...the game just to escape from the stress of their everyday lives. But, by 1842, the innocent game took a turn when, “…nine prosperous businessmen and lawyers banded together to form the exclusive New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club. These men were dedicated to turning the sport into a “gentleman's” activity” (Baseball: American Eras). So how did such an innocuous game turn into an exclusive sport? By analyzing the baseball culture, one can see that the preconception towards white males has a big contribution to the...

As a result of this, I believe that Watson is correct with regards to whether or not "sex work" is true work. She takes a unique route on prostitution by building on the Nordic model through the lens of worker safety, sexual harassment, and civil rights. Watson states in "Why Sex Work isn't Work" that no one chooses the occupation of prostitution. Instead, one is forced into the selling of their body for money due to poverty, homelessness, drug abuse, or mental health issues. I will...

...com/). The Snuggie epidemic is definitely contagious, myself admitting that I even own one. Infomercials have been around for decades, but the Snuggie was definitely a game-changer in that world. From the many commercials that give most of us a few laughs, to seeing almost every living room with a Snuggie draped over their couch or recliner. It's safe to say that the Snuggie is one of the most successful infomercials today, acquiring around $400 million dollars in sales and ranking number 8 on the best seller list. The backwards robe does an amazing job in the commercial for advertisement, showing you that you can go anywhere in your Snuggie and you're able to keep your arms warm and functional, but is it really that necessary of a product? I believe that the goofiness of the infomercial is part of what has made it so successful. The product itself is silly as well, which makes it more memorable than the Slap-Chop or the Ove Glove. The infomercial still uses logos in knowing that it is soft fleece, and does have a reasonable refund date along with a reasonable price. While watching the commercial over again on the internet, I almost feel like they take it too far and it ends up just being cheesy. It seems very outdated, even though it isn't more than 10 years old. The actors in the commercial aren't very convincing, but these reasons might be why the Snuggie infomercial is definitely a memorable one. As sad is it may be, this product is a perfect for targeting us U.S. citizens. Other...

...Lantana is a very invasive, poisonous species of plant that spreads very quickly. The scientific name for lantana is Lantana camara. Lantana originated from South America, Central America and Mexico, and was first introduced to Australia in 1841 in the Adelaide Botanic Gardens being brought to Australia as an ornamental plant. It quickly spread and became one of Australia’s worst weeds and a weed of national significance. This is why it is now illegal in all states and territories of Australia to buy or sell any variety of lantana. Although it was introduced for use as a fence for cattle because it could grow up to 5 metres, it failed because if cattle ate it they would die because lantana is poisonous to cows. According to research from the...

...describe this image. The model is statuesque, poised, and serene. The advertisement captivates its audience by inviting it to buy into the idea of the Valentino woman and everything this role entails. If we desire to become this woman what is our role in society and how does a medium such as a magazine manage to create this appealing world? In today’s capitalist society it seems everything is trying to sell you a hyper reality, a brief moment in which you can become something else or live vicariously through somebody else. And yet while we want it we don’t think about how it is created. The advertisement is no fluke; millions of dollars are spent to achieve the perfect model, clothing, light, even the placement of the logo. Finally by analyzing this image it is not only the composition of the advertisement, but the impact it has on its readers. It is this incredible insight into the societal roles, class, and insecurities that sell this brand to the everyday consumer; and in return this brand sells the audience an identity. Media has become a vital tool for companies because of its incredible ability to persuade its audience. The various components of the advertisement play on what Aristotle coined as the three main tools of persuasion “ethos- our perception of something (do we respect it ect...), pathos-our emotional connection to something despite its intangible state, and logos- our logical inductions and deductions in reasoning” (2). The advertisement is striking and complex...

...people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.” Our Founding Fathers believed that governments are prone to use soldiers to oppress the people. History had suggested that this risk could be controlled by permitting the government to raise armies (consisting of full-time paid troops) only when needed to fight foreign enemies. “We established however some, although not all its (self-government) important principles. The constitutions of most of our states assert, that all power is inherent in the people; that they exercise it by themselves, in all cases to which they think themselves competent; (as in electing their functionaries executive and legislative, and deciding by a jury of themselves, in all judiciary cases in which any fact is involved,) or may they act by representatives, freely and equally chosen that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed” (Jefferson). Gun control has been a highly controversial issue for decades. A vast majority of Americans believe that if gun control is strictly enforced it would quickly reduce the threat of crime. Many innocent people feel they have the right to bear arms for protection, or even just the pleasure of recreational sports, such as hunting. Americans have a constitutional right to own hand guns. Although, stricter laws and licensing may not affectively abolish crime, it will help to make it more challenging for anyone to purchase fire arms. Currently the federal law states the following: The use of any firearm in...

...Case Discussion Questions 1. Should Nike be held responsible for working conditions in foreign factories that it does not own, but where subcontractors make products for Nike? Some people probably think that designing and marketing its products is what Nike is responsible for. But outsourcing its manufacturing divisions into foreign countries doesn´t release Nike from the responsibility. During a developing process manufacturing is one of the most important intermediate steps and because of that it belongs to Nike´s responsibilities, no matter if they own the manufacturer or not. Everybody knows that it is hard to keep the overview about every developing stage but if you decide to put this step into a foreign country, you have to find a way of taking the control. So yes, Nike should be held responsible for working conditions in foreign factories that it does not own, but of course you have to weigh how much influence a company like Nike can have regarding working conditions. Establishing an independent monitoring association like the “Fair Labor Association” (FLA) is a good way to improve bad labor standards. 2. What labor standards regarding safety, working conditions, overtime, and the like, should Nike hold foreign factories to: those prevailing in that country or those prevailing in the United States? In the article you can read that labor standards in the US and in foreign countries are very different. Everybody knows that minimum wages and working conditions...
