1960'Stimecapsule

...1960’s Time Capsule Kaplan University 1960’s Time Capsule To some people, the 1960’s were the best of times, to others they were the worst. By some the 1960’s were looked at as a period when numerous things went wrong with society. Why did people have such different ideas about the 1960’s? I believe the different ideas came from all of the changes that were witnessed during this era. During the 1960’s, many different changes were made. Some of the changes were made for the good, and some were seen as horrible changes. The people referred to as liberals believed in individual choices and to have greater freedom. The liberals supported things such as the contraceptive pill and abortion. On the other side of the coin were the traditionalists who believed that many of the changes made were bad, and society had broken many boundaries. The traditionalists believed many changes that had taken years to build were now being torn apart. The five things I found in my time capsule were: The hippie movement, the breakdown of the nuclear family, legalization of abortion, homosexuality, and the initiation of the BBC channel. The Hippie Movement The first thing I found in my time capsule that people struggled with in the 1960’s was the hippie movement. People in the 1960’s that dressed different highlighted their lives on “love and people” were labeled as “Hippies”. They were often seen in large groups and could be found at “sit ins” protesting war and wearing peace signs...

English 112 Final Paper

...Show her it is a man’s world Kathy Hernandez ENGL-112-61251 March 19, 2013 Professor: Julie Pal Show her it is a man’s world Show her it is a man's world makes sexism against women of the 1960's. This tie ad creates so much controversy because of the way that this ad was advertised. This ad is important in my opinion because it shows the evolution of women rights. Throughout those years women did not have any right and they were humiliated by men and were only allowed to be at home, to take care of the children, house and husband when he came from work. I am making this analysis to show how this ad uses logos, pathos and ethos to persuade people to buy the product. This ad use Pathos which involves using emotion to influence someone else. Emotional scenes and images are used to grab the men’s attention and often make them feel powerful and strong. This is demonstrated by how the man is sitting in bed, with a straight and firm posture, head held high, arms behind his head, well dressed with the “Van Heusen” tie and with a pleasant look on his face. The emotions that this ad conveys to man is to feel that they are above women and that by using the tie women will keep looking at them like all mighty kings. The woman is kneeling beside the bed, handing him a tray containing his breakfast in bed and she looks up to him with admiration treating him like a king in his castle. All of this just makes the target buyer (men) see that with this tie they will have women on...

John Updike's "A & P"

...John Updike “A & P” We were asked in class to write a short paper after being asked the question, “What is the most intriguing or interesting piece we have read, and why?” My response to this question was John Updike’s “A & P”. “A & P” was not the best or even the most interesting piece that I have read. However, out of all of the stories that I have read for this class, “A & P” left me with the most questions. Some of the questions that I asked myself after reading this story were, “What did Updike want me to get from this story?” The second question I asked myself was, “Was there any symbolism or foreshadowing in the extreme amount of detail that Updike used in this story?” The last question that I wanted to answer was, “Is that it?” Did John Updike really write a story about dress code of a supermarket? Or, did he write this story about the moral dilemma a young clerk faces when he believes his boss was rude to three underdressed girls? John Updike’s “A & P” was first published in 1962. This story took place in a small grocery store. The main character, Sammy, is a young clerk. He is ringing up a lady whom he describes as a “witch”, when three young ladies enter the store wearing nothing but bathing suits. Updike uses great detail in describing the three girls. The first one that he noticed was described as “a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit…”...

Biography on George Carlin

...report on is former American comedian, social critic, actor and author, George Dennis Patrick Carlin. I am going to be exploring Carlin’s stand-up comedy and techniques of performing which he is very famously known for today. Carlin’s work usually consisted of stand-up monologues which included a strong content emphasis on social commentary and language. He was eminent for his personal thoughts on politics and religion, his knowledge on psychology and the English language and also his black comedy. * Early comedy career: Carlin began his career as a conventional comedian and achieved a fair degree of success as a Bill Cosby anecdotist up until the 1960’s when he drastically changed his persona. His routines became a lot more insightful and began to focus on more serious subjects such as the government and politics. In 1960, Carlin formed a duo with fellow comic Jack Burns; they worked together and released an album, called ‘Burns and Carlin at the Playboy Club Tonight.’ ‘Burns and Carlin’ attracted the attention of the legendary Lenny Bruce. Bruce helped Burns and Carlin secure appearances on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar. However the two eventually did split up but Carlin continued to make appearances on the tonight show with Johnny Carson. Carlin continued as a solo stand-up comedian and began to receive a lot of attention from audiences all over due to his very courageous style of comedy. As he aged, Carlin did become more bitter and cynical and once again changed...

