...The explosive movie “300” garners a wide range of praise and criticism from fans and critics alike. The overall movie stays true to the real-life story of the battle of Thermopylae and even has minor details depicted accurately, but it also leaves out major parts of the story. This contradiction of historical accuracy is the main reason for critics to give the movie a thumbs down. However, most of the fiction involved in the movie is pretty obvious and not meant to be taken literally, which, therefore, allows the viewer to enjoy the movie for its visual appeal and not necessarily for its historical teachings. In the end, the opinion of the movie is based on personal preference, but it is still worth mentioning some of the fiction involved in the movie and some of the factual depictions. Before the historical accuracy is discussed, a little information is needed. The movie “300” is an American historical action film made in 2007 and directed by Frank Miller. The movie is based off the graphic novel by the same name and has Gerard Butler in the starring role as the king of the Spartans, King Leonidas. The plot of “300” tells the story of King Leonidas as he leads 300 Spartan warriors in the battle of Thermopylae. The big difference here is that while I was more than willing to give a little leeway to The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones gets no such love. Plain and simple: this movie was terrible. The Direction First and foremost, we need to remember one big thing about the first 3 movies: only one was directed by George Lucas. The other 2 were done by directors Lucas respected (Kershner and Marquand). These movies are 100% Lucas and, in the case of Clones, he elected to direct a movie that was nearly entirely filmed against a green screen. This allowed him to do filming of characters against a blank canvas while allowing him to basically design whatever world he wanted around them. Green screens had long been used for special effects and matte fills, but hadn’t been used this heavily at this time. While Episode II wasn’t a full “digital backlot” film, there were tons and tons of shots that had actors doing their thing with nothing around them but green cloth. The upside here is that digital backlots can save a lot of money in film production since you don’t have to build sets that are either very complicated (aka “expensive”) or utterly impossible. He directed two anti-colonialism in the 1960, when most of the movie-going audience was probably comfortably numb to the plight of the Third World. He created a film genre (anti-colonialism) that while at first controversial would eventually become a mainstream source for modern classics. He was one of the first directors to take on the challenging subjects of terrorism and torture, in an era where the preferred treatment of the historical film was sterilization, not realism. Pontecorvo portrayed women realistically, not as an idealized pieces of scenery. Most important, Pontecorvo achieved the admirable feat of creating films that accurately reflected historical accuracy and cinematic excellence. And he did all this while advancing a political thesis.
