...Jessy Lopez May 12, 2014 The Golden Poppy The California poppy (Eschscholzia Californica) is a beautiful orange-golden flower well known in California not just by being common in our gardens but by being the state’s flower. Eschscholzia Californica is known by many names; La Amapola, the flame flower, and the golden puppy. In the past the golden puppy was valued by Native Americans for its oils, food source, and medical use. Even today it is a great importance in medicine by relieving stress and a great remedy to calm insomnia. The Eschscholzia Californica belongs in the kingdom Plantae, it is in the order Ranunculales, family Papaveraceae, genus Eschscholzia, and species Californica. It has a perigynous anatomy of the ovary and the sepals cover the bud except when it flowers. It has 2 functional carpels with 2 rudimentary ones, 4 stamens, 2 fused sepals located above the receptacle surrounding the bud, and has alternating branching blue-green foliage leaves. It does reproduction by seed dispersion. It has C3 photosynthesis meaning that it requires optimally 12 hours of sunlight to grow properly. The golden poppy is a plant that is: herbaceous, a basal dicot, drought tolerating, annual that grows from 5-60 inches tall, has intermediate flowering, and closes its petals at night and at cloudy nights. Its flowers are actinomorphic and exhibit radial symmetry (California Academy, 2007). The golden poppy is related to buttercups and mustard families. It is different from...

...The number one hit album in America eight weeks in early 1977 . “California Hotel” is a song produced by the Eagles, in the 1970's. Similar to many other songs and articles, “California Hotel” talks about the lifestyle these artists encountered after settling in California. To many people, living in California was a dream. In “Golden State, Golden Youth” Kirse Granat May states,“To those who followed the rush to gold, California remained unique: a place to regain health, live on the frontier, build a railroad, exploit agricultural possibilities, discover oil, or make fortunes in real estate. For newcomers, it was still the land of the second chance, glowing with opportunity amidst sunshine.” The Eagles were a band that moved to california to pursue their dreams, just like millions of people across the world. These artists heard many rumors about the endless money, women, and fame thats awaiting for them in the golden state, so they took their chances. Unlike many people which moved to california, their dreams of money and fame came true. But what they didn't know is that everything comes with a price. The lifestyle that came with that much fame and money, was a life style that had no true love, only meaningless sex, drug abuse, and an unethical life. After these artists discovered the true life of a Californian star, they wished they have never came; they tried to escape the life they were living but it was too late and they couldn't. The introduction of this song was very detailed...

...Daniel McClure California Culture October 1, 2014 California Sunshine and Noir California, the Golden State, where the sun is always shining, the waves are always crashing, and dreams are coming true. Right? Well, not exactly. It hasn’t always been sunshine and smiles for the great state of California. The state has gone through a variety of stages both economically, and politically. Throughout these phases, there have been a fair amount of themes that have helped build the foundation of California culture. Of course, there is the notion that anyone can move to California and strike it rich. This dream that is still very alive today has contributed in the past and present with massive booms in immigration into California. This popular conception is warm and welcoming, but it does not tell the entire story of California. When looking into the past and understanding how this state came to be, there is a dark and iniquitous aura that suggests that California isn’t really that enchanting, glamorous place that it is made out to be. The California Dream all started in 1848 when discovery of gold sparked a rapid movement known as the California Gold Rush. Word quickly spread when John Marshall first made his discovery in the American River. As Albert L. Hurtado explains in his paper, “Sex, Gender, Culture, and a Great Event: The California Gold Rush, ‘It is impossible to give more than rough estimates for the number of hopeful people who poured into California from 1848 to the...

... California is the final destination for those who seek freedom and success. It is the state where dreams can become fulfilled and anything born from imagination can be physically built. California has spawned plenty of “built environments” in the twentieth and twenty-first century. Many of these environments were responses to things like the automobile craze, tourism, and celebrities. These built environments were constructed with the California Dream as their framework. We discussed many examples of built environments in class but there are three in particular that stood out to me. They are Hollywood, Disneyland, and the suburbs of Orange County. Hollywood was a small city with a post office, hotel, and a couple markets before the film industry took Hollywood by storm in the 1900s. Prior to Hollywood, major film companies were located in New Jersey. Filmmakers ventured to Los Angeles, California to break free from harsh movie producing patents and rules imposed on them by the Edison Motion Picture Company. The beautiful weather and diverse terrain of California were also ideal filming locations. Hollywood is an example of a built environment because filmmakers and producers saw the opportunity for success within the film industry and took advantage of it. The first film shot in Hollywood was titled Old California, and its success encouraged many out-of-state filmmakers to make their way to the golden state. It wasn’t long before Hollywood fully transformed into what we...

