It’s the first day on your new job. You’re a 33-year-old woman who has just been hired on as the CEO of one of the largest companies in the United States. It’s been your dream since the eighth grade. You sit down at your new shiny desk and spot the old CEO’s payment records still tucked neatly into the desk. Peeking out of curiosity, you realize that he was paid over sixty-two thousand dollars a month, while you are paid just fifty-five thousand a month. Equal pay between men and women in the United States has been a long debated topic for many years. There are people who believe that the wage gap is huge and that it requires change, and others believe that it isn’t a true problem and that it doesn’t need to be changed. Personally, I believe that the wage gap is there, but it …show more content…
Is the gap there due to the fact that women are choosing lower paying jobs than men? Is it because men are typically part of more perilous jobs than women? Or is the gap simply there due to some sort of hidden sexist agenda? The answer is unclear, but according to many, the wage gap is simply due to the fact that there is unfortunately still a difference between women and men. Typically, women and men receive a different annual salary, despite having equal amount of education. For example, say a man with an advanced degree in engineering earns around two thousand dollars every week, while a woman with the same amount of education in the same subject receives just one-thousand eight-hundred dollars a week. So this poses the question: Why are women paid less than men? Well, it is a fact that men are typically working more perilous jobs than women, but that difference is slowly being equalised in modern day.