...becoming an artist, and Lucy becoming an advocate in stopping the war. The emotional effect is this movie is love, because you see these people falling in love and that makes you want to fall in love, but you also see the war going on and that makes you sad. This movie has a lot of truth in human nature. It shows that war is really going to happen no matter how hard you try and stop it, and that can be sad, but it also shows that you should not give up. This movie shows an amazing example of complexity in human relationships. No matter how much Jude and Lucy love each other they cannot get their relationship to work out even if they want to, it is a complex situation. It shows the social problems that were happening back during that time. The war was happening and people were dying to save their country. Max was a prime example of loss of innocence. Since he dropped out of college so he was picked to go to war, so he went from being a carefree kid to and an adult in possible danger. The film Across the Universe has a unified plot making it a good story. The story has a cause and effect relationship, meaning it goes from one scene to another and the all have meaning. This film has the externally observable truth that not everyone is going to be nice to people around them. There is a war going on in this film where both sides are killing people who are...

Dominican Republic vs. Haiti

...difference. The Dominican Republic and Haiti have a similar economy, environment, and education system, but in reality they are similar to opposite ends. The Dominican Republic and Haiti are both third world countries ranked on the top 100 poorest countries in the world. The Dominican Republic currently holds place 94 being in a sense wealthier than Haiti, who holds place 20 being the poorest country in Western Hemisphere. In 1960 these countries had the same GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita, but, ever since, they’ve manage to increase in opposite ways. The Dominican Republic and Haiti perform the same activities to increase their GDP, but somehow the Dominican Republic has increased unlike Haiti, which has been decreasing since then (Figure 1). The Dominican Republic currently stands at $5,855 GDP per capita which has more than tripled Haiti’s, which stands at $673. (Taylor, 2011) The difference in their economy is not only shown in their GDP, but also in their cities, people, and cars. In the Dominican Republic a person walks on the sidewalk dressed properly, drives a luxurious car in a manageable traffic and earns a fair salary. At the same time, on the other side of the island, the cities look like a giant open air market with...

Textual Analysis

...call it, tomato sauce. On first appearance this text screams sexist as it frames a well dressed woman of the aforementioned era with manicured nails, perfect make up, not a hair out of place, looking suitably surprised by a bottle of tomato sauce. The image is anchored by the words “You mean a woman can open it?” with the word “woman” underlined to suggest that women are the weaker sex and previously unable to open a bottle of sauce without the assistance of a man. (Tremblay & Tremblay, 2012) writes that this ad depicts women as technically unskilled or as sex objects. Within the frame of the advertisement is the ideology of the 1950’s woman, the text which anchors the ad and part of the bottle of sauce. This acts as a slight form of metonymy as part of the bottle represents the whole bottle, or, all the bottles of that particular brand of sauce. At the time this advertisement went to print the Del Monte logo at the top of the bottle was most likely recognised by that general demographic. There is nothing else within the frame of this advert, no husband to suggest this new sauce bottle is for anyone to use and no family in the background suggesting this is for the ‘kept woman’ who takes care of her man. Furthermore, we can’t see her posture but we can assume her posture is straight and confident by what we can see of her head, neck and shoulders. Signifiers in this text include a well dressed white female, a hand gesture, a facial expression, a bottle of sauce and a text which...

Kathryn Stockett's 'The Help'

...The Help has become a very memorable book and film in my collection. Kathryn Stockett’s bestseller novel, The Help takes place in the 1960’s in the midst of the civil rights movement in Jackson, Mississippi. It is a tale of friendship, rivalry, racism, female empowerment and freeing oneself from oppression. This novel tells the story of the “help” in Jackson, Mississippi. It mainly highlights the story of Aibileen and Minny, two African-American women who have worked as maids for white families their entire lives. Then there is Skeeter, who is a fresh out of college white gal who dreams of pursuing a career as a writer. After returning home from college, no explanation is given to her as to why the family’s African-American maid, Constantine...

Impact of Gangs

...Gang Life The term gang (noun) is simply defined as an organized group of criminals. However, the gang sub-culture is more complex. A gang is better defined as a group of adolescents and young adults who are united upon on a common idea/identity, and are often involved in delinquent activities to better their own stature. Gangs usually have a somewhat military like structure, with leaders at the top, lieutenants and sergeants, and soldiers at the bottom. Young children have various reasons for joining street gangs, but do not realize the ramifications caused by the gang life. Children often believe joining a neighborhood gang will make them become recognized, or safer, but the harsh reality is that so many youths don’t realize the hazards associated with gangs until it is too late. The history of street gangs in America dates back to the formation of America herself. The first gang-like groups formed in the Northeast right after the Revolutionary war ended, in 1783, in New York City. These groups were mainly young white immigrants from Europe who just fought over turf in the city. In the Midwest region (mainly Chicago) the first street gangs developed in the 1860s and were mainly white immigrants from Ireland, Germany, and Lithuania. In the most western region of the United States Mexican gang-like groups started appearing in Los Angeles sometime around 1890s. Gang-like groups have been around America for quite some time but a few key events escalated gang presence in the...

