with other people lives, or Facebook to stay in contact with family and post accomplishments or perhaps Twitter to constantly stay in communication with others. I am a heavy consumer of technology myself. I don’t have every social media that are available to the public, but I am still very active on the internet. I constantly check my phone for notifications, or glance to see if I received a new text or call. It can be overwhelming at times. I am also guilty of not eating a meal until I have took pictures and uploaded it on my Snapchat or one of my fitness community apps like Fitbit or MyPlate, seeking for appraisal from others or to simply share new recipes. I am also constantly on Pinterest scrolling for new recipes to make, or googling why my right ear is itching, just to get a list of terminally ill diseases I might have. I am also always on OfferUp and Letgo.Part of being a manager at a cellphone shop means posting phones and items we have for sale, and constantly keeping up with interested buyers. I can say I'm...

...individuals prefer to have their significant others on Snapchat and Twitter because it essentially let couples keep up with each other. I asked one of my classmates what is the significance of Twitter in her relationship and she stated how she can vent about any of her relationships problems on there without being judged. This was surprising to me because she said that was a good thing about Twitter but I thought that it would cause more problems than just talking about your problems with your significant other. I believe Twitter could have both a positive and negative experience on relationships and with my research my hypothesis turned out to be somewhat true. After interviewing nearly...

...Snapchat is a media platform built around the privacy. Its concept of disappearing pictures and videos has made it one of the more unique social media applications that exists today. Subject X can be found on Snapchat frequently throughout this twenty-four hour period. In most instances, Subject X goes into Snapchat to check updates of contacts’ stories. The subject rarely actively engages in content production for Snapchat, but simply observes the activities of contacts via their Snapchat stories. ...For most who don’t yet use Snapchat frequently I know the economic case feels like a stretch of the imagination because you’re caught up in the original Snapchat and I’m trying to offer a perspective about where the puck may be going. It’s up to Team Snapchat to live up to its financial expectations but I believe it certainly has the potential. I’ve heard the new media doubters before as nobody thought Google, Facebook or Twitter would ever make money. From the business perspective you need to understand a few things about media and video in particular. The following factors matter a great deal to media: reach, immediacy, authenticity/endemic, engagement, geography and brand recall/uniqueness. Snapchat is performing off the hook on all fronts. 1. Reach Unless you work at Snapchat or are on the board – nobody really knows how many users they have but I think it’s well reported to be a shit-ton. Most people seem to accept that daily users are at least 100 million with monthly users > 200 million, perhaps higher. Any which way, Snapchat has large “reach,” which is a key measure for any advertiser. There is also a reported 8 billion videos viewed per day. And if you’re stuck thinking these are just kids sending stupid pictures to each other then you’re stuck in the past and simply won’t understand new media and how it’s changing. The huge leap forward for YouTube was UGC (user generated content) but this emerged into new stars, new ways of producing content and new ways of consuming...

...INTRODUCTION Snapchat is a mobile social media application that allows individuals, who have the application downloaded, to send timed pictures, messages, and videos to other users. A common practice of the Snapchat application is posting a story, which is video/picture content that a user posts digitally for their friends to view for a twenty-four hour period. The belief behind this practice is that this feature helps users maintain relationships with their network through regular updates. The question can be posed, what different types of self performance are found in Snapchat stories? Is the performance deeply rooted in a need to be connected to our social networks? Previous research suggests that users on social media networking sites...
