...Contact Sports Head/Body Injuries Research Paper November 19, 2013 Down, Set, Hut, Hut! The ball snaps, and everyone clashes into each other like warriors in battle. This is what we love about the game of football. While we are enjoying this rugged game, behind the scenes there are players in pain on and off of the field. From them having concussions to broken toes, or in other words from head to toe, every game possibly being there last one depending on the extremity of their next injury they still continue to play and entertain us. In this paper we are going to journey through some of those injuries and issues due to this sport we love and how we could help solve it, and help these athletes we love so much be able to stay in the game of football a little longer. To start off, although we’re just focusing on NFL, I have to let you know it’s not just affecting them, but the little ones we having playing this sport as well. In an article I read entitled, “Hits to the Head Don’t Differ in Age, Research Indicates”, it says that more 25,000 kids ranging from ages 8 to 19 are taken to the emergency room seeking treatment for concussions each year (Belson, 2013). This goes to say that although we enjoy when the adults are doing all this physical contact, but when it’s our own kids do we feel the same way? Well, in this case think of those NFL players as you do your children. What if they could never play again, on or off of the field? In reading another article by Sabrina Rogers...

...Cassidy Hanson (W0495976) PSYC 101 SEC 1 Sport Psychology Sport psychology is simply the psychology that goes with athletic activity and exercise. This subfield of psychology is used mostly with athletes and coaches to test the athletes speed, agility and improve his or her motivation. This paper will provide some insight on how this subfield of psychology came to be, some examples of certain topics discussed and researched as well as some examples of research still used today. First let us begin on the history of sport psychology. Sport psychology is a relatively new subfield of psychology dating back to the 1920s. A psychologist by the name of Coleman Griffith organized the first American sport psychology laboratory at UIC. After a few years, in the 1930s the laboratory got shut down due to insufficient funding. This did not stop Coleman Griffith when he consulted with professional sports teams like the Chicago Cubs. Meanwhile three men from Stanford University, B.C. Graves, Walter Miles and football coach Glenn Warner, all created and experiment to find the fastest way to get the offense to run together once the center hikes the ball. Miles created a durable chronoscope to...

...Cedric Fierce 4/22/16 9th Final Paper Mild TBI / Concussion Report Rough Draft On average, 43,267,200 concussions occur at the high school level every year. That’s over 43 million 14-18 year olds, suffering from traumatic post-concussion symptoms and the slippery slope of brain damage caused by concussions. The increase of concussions in sports has had a major effect on athletes and should be re evaluated for safety precautions. Brain damage is caused by a concussion: "Defined as a complex pathophysiological process affecting the brain, induced by biomechanical forces” (Halstead 1). In English, it can be described as "A mild brain injury usually caused by a bump or blow to the head” (Tasian 1). “Mild: used to describe the trauma of the physical...

...make sure that they plays are executed right and that every team member knows what position they play and how to play that position properly. The coach is constantly doing everything they can for the team, the coach devotes their life to the team that is being coached. There are three main topics of focus for this paper, they are; sports related injuries, how to properly motivate the team and better them as a team and individuals, and bullying in the sport. First, there are a lot of sports related injuries that occur when playing basketball. The most common is an ankle injury, it can be injured in the muscles, the tendons, or the joints. “Muscle strength and balance around the lower limb joints may play an important role for performance and injury prevention in basketball” (Gerodimos 1). When coaching a basketball team, the coach must look after his players to make sure that they do not get a sports related injury that could easily be avoided with proper training. When coaches plan out the exercises that they are going to do with their team, they often add exercises that add torque around the muscle joints to make sure that they are getting worked properly. Every sports...

...may span for about 3 ½ years (Stradley, 2011). (Workman Pub Co, 2002) The NFL has added several new teams, provided innovative equipment, additional rules, distinctive playing styles, but most importantly there has been a revolutionary change of the NFL culture. The game of football is being played at a faster pace and players are becoming larger, and intelligent (Wharton, 2011). While the sport of football can be stressful, competitive, entertaining and enjoyable, it also poses a dangerous threat of injury. One of the more common injuries within playing or watching football are concussions. Over the past few years concussions have become a more serious endangerment to those who play, from new evidence we have seen on the effects on the brain and how it can affect a player’s future. The purpose of this project is to investigate the current status of football and concussions in finding a solution to reducing head trauma in players as it pertains to the following areas: overall safety for the players, NFL culture, equipment, research efforts, and the future of football. According to CBS Sports (2011), more than 61% of former players have experienced concussions during their time in the league. The first section will discuss on what concussions are, what cause them to occur, what symptoms may be brought...