To Kill a Mockingbird

...To Kill a Mockingbird, by Nelle Haper Lee was published in 1960, after the 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education and during a time of increasing civil rights unrest (Johnson). It was also a time of great social change in the United States, and a novel about the racial injustices of 1930s Alabama carried a powerful message to its readers. After the Brown v. Board of Education ruling, literature and literacy were used to expose and educate on racial injustice (Prendergrast 2). The dominant theme of the novel is prejudice and ultimately the courage needed to overcome prejudice. There are three main types of prejudice that are explored in the novel; racial prejudice, social prejudice and fear of the unknown. Racial prejudice is present throughout the novel in the people of Maycomb’s everyday life, as it is a novel set in the ‘deep south’ of America in the 1930’s. This period is not so long after the American civil war, so slavery’s abolishment had occurred not all that long ago, and the horror of slavery was still on the mind of many black people at the time (Brundage 86). Because of this, most people’s attitudes towards black people had not changed very much. The situation that shows the best examples of racial prejudice is the trial of Tom Robinson. In his trial, Tom Robinson is misjudged and mistreated because he is black. One of the clearest examples of this is the way in which Mr. Gilmer, Tom’s prosecutor, calls Tom “boy.” He uses a tone of voice towards...

Chink Persuasive Speech

...In the 1930s, the good people of Pekin, Ill., decided they needed a mascot for their high school sports teams. Pekin was named for Peking (now Beijing), China, so they gave their teams a related nickname: the Chinks . At the start of every basketball game, a Chink and Chinklette — that is, a boy and girl dressed in Chinese attire — would walk into the center of the court and bow. As the start of the NFL season draws near, I’ve got a question for you: How is the Chink any worse than the Redskin, the feather-clad mascot of Washington’s pro football franchise? It isn’t. The only difference is that the Redskin purports to be American Indian, not Chinese. And unlike any other ethnic group, Native Americans remain fair game for bigotry on game day....

Othello

...related text of your own choosing? One’s initial identity is significantly nurtured by family ideals and beliefs in conjunction with the sheltered environment in which they are raised. However, we are all apt to be considerably shaped by society’s social and cultural influences. Consequently, our identities are a comprehensive construct of society’s values and one’s ethnic background in addition to our occupational duties and interactions with others. In Shakespeare’s ‘Othello,’ and the film, “To Sir with Love,” the identities of the key characters are shown to be a constitute of such circumstances with a particular focus on the influence of relationships. In Shakespeare’s ‘Othello,’ the discriminative attitude of Venetian society towards people of black ethnicity is presented as a significant influential factor in the shaping of Othello’s identity. This is explored through the use language in which Othello is repeatedly referred to as the “Moor” and by the derogatory terms “thick-lips” and a “Barbary horse.” Othello’s black exterior denotes to his position as a ‘outsider’ and therefore his marriage to Desdemona, a white woman is considered unfathomable, “If she in chains of magic were not bound, whether a maid so tender, fair and happy, so opposite to marriage that she shunn’d,” Contrastingly, Othello’s elevated status in Venetian society, reflected in his high naval position, forms an identity that is greatly respected, so much so that not even the accusations of Brabantio affect...

60's Gender Roles

...minorities and females, can’t help but wonder why it has gained so much popularity. There is no better time than now for those oppressed from all groups. It’s disconcerting that many reminisce about the 1960’s, idealizing it to the fullest, although the past is no ideal time for women. The hit TV show “Mad Men”, particularly season 2: episode 6, criticizes the gender relations of the 60’s, demonstrating that traditional roles are not worth keeping, and especially not for a woman’s sake, though some of the show's representation of the 60’s are critiqued to be idealized and flawed. Review

...Review Of the Movie “The Help” “The Help”, it is a movie based on the book which contain testimonials on the experiences of African-American maids. I remembered I read the book before I watched the movie. The thing I know about the book, it was written and published by a white woman and it was told by the black women who were maids in the 1960s. It gave me some assumptions to go with. Before I start, everything that I will bring up are tightly about the movie and the book. It is like a little summary however the reviews I read are really good concerning the movie and the book. The movie was produced in a small town Jackson, Mississippi. Racial tension was so high at that time. The Black women worked not only as maids in that town, but they practically raised white people’s children too. So far, they were seen as “HELP” and were treated inappropriately and poorly. Skeeter, is a young woman who were living in that town. She gets the idea to write a story about these women who were maids, because of her good experience with the black woman who raised her and took really good care of her when her mother was not around. I really liked and enjoyed this movie. It got my attention and made me cry couple of times while watching some parts. What was so interesting and good about this movie? At the beginning of the movie, the acting was excellent. Viola Davis who played a maid named (Aibileen), she is an amazing woman who was one of the central characters in the movie...
