Creating Communication through Shifts

Communication mishaps tend to cause issues that increase friction between team members. When the director first arrived as a new employee, she discovered that there was not an efficient and effective way that important information was delivered from shift to shift. The lack of effective communication was given as an excuse for not following specific directions because the staff could state that they didn’t know, or understand, or that they had never heard the directions. When direction was given to the staff verbally by various staff members, it was being mis-communicated according to the needs and desires and preferences of the one communicating it second- hand. There was a need to find a way to positively communicate important information verbally and in written format.
The director also saw a direct correlation to cultural differences and communication issues. Those aids who were of African American descent had a difficult time taking direction from a “rich, white lady”. According to Guffey (2011), to be able to achieve intercultural proficiency one must have tolerance and not ethnocentricity. Ethnocentrism causes one to judge others by their own values. “We expect others to respond as we would, and then expect us to behave as they would” (p. 88). This was also occurring on the unit where there was a communication gap between what is expected as proper manners to an upscale population (the population who lived on the unit) and what was actually done. An example of this is that the staff had never set a formal table setting. So, when asked to do the task, they did not have the tools to be able to do it properly. Also, acceptable language among their friends, such as quick reactionary sarcastic responses, was clearly unacceptable and offensive to the population they were asked to
