...What’s wrong with school systems today? What is wrong with the school systems these days? In the book Friday Night Lights it says “It’s just a part of our lives. It’s just something that you’re involved in. it’s just like going to church or something like that.” Is it talking about the presents of drugs? Is it talking about all the alcohol that is consumed by high school students? Or is it the fact that they spend all of their time chasing after someone? Nope, it’s talking about sports. Sports in most public high school allow most kids to just slid by with their grades. I asked my boss at work once, how his school treated sports players. He answered “well I played both football and baseball so I didn’t have to do crap in school they just let my slid by with the easiest class.” He also added that “even if you were failing a class if you were valuable to the team the coach would call your teacher and tell her to give you a D for right now so you could play.” If you ask me that is kind of messed up like in the section of the book They Say I Say, by Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein. The authors state “what happened to personal responsibility” this it talking about why do people take responsibility for their own actions and that is so true. If you do this then what are you teaching these kids? Are you teaching them to work hard for their grades or are you teaching them to just be good in one category in their lives? If you think you are actually going to go pro here are so...

.... Bullying is a major problem in schools today. Many states have made laws designed to protect students from being bullied and enabling them to punish students who are guilty of bullying their peers. Different schools have implemented different anti-bullying programs in order to stop bullying within their schools. There is a great deal of debate as to which of these programs are effective and which are ineffective and how to truly measure effectiveness. The Steps to Respect Bully Intervention program and the Safe School Ambassador Program are among the many programs that schools currently use to address the bullying epidemic. Steps to Respect Bully Intervention Program is a school-based bully prevention program developed for grades 3-6. The goal of the program is to decrease school bullying problems by increasing staff awareness and responsiveness, fostering socially responsible beliefs, and teaching social-emotional skills to counter bullying and promote healthy relationships. The program aims to promote skills associated with general social competence. The program consists of 3 main components. The first component is a school-wide program guide which provides an overview of the curriculum content, the goals of the program, the research foundations behind the program, and a blueprint for developing school-wide policy and procedure. The second component of the program is staff training which focuses on effective discipline policies, improved monitoring of students...

In Ancient Athens, only the boys were allowed to attend school and at least received an elementary education. Pottery shards called ostraka, bearing the names of individuals to be exiled from the city, attest to basic literacy among Athenian citizens. They were taught gymnastics and physical fitness in wrestling school called palaistra for their preparation for war. Music was also a part of their education which consisted of lyric poetry and lyre playing. Music was included in both poetry and dance, with a strong emphasis on performance. ...time between 1790 and 1890 and regards many different issues that helped shaped education to mold it into what education is today. In the time period that this video focuses on the only places that were required to build schools were large towns, if you did not live in a large town then your options were private schools which cost money unlike the schools in the towns. There were certain schools in the years between 1790 and 1890, such as the Dame School and The New England Primer and Grammar School that were concentrated on in the Common School video. Although the Dame School was treated as a school it was actually what today would be considered a daycare. Parents that sent their youngest child to the Dame School...

...Children Tamiko Henry Emilie Babcox English 090 September 4, 2012 Children today are harder to parent than they were years ago. Many children have the “me” syndrome. They are born to many young mothers who have little experience in raising a child. Many of the children today go through problems in transition, have babies early, and drop out of school. In the Bible you hear, “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Children today have problems transitioning from something familiar to the unknown. They all start off in daycare or preschool learning the basics of school life. They learn to interact with other children, how to count and say the ABC’s. In early education, children learn to bond with their teachers. Half of a day they are there with someone who cares for them as their parents. Once the time comes for the child to move on, it takes time for the child to transition from one place to another. Take my children for example; all of my children have attended the same preschool. When the time came for them to enter school, I had to have the director from the daycare go to the school with us to assure the children that they would be fine. Children take time to adapt to new environments and to build a relationship with teachers and peers. Second, many children are having babies at early ages and do not understand the circumstances of their actions. Children are taught to protect themselves and to value life. At...