...enter with its service of pediatric sports medicine The three markets that the orthopedic group could ender that will allow it to earn large profits is the education market, children social networking market such as the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association), and minor sporting teams. This paper also describes the barriers to enter and exit the internal medicine market for a physician wanting to establish a solo practice, a company offering a health club facility in the same building where employees work, and hospital wanting to develop a coronary bypass program. Lastly this paper will answer the hypothetical question on three ways to make services unique to the population of baby boomers in San Antonio, Texas. Three Potential Markets for a Pediatric Sports Medicine Program to Enter Three markets that the orthopedic group could enter with their service of pediatric sports medicine would be the Education Market (Elementary, Middle, and High School), the Children Social Networking Market such as the YMCA, and Minor League Sport Teams. According to Katherine Lee from about.com “kids between 5 and 14 years of age account for as much as 40% of all sports-related injuries”(Lee, 2003). With that fact being known, the orthopedic group could hire physicians to work with local schools to teach kids how to prevent sport related injuries and what to do in the event they are injured. For example, sprains are one of the most common types of injuries among children. The orthopedic group...

...Martland. Martland began to notice a group of related symptoms in boxers (confusion, speech problems, tremors, and slow movement). He published an article entitled “Punch Drunk,” in which he describes the boxers as, “cuckoo,” “goofy,” “cutting paper dolls,” or “slug nutty” (Journal of the American Association, 1928). Later, this was termed dementia pugilistica, which actually means dementia of a fighter. With the growth of our sports like American football, symptoms of CTE were being reported in a number of athletes other than boxers and in the 1960s, it was renamed Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. CTE has become a very popular topic because of its close association with American football, soccer hockey, boxing, and professional wrestling. Several of the affected athletes are retired, but have struggled in their late years with anger, depression, substance abuse, memory/motor disturbances, and suicide. Autopsy results from these particular athletes have proposed a link between these cognitive, emotional, and physical manifestations and CTE. In addition to athletes, soldiers have become another group of concern being that many are returning from the battlefield and have brain injuries along with blast trauma causing closed head injury. This disorder is characterized by physiological and neurological changes in the brain, including the protein Tau. This protein builds up in places of the brain where it should not be and also forms clumps around the brain, causing brain dysfunction...

...have casted a dark shadow over sports throughout the last decade. They are the most common head and brain injuries suffered by athletes. A concussion is “a type of traumatic brain injury that is caused by a blow to the head or body, a fall, or another injury that jars or shakes the brain inside the skull” ("Concussion - WebMD: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention"). The major problem regarding concussions is that they are not visible to the human eye. Concussions occur all the way from Pop Warner leagues as a child to the professional leagues. My friend has played football his whole life. Unfortunately, he has been plagued by concussions ever since he started to play the sport. He is a prime example of an ordinary kid who plays a sport he loves, but has altered his future forever. Commissioners are actively trying to reduce the number of head injuries that occur while playing. However, the main problem regarding head injuries in sports is that players tend to rush back to their respective sports, without proper testing and treatment. This results in athletes risking their playing careers, a life filled with long-term head complications, and eventually putting their lives in danger. As an injured athlete, there comes a point where you have to ask yourself, is rushing back to the game really worth a lifetime filled with head injuries and complications? So what do team doctors need to do differently when treating head injuries? Junior Seau and Sidney Crosby...

