...The title of my research paper will be Modern racism. I choose this topic because of as an American that was born in Africa it is always something that has been an interest to me. I came to America around the age of seven. I was young, and coming from Nigeria we were not taught anything about racism. My views on racism in America didn't really come from studying the history of slavery and civil rights in America, but rather from personal experiences I went through. In elementary school even though I was taught the history of African American I never really understood the impact of slavery. I merely took what I was taught as part of the curriculum, which I needed to pass a test. I never really absorbed much from learning. Most of the racist...

...Introduction How did I get here? Good question. My own personal journey into child care has been straight forward. I have only worked in two centers in all my 24+ years in the field, in an in-home family center and in a non-profit NAEYC accredited center. Even though, I don’t have a personal philosophy regarding ECE I am hopeful that by receiving my BA in Child Development, I will have a better understanding of what I want my philosophy to be, how to use what I will learn to help issues surrounding ECE and to become a better teacher overall. How I “got into” ECE I had received my first introduction into ECE was when I was in High School, I believe I was around 15 years old. I had gone to an in-home child care center growing...

...Jack Fischer Comp 1 Jason Tillis April 19, 2013 Breakfast Club The plot follows five students at Shermer High School in Shermer, Illinois as they report for Saturday detention. (Fun fact about the high school where the movie was filmed, its called Maine North High School, it is a public four-year high school located in Northbrook, Illinois, that’s the high school my father attended for all four years of schooling). The five teens that show up for Saturday detention are all different in many ways. The first, of the teens is Bender a trouble making punk rock kid who likes to give everyone a hard time. The second is Andrew a wrestler jock who doesn’t like to take crap from anyone. Third, is Brian a nerdy kid just trying to fit in with the rest of the group. Fourth, is Claire the popular rich princess that has to have her way and puts herself on a pedestal. Lastly, is Allison the weird girl who doesn’t talk much. They all think they are totally different and in completely different social groups, and at the start of the movie they are right. Bender the troublemaker is messing with everyone including the principle and all the kids don’t understand why he is doing this. All the kids seem to start to get over the fact that Bender will be doing this the whole time. The movie starts to progress when they seek out of the library and are disobeying Mr. Vernon’s rules. All the kids have there fun, but when the movie really starts to get down to its true purpose...

...have racial discriminations, hate crimes or gangs. We don’t have the cultural day parades or blocks of neighborhoods that represent certain racial affiliations. We do not have the daily fights that some neighborhoods go through on a regular basis, striving for equality. Why? My community is overwhelmingly white. A person would have to struggle to find the minorities in my town. Is that a blessing for our community or a setback? While others are learning how to get along with each other, we need to learn how to open the doors and our minds to welcoming others into our community. If you were to drive into the community in which I live, you would think you are driving into a fairytale. The entrance to our town is just like arriving in Mayberry. The streets are lined with old oak trees and the generation old homes are a picture of perfection with their manicured lawns and porch swings. In my hometown people really do sit outside and wave at you as you drive by. Women sit together sipping sweet tea while the men gather in the garage chatting about golf or the tools they have accumulated. People stroll along the sidewalks around town square shopping and chatting at the local coffee shops. Neighborhoods throw block parties, kids play outside with each other and it is true as with any small community, they know everything about everyone. Sounds like a fairytale, I know. Growing up here was a dream. It was the best childhood anyone could ask for. Considering I was adopted and had a quite...

...Introduction A.Literature Review 1. Research Abroad Carson McCullers is one of the most brilliant writer in 20th century America. In 1939, she finished her first novel, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. It is this novel that launched a 22 years old girl to fame. As early as the 1940s, the western literary world began the criticism about Carson McCullers and her works. At that time, a large majority of the researches used the method of New Criticism. Through a close reading of the texts, they tried to analyze the internal structure and the poetic character of her works. Those new critics did not pay attention to the connection between the novel and the personal experience of the author. And they did not find the profound social significance behind...

...Anisa Ellis-Smith Ms. Rochman English 12 January 2, 2013 Forever: An Overly Sexual Abomination or Coming of Age Novel? The first amendment of the Constitution has given every American citizen the right practice freedom of speech. Yet and still, it seems that literary censorship, which is “the act of changing or suppressing speech or writing that is considered subversive of the common good,” (Merriam-Webster, 2012) has been more prevalent in the past 100 years than ever before. People all around the country have been affected by the parameters of censorship. Author Judy Blume once said when asked her opinion about it the topic, “It’s not just the books under fire now that worry me. It is the books that will never be written. The books that will never be read. And all due to the fear of censorship. As always, young readers will be the real losers.” (NMSU Library, n.d.). Blume, herself, is no stranger to censorship. Several of her writings have made ALA’s list of 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books. Her 1975 novel Forever was both challenged and banned in over 10 different states because of its descriptively sexual content, disobedience to parents, “lack of moral tone,” and use of profanity (Censorship & Judy Blume, n.d.). Forever is the story of two high school seniors, Katherine and Michael, and their journey throughout their relationship. The teens meet at a party and fall in love from there. Eventually, Katherine loses her virginity to Michael and they promise each...

