...Don't discard banana peels; they are valuable as plant fertilizer. Bananas are packed with nutrients, and that includes their peels. Though you won't want to eat them yourself, your plants benefit from the nutrients as the peels decay. Plants need nutrients need to thrive. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium are required in the highest amounts, and nutrients such as calcium, manganese, sodium and sulfur are necessary in lower amounts. While various levels of these nutrients occur naturally, some soils can use a boost. Adding banana peels around prized plants is a widespread gardening practice that can improve your soil. This essay presents the genre of disaster rhetoric as a viable strategy to address the problems and opportunities that arise when the media write about crisis anniversaries or news stories that refer to any crisis or disaster, past or present. After a brief review of genre theory, the authors outline the seven functions of the “rhetoric of disaster” and provide multiple examples of their application to public relations activity and its news coverage. The essay concludes with questions that practitioners may use proactively in the development of copy points to address each of the rhetoric of disaster’s functions. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Sids

...the number of children who die of pneumonia, child abuse, AIDS, cancer, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy combined (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2007). Even though SIDS is not predictable or 100% preventable, there are prevention tips, guidance, and support for those that have been affected by this tragedy. The tragic loss of a child to SIDS weighs heavily on the minds of all parents. One thought that offers a little comfort to parents who have suffered such a loss is that there appears to be no suffering. In most SIDS cases, death occurs rapidly and during sleep. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), “SIDS is the prevalent cause of death during the first year of life with a rate of roughly two per every thousand births.” SIDS could possibly have more than one cause, though the final process appears to be associated in the majority of cases. Though it is unknown what causes SIDS, it is known what SIDS is not. SIDS is not contagious or caused by suffocation, or entrapment. Slight illnesses such as infections and colds, choking or vomiting are also not causes of SIDS. Research has shown that diphtheria, pertussus, and tetanus (DPT) vaccines, or further immunizations do not cause SIDS (Walker et al., 1987). Having a child properly immunized will help maintain the health of an...

Ann Taylor: Survival in Specialty Retail

...The CASE Journal Volume 5, Issue 2 (Spring 2009) Ann Taylor: Survival in Specialty Retail Pauline Assenza Manhattanville College Alan B. Eisner Lubin School of Business, Pace University Jerome C. Kuperman Minnesota State University Moorhead In the summer of 2008, headlines announced that the declining economy was generating a “wave of retail closures” among many well-known companies, including Home Depot, Pier 1 Imports, Zales, Gap, Talbots, Lane Bryant, and Ann Taylor. The Chief Executive of J.C. Penney’s called the 2008 situation “the most unpredictable environment in his 39-year retail career”. i One industry group forecasted that nearly 6,000 retail stores would close in 2008, a 25 percent increase from the previous year. A representative from the National Retail Federation (NRF) suggested that these businesses should “look at where they’re underperforming and how can they change their operations so that they have a little bit more power in another area, or a little bit more growth potential.” ii Kay Krill, President and CEO of Ann Taylor Stores Corporation (ANN), was already considering this advice. Krill had been appointed President of ANN in late 2004, and succeeded to President/CEO in late 2005 when J. Patrick Spainhour retired after eight years as CEO. At that time, there had been concern among commentators and customers that the Ann Taylor look was getting “stodgy”, and the question was how to “reestablish Ann Taylor as the preeminent brand...

Halo Effect

...was coined by psychologist Edward Thorndike in 1920 to describe the way commanding officers rated their soldiers. He found that officers usually judged their men as being either good or bad "right across the board. There was little mixing of traits; few people were said to be good in one respect but bad in another."* The old saying that first impressions make lasting impressions is at the heart of the halo effect. If a soldier made a good (or bad) first impression on his commanding officer, that impression would influence the officer's judgment of future behavior. It is very unlikely that given a group of soldiers every one of them would be totally good or totally bad at everything, but the evaluations seemed to indicate that this was the case. More likely, however, the earlier perceptions either positively or negatively affected those later perceptions and...