..."Banning Junk Food Isn't the Answer to Curbing Obesity." USA TODAY 13 Aug. 2007. Academic Search Complete. Web. 26 Oct. 2010. According to the article, “Banning junk food isn’t the answer to curbing obesity,” in USA TODAY, banning junk food on school campus isn’t what needs to be done. The article states that in fact a ban of junk food in school will only escalate the problem even more than actually decreasing it. The magazine states, “studies show that when placed in environments that outlaw "bad" foods, children develop obsessions with these forbidden foods and then binge on them.” (USA TODAY) Meaning that if a ban was placed into action that kids would actually go out of their way to eat a lot of junk food at one time before or after school hours. So to ban junk food from school’s would not be the answer to decreasing the obesity in the youth today. USA Today suggests that instead of just banning junk food, “We should be showing students that any food can be enjoyed in moderation.”(USA TODAY) Now the magazine does show that there are some school districts that have changed the food selections for the better. Such as taking white rice and replacing it with brown, or buying whole grain breads, using multigrain pasta, and placing a variety of fruits and vegetables to purchase. Some districts have even implemented programs that promote a certain vegetable and fruit sold in certain months with the addition of encouraged physical activity. Other suggestions were made as well...

...they would clean the house and on Sundays they would go to church. I’m pretty sure every parent has said something about their childhood to their children as a lesson for the child to learn. Child behavior today is worse than it was 20 years ago or back in the day. One reason supporting my opinion statement is new technology and social media. I feel like the new technologies today are devastating the new generation of children. 76% of students say that they use social media 2 hours a day (Hatch 26). In 1996, 70% of parents purchased educational software for children (NAEYC 3). All of the different computers and social medias today weren’t even thought of back in the day....

...This year has had a big impact on me for a variety of reasons. School being one of the reasons, but also everything that has been happening in society and the world today. Today’s generation and our society today has changed drastically from what it used to be years ago. Our kids today are being affected by our world the most, because a lot of what happens, happens to our kids, or in the schools the kids go to. This year, 2018, there has been 22 school shootings since January, and tons of bullying complaints, or incidents with children killing themselves. Violence and hate has always been around, but in our world today, it has gotten much worse. Us kids and teens in school, have to suffer the bullying and violence of school shootings, and...

...to pay for private school education, in this July 5, 2007 speech. Obama's remarks included a number of controversial proposals, including immediate, across-the-board pay raises for teachers, and redesign of standardized tests to support learning, not punishment of teachers. While Obama proposed to fix the many substantial problems of the No Child Left behind Act, he also slammed its shortcomings, and remarked, don't tell us that the only way to teach a child is to spend too much of the year preparing him to fill in a few bubbles on a standardized test. Over the last few years, I've been traveling to different schools and meeting with all kinds of educators to hear about what's working, what's not, what makes the difference when it comes to educating children today. I've gained a lot of valuable insight from these visits, but one I'll always remember is my trip to Dodge Elementary School in my hometown of Chicago. I was talking to one of the young teachers there about the challenges they faced, and she mentioned what she called the "These Kids Syndrome". The willingness of society to find a million excuses for why "these kids" can't learn. It's the idea that "these kids come from tough backgrounds" or that "these kids are too far behind." And after a while, "these kids" become somebody else's problem. Then she said to me, "When I hear that term, it drives me nuts. They're not 'these kids.' They're our kids. Our kids are why all of you are in this room today. Our kids are why...

Anxiety has been affecting students for the past decades. Today more students are experiencing more home and family issues and it has not been helping when schools throughout the years have been more challenging. The Atlantic states, “Schools are more challenging, the stakes are higher, and pressure is alive and well.” Today in schools there is a lot more information because of the upswing in technology. Students become more stressed because of the high-performance expectations today in schools and sports today. Students stress over getting the right grade, especially in high school when students are competing to be in a top-tier college or university.