...graduation ceremony fulfills an essential human function as a ritual of transition, in this case marking the move from student to worker. The whole idea of graduation is believed to have started in the 12th Century, introduced by scholastic monks who wore robes during the entire graduation ceremony. It has kept on evolving ever since. Gill, L. (2012, January 15). Convocation and its importance. Graduation. Retrieved August 7, 2012. Scholars, especially anthropologists, consider graduation to be a rite of passage. A rite of passage is a ritual that marks a change from one stage of life to the next in a person’s life. The pomp and ceremony of the graduation ceremony can lend itself to accusations of irrelevance and elitism. Such criticisms I think miss the point. The occasion certainly wasn't irrelevant to the students and families who attended on the day. In fact it was laden with meaning. Many had shown remarkable fortitude in seeing through their studies often in the face of competing personal, family and financial circumstances. In a number of cases the students were the first in their families to have attended university. For...

...Empty Vessel: Self-esteem Concerns in young girls Gonzalo Melendez University of Texas in El Paso Abstract This paper will take a look at the different dynamics of the rising the issue of the continued decrease in self-esteem in young girls. This paper will inform you of the age that self-esteem becomes a factor in a young girl’s life. It will also address the multiple causes that affect self-esteem in young girls. It will explain the long-term effects that come with low self-esteem and low self-image. Finally it will highlight ways to help mitigate and prevent low self-esteem in young girls in our society. Intro 12 year old Lana wakes up one morning looks in the mirror and thinks “Ewe why are not pretty.” “I really hate the way my jeans look on me.” “I wish I was smart.” The thought process behind a young girls mind today is a scary one. “Today we define self-esteem as ‘positive or negative attitude toward one’s self’’ and can be viewed as a key indicator of a healthy psychological well-being.” (Daniel Clay, 2005). Self-esteem can be fragile and can be easy shattered. Body image is central to adolescent girls’ self- definition, because others have socialized them to believe that appearance is an important basis for self-evaluation and for evaluation. (Daniel Clay, 2005) Poor self-image is a growing issue among most young girls in today’s society. When you think of poor self-image, most people think immediately of looks, but the truth is poor self-image is also how...

...Eddiana Hernandez MGMT 463-61 Prof. Palmiere Final Paper Affirmative Action: Exploring a Common Ground The term affirmative action was introduced by President Kennedy during the Cold War and around the Civil Rights Movement it was then expanded by President Johnson. Affirmative action programs were created in an attempt to make sure that all groups within a society are given the same opportunity to succeed in the workplace and higher education. It has always been a controversial topic because of the guidelines surrounding it and the alleged double standard it creates since it protects some groups and leaves others out of the “iron umbrella”. Usually Caucasian males are against the action and most of the time demand reform or abolition of such programs. And that is because Caucasian and Asian males are not protected under the act. Affirmative action is one of those programs I believe have a double standard and therefore I have decided to look at it from both perspectives giving it a glance from a compromising way from both opponents and advocates of the act. Over the years it has given people opportunities that otherwise would have not been possible for the person who is part of a minority group but it had also affected the other areas in our society. The issue I have with the act is that is been used as the solely deciding factor to give someone a chance. For example, an African America high school graduate should not be getting into college just for simple fact of being...

...in our lives. What I have learned in this course has helped me learn how diversity can promote more tolerance which in turn helps us to accept other cultures and their specific way of life. The point I am trying to make is that everyone is different because of the culture that they were raised in and that the differences can be helpful in strengthening the society in which we all live. It allows us to learn a new way of life which helps us grow closer to becoming a united society. If we accept and embrace the differences, we can no longer be blind to the reality of life and what is going on around us. I believe that if we use what we learn, it can increase a deeper tolerance which in turn should help decrease racism, prejudice and discrimination. The most important thing we need to do is to stop grouping people. When we place people into a certain group, this causes us to be divided. As long as we remain a nation divided, we will continue to see attacks by one group on another group instead of the solidarity that a united nation can bring. * * Although my race is Caucasian, my ethnicity is Irish/German/Polish. I could not find any information as to my ethnicity so I suppose my ancestors and I are just included as Caucasians. But, just as Hispanics are not just one group, neither are Caucasians. Caucasians are made of many ethnic and cultural backgrounds. These backgrounds do make us diverse and give each ethnic group different beliefs. I do not feel that it...
