...The Military Changed My Life for the Better Life in the military has not only changed me, but it has molded me to become a better person. Before I joined the United States Navy, I was a member of Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) for my entire tenure of high school; as well as a scholarship recipient to the University of Kentucky. I had always been an intelligent, skillful and easy-going young lady; however JROTC thought me fundamentals of leadership, the importance of teamwork but most important it embedded confidence into myself worth. JROTC was just a minor stepping stone in my life; compared to how becoming a United States Sailor affected my life. One major change the military has had on me is my independence. My Father was a Solider in the Army and I was the youngest of four children. Even though we moved around every two to three years, to include starting new schools and making new friends; I always had my siblings no matter what state or house we lived in. There was never a sense of loneness or fear, I always had someone by my side in every endeavor. Initially, the military also provided me with that domestic feeling; until I was walked to medical, with no one by my side and I realized I was alone for the first time in my life. ...Abstract There are approximately three million people serving in the Armed Forces, and there are about 1.8 million children that are part of military families. With over a decade in war, multiple and prolonged absences of the military parent have taken a toll on the military youth. With deployments and Temporary Duty (TDY) separations have become a way of life for these families. Although it may seem they are accustomed to these separations, recent studies have found increased emotional and behavioral difficulties associated to the military deployment cycle for youth of all ages. Adolescents, who are naturally going through a period of marked changes in their lives, and as they are trying to find their identity and learn to be independent, parental separation due to the military can impact their development. This paper includes research and a literature review on adolescents and the military life, how being part of a military family affects their social, emotional, cognitive and physical development, as well as the findings from an informational interview with a School Counselor. We have actually been doing some real training but it’s just the basics. Tomorrow (Monday) we get to go through the gas chamber though! So we will see how that goes. From what I hear you stand in there with your mask on, and then you have to take it off for about thirty seconds before you can exit the room. I guess people tend to pass out and throw up everywhere. So it could be some fun! I wish we could do some more repelling or shooting, but that’s not for a couple weeks. I just want to be out of this stupid place and get my phone and everything back. But I just have to be tough for a few more weeks and then it will all pay off. Guess what? I tried to steal a piece of pie in the dining hall at dinner because I wanted something sweet, but I got caught. So now I get no pie at all. They are so strict on what you can eat, you can’t even but Gatorades out of the vending machines. It’s so lame! And as soon as I get off the shuttle to the airport I am buying some candy and a coke.
