...Tyler Anderson Dr. Kirk Exercise Physiology Sunday, December 4, 2011 Moderate-Intensity Exercise and its Reduction of Chronic Stress Burnout in College Women who Perform no Regular Physical Activity Introduction: If you were to go out and ask 12 random people on the street what their definition of stress was, you would more than likely get 12 different answers. This is due to the fact that there is not a definition of stress that everyone can agree on. In 1936, Hans Selye coined the term stress, defining it as “the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change” (“Stress, Definition”). Stress can cause a multitude of cognitive, emotional, physical, and behavioral effects on the human body: memory problems, depression or general unhappiness, chest pain and rapid heartbeat, procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities. One of the most common activities utilized to reduce stress is aerobic exercise. Exercise increases blood flow that will bring additional nutrients and oxygen to the brain to allow for better cognitive function. Exercise will also release endorphins that can give the individual a feeling of happiness and positively affect your sense of well-being. The transition from a high school to a college environment can place substantial demand of change on the body. Students go from living in the comfort of their homes to the cramped space of a dorm room. Students will also experience demands of having a load and level of homework they are...

...History of Singapore How Singapore Came to Develop Its High Tech Industry Other than location the only resource that could be a basis for the economic development and prosperity of Singapore is its labor force, more specifically the training of its labor force. Singapore could not hope to compete upon the basis of the cheapness of its labor; it had to create technical skills that are unavailable elsewhere in the Third World. The local industry was limited to trade and did not have the capability of creating export industry. Singapore, under the leadership of Lee Kuan Yew, sought to bring in foreign industry. But, with much of the Third World trying to do the same thing it was not an easy task. One of the first goals was to make potential employers aware of the relative incorruptibility of the Singaporean bureaucracy. In much of the world laws are arbitrary and subject to change by the government. Corporations do not want to risk investing millions of dollars in facilities in an area where various elements of the government can take part or all of it at any time. The laws in Singapore might not be exactly to the liking of foreign companies but they would be fairly enforced. This proved to be a highly attractive feature of Singapore. The tax system was also attractive to foreign companies, often giving lower tax rates for foreign investment than for local residents. One of the keys to Singaporean development was the upgrading of infrastructure, streets, roads, an airport...

...A Cochrane review found low-to-moderate quality evidence that acupuncture improves pain and stiffness, but the effect was similar to that of sham acupuncture. In addition, in this Cochrane review, the benefit only lasted up to 1 month after therapy. There was also a suggestion that electroacupuncture, in which current is conducted through electrodes attached to acupuncture needles, may be more effective than manual acupuncture. However, this review was also limited by a paucity of large, well-designed trials. Acupuncture is traditionally used as only one component of a holistic, individualized treatment plan. One recent RCT (N=162) evaluated acupuncture in a more naturalistic clinical setting (Vas). In this study, women with fibromyalgia were referred from their primary care doctors to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioners who applied customized acupuncture treatments in 20-minute weekly sessions for 9 weeks based on the patient’s TCM diagnosis. The control intervention was the sham application of empty guide tubes to the back without puncturing the skin. At 6-month follow up, there was a small improvement in overall well-being, moderate improvement in pain, and moderate improvement in physical function. These effects were attenuated at 1 year, but there were additional confounders such as increased antidepressant use at this time...

...Fostering a Culture of Resilience through Awareness and Engagement The question of how often things like plan reviews, BIAs, or exercises should occur is often raised. The text book response is “annually and as updates are required”. The problem is we lock in on “annually” and when that happens it becomes a “check-box” activity. That’s’ fine if compliance is our goal. However, the business environment is in a constant state of flux. BIA and plan information can quickly become dated. To give our Crisis Management Team every chance to succeed we must think in terms of “perpetually”. Over time the organization will develop a “culture of resilience” as awareness activities become a regular happening. Developing a “Culture of Resilience” Executive leadership must take an active interest in resiliency,...

...I WAS attracted to Unilever because of the quality of the training and the investment they were willing to put into their trainees. I was an inexperienced student and they were prepared to put a lot of commitment behind me. They look after you. It was very competitive, and there were an awful lot of very good candidates. I sometimes thought: 'Why should they choose me?', but once I had been to a few interviews I picked up on what they were looking for. They wanted someone with individuality, and who was involved in all aspects of university life. Someone who made use of their vacations to get experience in business or follow up other interests, rather than spend a few weeks on the dole. They are looking for people who work particularly well in a team. Solo activities are not as positive; they want people who enjoy company. I decided, anyway, I could only be myself, and if that fitted into what they wanted then things would work out. If you try to be something different then it all just ends in tears at some stage. In the beginning I spent a minimum of 10 to 12 hours a day in the office, sometimes more, and occasionally worked at weekends, which was a shock. I was used to a 30-hour week, which was a lot for a university course, but nowhere near as demanding. I didn't really know what was expected of me. Only after being there for some time did I think: 'I can say no. I am in charge of my own work schedule.' I felt this immense pressure to do everything, and it all had...

...Professional Presence and Influence Bergetter Harper Western Governor’s University Professional Presence and Influence I’m focusing on the mind/body/spirit health model. I consider myself a spiritual person and I rely on my relationship with God through prayer to help me make the right decision, not only in my personal life, but in my professional life as well. Professional Presence Models of Health and Healing The mind/body/spirit health model is the most interesting health model for me because I believe and depend on a higher power. Era III is the one of the most interesting era’s in health and healing because technology has come a long way in helping our society deal with getting rid of diseases. It has integrated science and technology in a way that is continuing to help us grow and learn about health and healing. Dr. Larry Dossey (1999) explores three eras of medicine. Mind-body –according to Dr. Dossey, the second era of medicine emerged after World War II circa 1950 with the breakthrough knowledge of ailments affecting one’s mind having a direct correlation with physical ailments. Unlike medical practices in era I the physical body model, this was the beginning of medical professionals treating ailments beyond the visible wounds and subjective data. Now practitioners began to look at the patient a whole human being with complex needs and understanding mental defects such as depression could be manifested physically with ramifications such as weight gain, fatigue...

People told them that it is normal for kids have imaginations and imaginary friends, but it became different to her parents when the imaginary friends controlled their daughter and she didn’t control them. The adults with schizophrenia in the documentary introduced their issues with greater intellect and used critical thinking in talking about how their medications and treatment effected their everyday living. It seems they also had a better understanding...

...BRITISH LITERATURE (Collected by Trần Quang Nhu) 1. THE GARDEN PARTY by Katherine Mansfield 1. Plot Summary .The cloudless summer day is perfect for the garden party at the home of the well-to-do Sheridan family. Before breakfast ends, four workmen arrive to set up the marquee (a tent or canopy to shield partygoers from the elements). Because Meg has just washed her hair and Jose is still in her petticoat, Mrs. Sheridan assigns the task of supervising the men to Laura. Taking a piece of buttered bread with her, Laura goes outside to begin her task. .......When she suggests that the men–all smiling and quite friendly–set up the marquee on the lily lawn, a fat man considers the idea but a tall man man says it would not get enough attention there. "You want to put it somewhere where it'll give you a bang slap in the eye." Laura wonders whether it is respectful of a laborer to speak to a girl of her upbringing in the crude language (bang slap) of the common people. .......Laura then recommends a corner of the tennis court. Although a band will be playing on the court, she says, there will still be room for the marquee. Another man suggests placing the marquee against the karaka trees. Laura dislikes the idea of hiding the broad leaves and yellow fruit of the karakas, but the workmen are already heading toward them with the staves and rolls of canvas. She is impressed that one workman stops to smell lavender. Too bad the boys who come calling...