...Today, and Tomorrow California has been known as “the Golden State” for many decades thanks to the Gold Rush, the birth of the Golden Gate Bridge, and more than a hundred years of continuously blooming growth. Even so, some say that the state has lost its shine over the years, and to many others the state’s politics seem unpredictable and turbulent. California’s economy has been plugged in recession since 2007 and the state has suffered severe budget deficits for over a decade. Meanwhile political leaders rise and fall unexpectedly, and special interest groups and wealthy leaders are constantly accused of buying the elections on their behalf. However, issues are more likely to be referred to the voters which are often confused among complex and (sometimes) obscure ballot measures. Moreover, some people say democracy has gone mad, and others agree that California is simply ungovernable. As tense and dysfunctional as California politics may appear, it seriously affects us all and it has to be understood by examining the past and present characteristics of the state starting with its constantly changing population and economy. The persistent implementation of new technologies and the never-ending arrival of immigrants, have transformed California’s economy and have made its society more diverse and multicultural. To understand the process of California today, we also have to comprehend the past about the evolution of the challenging interests within the state. Archaeologists believe...

For the past sixteen years, the organization has been unsuccessful in all aspects of the business. Aspects include: forming a competitive team that consistently makes the post season year in and year out, staffing a highly qualified management group, and increasing single & season ticket sales over a three year span. With the goal to build a “winning NBA franchise,” we will first focus on the aspects of improving the culture and employing a new face for the team. With this, it will provide a more attractive setting for “big name” free agents to come join the Warriors and bring them back into a respectable state. With the marketing strategy that I will implement, it will give the Warriors increased amount of leverage against the other 30 NBA organizations by increasing the market share by at least 4.36%. With every available free agent in the market, the Golden State Warriors have a 3.33% chance which does not include the 12 big market teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. Of the 12 big market NBA teams, they share an 8.33% percent chance as a result to the glamour of their team and culture. My...

...INTRODUCTION TO CALIFORNIA POLITICS INTRODUCTION “It's 90 degrees in November, the full glory and perennial curse of Southern California on fierce display. Devil winds, hill-hopping infernos, smoked mansions, torched trailers, barren freeways, and brilliant sunsets lingering in low-hanging canopies of burnt dreams. Are we all crazy? Don't live here, says the wind, the trembling earth, the parched land whose natural inclination is to explode in flame every year about now. But we do. Don't build near the kindling, say the voices of common sense. But we do, for all the wrong reasons and all the known glories. Our winter snowfall is flakes of ash and flame retardant falling on bougainvillea, so it could be worse. The Earth shakes. The fires rage. The population expands. And the sunsets are brilliant, especially this time of year.” -Steve Lopez, columnist for the Los Angeles Times November 17, 2008 “Everyone is welcome. As you know, I'm an immigrant. I came over here as an immigrant. What gave me the opportunities, what made me be able to be here today, is the open arms of Americans. I have been received. I have been adopted to America. I have gotten all the opportunities because of America. I have seen first hand, coming over here, with empty pockets, but full of dreams, full of desire, full of will, to succeed. But with the opportunities that I had available, I could make it. And that's what I want everyone to be able to do. This is why we have to get back and bring California back where...

...The question of the combination of different cultures is an ancient question. This is indicated by many proverbs. For example, people in the Britain used to say, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do." That is how for thousands of years people tried to avoid conflict between different cultures. Modern immigrants in the United States have much better living conditions than in the time of the Roman Empire. That is why they are not reluctant into local society. A constant flow of immigrants from different ethnic cultures has increased dramatically in the 1960s and 1970s. Approving massive immigration was a political decision to increase the population of the country and at the same time improve the economy with the help of cheap labor. The flow of immigrants continues to this days. Poverty and political frictions move millions of immigrants to the United States and other economically developed countries in search of a better life. Assimilation fell behind migration, and immigrants refuse to adapt to a new environment. Hence, cultural diversity in America leads to disunity of population because of clashes in economics, security of the country, and social relationship. Politicians assumed that adopting democratic laws for its multinational citizens, would create a chorus of American society with one common culture, traditions, desires and growing ethnic tensions. The motivation for immigrants was an opportunity to climb the social ladder and own a new international life...