...Brain Injuries Learning Team A University of Phoenix PSY 340 Biological Foundations of Psychology 28 March 2016 Abstract Thesis Statement: In this paper we will discuss different kinds of brain injuries, the functions of neural plasticity and the limitations of neural plasticity. The first thing that is discussed in the paper in different brain injuries. We go into depth about five different brain injuries that include blood clots, hematomas, concussions, strokes and cerebral edema. Once we have covered brain injuries we discuss the functions of neural plasticity in brain injuries. An important thing that is discussed with neural plasticity is the recovery from a brain injury, what is required during recovery and how long recovery from a brain injury can take. The last thing that is discussed in this paper is the limitations of neural plasticity with brain injuries. Keywords: brain, injuries, plasticity, neural “Each year, traumatic brain injuries (TBI) contribute to a substantial number of deaths and cases of permanent disability. TBI is a contributing factor to a third (30.5%) of all injury-related deaths in the United States.” (cdc.gov) Robert has experienced a traumatic brain injury that is going to affect him for the rest of his life. Brain injuries are serious, and should be treated as such. For some people brain injuries go unnoticed and untreated leaving it to be deadly, but for others it is caught and treated but the healing process is extensive. In...

...Haylee Bowers Research Paper 11/20/13 In today’s society, cruelty towards animals is growing rapidly because people don’t understand the value of an animal’s life. People all around the world use and abuse animals as if it was some kind of national sport, and everybody is competing for the first place gold medal. Ever year millions of animals are being beaten and starved because of heartless people. Animal cruelty is a social issue that many people don’t understand. All the people who abuse animals don’t understand when they are harming an innocent animal are going to continue to do it until they are shown what they are doing wrong. Each type of abuse has certain patterns that scientists can study and find out why people commit the crimes they do. Animal cruelty is broken down into two categories, which are active and passive. Active cruelty is also known as NAI (non-accidental injury). NAI is when a person has malicious intent so fierce that they deliberately and intentionally cause harm to an animal. On the other hand with passive cruelty a person doesn’t intentionally cause harm to the animal, they simple neglect it by giving it no attention. While I was doing the research for this essay, I thought non-stop about how a human being could break a dogs leg, back, or even neck and feel no sympathy for the dog? Are some people in this world that heartless that they have no feelings for other living things? I wonder if you asked a person that has abused an animal if they...

...Berryman Sport in Modern Society Concussions in Sport: An Analytical Discussion “I had no idea what a nickel was (Kevin Kolb, The Concussion Blog).” NFL quarterback Kevin Kolb has suffered three major concussions since 2010 (Galliford, Buffalorumblings). His most recent one just this past August effectively ended his football career. This is just one example of the many in which multiple or severe concussions have cut short careers in sports. The issue of player safety in sport has become a topic of controversy and debate in recent years. Many professional leagues such as the NFL and the NHL have adopted strict concussion test protocols and procedures for its players. Player safety has no doubt become a major concern in contact sports. The problem is, many of these regulations have yet to address what happens after playing careers are over. What happens to former players’ mental and physical health after they retire? How do players whom have suffered multiple concussions playing contact sports live their lives as opposed to players whom have played non-contact sports such as golf or baseball? What will be questioned in this analysis is do known players that have suffered multiple and/or severe concussions throughout their playing careers due to playing a contact sport develop abnormally high levels of mental and physical health problems at an early age? Previous history on the attempts to lower the frequency of severe injury and concussions...

... Horseback riding and head injuries Introduction Horseback riding or just horse riding is the skill of driving, riding, vaulting or steeple-chasing with horses. Since time immemorial, horse riding (also referred to as equestrianism) has been an important aspect of human culture. In the last centuries, it was done mostly for utilitarian purposes such as work, warfare and transportation. In the present, horse riding is most commonly for recreational activities. Many people who like riding horses do it either for fun or for competition purposes (Kate 24). About 30 million people in America ride horses every year. However, there are approximately 2500 cases of riders who are below the age of 25 years being admitted to hospitals every year due to cases of horse riding injuries (Michael 201). A good number of these injuries are those related to head and brain. The risk of injuries in horseback riding is significantly greater than in bicycle riding. They occur because some of the activities like jumping are very risky since horses can be as heavy as 1500 pounds, move as fast as 30 miles per hour, and can stand as tall as 3 meters. Most of these injuries result when the horse falls off, or the horse rider is thrown forward and lands on his/her head or striking their heads on a nearby object like poles. Some of the factors which may increase the chances of falling and causing injuries to the riders are like slippery footing, bareback riding...
