Managing the flow of traffic in the classroom is just as important as selecting the needed materials. I have been working in a preschool classroom as an aide since 2009, and this was the first year I was able to give input on placement of the furniture in the classroom. During the summer, I provided the teacher with a general layout of the furniture and the reasoning for the placement of the centers, desks and other furniture. The classroom is free from clutter, the centers are grouped together by active and quiet areas, and the children are provided with a wide variety of toys, manipulatives, books and puzzles. Each center is labeled and the children are assigned a particular center and rotate throughout the centers during the week. Actually, not only are the centers labeled by area but the furniture is labeled with words to help with word recognition. Although this video did not provide me with any new information; it did confirm that the classroom is properly setup to manage the traffic flow.