...“Why California is Not a Good Place to do Business” When this country broke away from Great Britain on July 4, 1776 it was from then on known as, “The land of the free and the home of the brave”, but moreover was a place where entrepreneurs could come and make a life for themselves without being oppressed, also known as the ‘American Dream.’ For hundreds of years this country has lived up to the standards of what the ‘American Dream’ conveys, but as we move further into the 21st century the businessman is becoming increasingly more oppressed, especially in California. Since the 90’s, Business’s have deemed California as the least best place to do business and have since started moving out at an increasing rate for a variety of reasons including, rising taxes, litigation costs, and regulations. The rest of this research paper will go through those three main causes of why “California is Not a good Place to do Business,” as well as what effect it has on the people. (And when done reading ask yourself if you would start up a business in California.) Cause: Taxes Its common sense that to improve the health and profitability of a business certain measures must be taken, for instance doing the math on what kind of taxes the business is subject too depending on the state of establishment. According to CalTax.org, “California is the third worst state business tax climate in the nation!” Broken down California has the highest sales tax, gasoline tax, and personal income tax in the...

...California State Route 99 is a highway here in California that is stretched along almost all the central valley. It passes through 15 cities and 8 counties. Route 99 starts at CA-36 near Red Bluff and ends at Interstate 5 junction south of Bakersfield. This Route is also known as the Golden State Highway. Although these basic facts are interesting, one fact about Route 99 I have related to my whole life. Where the Palm meets the Pine is a historical landmark here in California located between Fresno and Madera. Along Route 99, an odd pair of trees reside. A palm tree and a pine tree. Although no one knows how these trees originally came to be, many have assumed they marked the center of California. This assumption was later proven false....

America had a great big gold rush in 1849 where tens of thousands of people headed to Coloma, California to dig for gold in the American River. Some people lucked out and found gold to make them rich, others quit their job to go to the river and returned home with less money then they started. Most miners had tools like a pick, pan, shovel, and a bucket. They also carried around water canteens to satisfy their thirst while they spent all day mining for gold....

...9/25/2013 Religion and Ethnic Diversity The United States of America is one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse countries in the world. Since the colonization of what is now the United State, the U.S. has been open to immigration from people all over the world. People migrated to the United States for many reasons. The Irish migrated to the U.S. in the 1800s to escaped famine, poverty and oppression by the English. Other ethnic groups migrated to escape religious persecution. The Chinese migrated to this country in search of financial The Chinese migrated to the United States in large numbers after gold was discovered in California in 1848. (http://www.cetel.org/timeline) The Chinese flocked to California in hopes of finding their fortunes in the “Land of Golden Mountain.” “By 1870, there were 63,000 Chinese, mostly male, in the United States, nearly all on the West Coast. It is estimated that another 120,000 Chinese entered the United States during the following decade.” (http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/nutr216/ref/nutr216_ref/kittler/asia/kittler_asia.html) Men from China came to California to amass their fortunes then return to their families in China where they would live more financially secure lives with their families. In the 1850s California state legislature passed the first Foreign Miners' Tax Law, levying a $20-per-month tax on each foreigner engaged in mining. As result the Chinese in California began pursuing other means of generating revenue....

...An Undisputable Edge The Indiana Pacers, the Golden State Warriors, and the Denver Nuggets… these three NBA teams all made the playoffs last season. However, so did several other teams, so why mention these three? If we look back at their road to the postseason, these three squads have a significant difference in their win-loss record when compared to all the other teams: when playing at home, their records were far better as compared to when playing on the road. Let’s take a look at the Indiana Pacers. Going into the playoffs, this team was the third seed in the Eastern Conference, a noteworthy achievement. However, when playing on the road, this team was mediocre throughout the season, ending up with a sub-500 record, 19-22 (ESPN). However, this squad seemed to sync and “click” when playing in Indianapolis, recording 30 home wins as opposed to only 11 losses, enabling them to clinch such a high seed in the playoffs. A similar pattern occurred in Golden State, seeded six due to their home record of 28-13, despite a road record of 19-22 (ESPN). The most astonishing team was the Denver Nuggets, who were also the three seed, but in the Western Conference. This squad managed to tally a whopping 38 wins at home to only three losses! With this near-perfect win-loss ratio, you must be questioning how they were not seeded number one. The answer lies in their struggle to achieve similar success while playing as the visiting team: the Nuggets had the same road record as...

...One of the few examples that Brands goes into great detail in is the account of John C. Fremont. Fremont is one of the more interesting figures in the text; he was once an officer who helped secure the current state of California from the Mexicans, but then he turned his attention to turning a profit of his own from the gold rush. Brands goes into vivid detail about each individual and their struggles along their travels across the United States. Brands gives an excellent account about the ship bearing travelers who came to California through either Panama or around South America. He also covers the shipping business and the effect the gold rush had upon it. Although Brands did an excellent job in the detailing the expeditions to California he spent too much time on the Argonauts, it almost felt more of a biography instead of an account of the gold...
