...I find three tips that I think it is useful in my own writing are: improve readability, use simple and informal words, and use bias-free language. Improve readability is most useful for me because this is the problem that I need to concern in my writing. When I write something, people sometimes have hard time to figure out what I mean by these sentence or paragraph. The way I organize the sentence and arrange the words usually make the sentence more complicate. Also, the grammar and words error cause people cannot understand what I try to say. The chapter give me some advises such as use grammars check software, and read it over many time to make sure it makes sense when receiver will understand when they read it. ...My Knowledge of Writing My experience with writing is minimal and has been composed of mostly operational and personal levels. I am excited about taking EN105 and expanding upon the writing skills I learned during my military career. Writing has only recently become a favorite subject for me. I attribute to this to my experience with how different people communicate and how each culture has differentiated itself from the others. Communication is important to me, but more important are the subtleties of different dialects and how each society communicates through its own unique rhetoric. I feel as if no one was able to articulate the importance of English during my high school years. This is why I am leaning strongly toward a degree in English. Maybe one day, I can be the individual who helps others like myself understand the importance of English and communicating through writing. For me, the process of learning to write has mostly involved the use of military rules, guidelines, and standards. I have learned that writing in the military is quite different from writing as an EN105 student. The biggest difference between the two is the use of verbiage and rules when writing. This is why, in my previous introduction to the class, I stated that as an EN105 student, I am like a salmon. A salmon will travel a great distance and encounter what seem to be unconquerable obstacles, but in the end, it reaches its goal. I feel that this class will be challenging, and some of my obstacles...

...Composition-Eng 115 Section Number 14 Writing Exercise 1: Pre-Writing/Invention Strategies Gordon’s Pre-Writing Experience My Pre-Writing Experience When writing an essay, it is important to organize your thoughts in a meaningful way. The purpose of the essay is to examine and reflect on the effects and experience of the prewriting strategies that I used for week two discussion board on finding a career. The prewriting strategies discussed in this essay are brainstorming, questioning, and freewriting. I will also explain which strategies were the most effective to me, how they were effective, and why they were effective. I will also include an explanation about which strategy was least effective, and how and why it was ineffective. Prewriting is the first and most important step in the writing process. Prewriting is a technique that is used to gather information and put it on paper about what the writer is going to write about. This technique is used as a guideline to strategically give the writer ideas and to keep the writer focused when writing. When beginning an essay, my first strategy is to jot down all of my thoughts on the topic, brainstorm. By taking a few minutes to record my thoughts, I can determine if I will generate enough thoughts to support the topic. The process was easy and painless because I was able to list my ideas without worrying about spelling, grammar, or connecting my thoughts into complete sentences. When writing, I usually brainstorm my ideas...

...that this class and its assignments have been important tools for improving not only my writing skills but also –and especially—my thinking skills. This class taught me a method for thinking and writing. While looking at the critical research reflection I cannot help but think of the word “reflect? “Since the beginning of this class, I had to reflect on course texts, reflect on the sources, reflect on personal experience, and reflect on peer reviews and discussion posts. Dr. ND asked me to reflect on my writing and to think carefully, especially before making a decision or reaching a conclusion. Why the word "reflect" is so important? What does it mean, "to reflect”? The philosopher Locke said that the act of reflection is characterized by mental acts of doubt, believe, think, have emotions, and feelings (Locke). I believe that my final research paper is an essay that has all the characteristics described by Locke. The final project includes feelings, personal experience, thoughts, doubts, questions, answers, and reasoning....

...difficult decision. There are many factors that can determine the decision to go back to school such as finances, career growth, looking for a better job, or to fulfill personal goals. That made me think about the reasons why I was going back to school. I think for most students, why one would want to return to school is an easy question to answer. After much thought, the important question is not why I was going back to school but how I was going to finish it. I needed to evaluate the reasons why I did not complete school and narrow down the key factors that will make me successful this time around. The variables for academic success are different from student to student, but some of the key factors for all students are goal setting, time management, and academic integrity. Goal Setting Goals are essential to any type of success. Goals serve as a directive and energizing function. It affects the persistence of participants and affects action by leading to arousal and discovery (Locke & Latham, 2002). Goals will keep someone motivated, focused, and provides a sense of direction necessary for academic success. However, simply creating goals will not lead to academic success. During my early academic career, my lack of goal setting led to academic failure. It was difficult for me to achieve my goals without having a clear understanding of what I was trying to achieve. I realized that it would take a reliable process of goal setting to achieve academic success. Using S.M...

...BECOMING A WRITER January of 2011 was the beginning of a special adventure in my life as a student. I took an English class 0890, at Utah Valley University. Now, in the last days of this class, almost four months later, I can look back and see myself with a lot of problems in my writing that needed to be fixed. These four months in this class have helped me solve many writing challenges. I am far from perfect in becoming a good writer but I have learned that hard work and perseverance can produce wonderful results. Even though I learned many things, the three man points that I want to talk about are the following: quote analysis scaffold, grammar, and research online. The first month of the English 0890 class was intense, the students had to do a special analysis writing exercise called “Quote analysis scaffold”. It is the developing of many skills in one exercise. It helps develop reading and vocabulary comprehension. After the quote analysis scaffold is made, it can be used in the essay as a hook or concluding thought. We ended up doing around ten of these exercises. After writing the quote, provided from the teacher, this analysis was made from the following steps: The first thing was to do a research online about the author and make two to three sentences, on average, about who he was and what were his major contributions to society. Second, the students had to look for unknown words and their definition in the dictionary. After this, the third part was for the students...

...argument I choose for why government invasion of personal privacy is wrong. I believe that my arguments were solid and I backed them up with valid evidence. I also felt that my opposing argument was strong. The things that contributed to my achievement were all the assignments that led up to writing the position essay. I took a lot of information from the weekly assignment, ‘Argument, Concession, and Refutation.’ I felt that the PowerPoint provided was very informative, especially when it came to writing the counter argument. One particular detail that stood out to me was presenting an opposing viewpoint for the stand I was taking on privacy invasion. By including an opposing view I gave my paper credibility and showed that I am logical in my thinking....

...For me, writing is frustrating. Many times I have trouble writing about anything. The main reason why I have so much trouble when writing, is because I don't concentrate on my work enough. Even when I try my hardest to concentrate, my mind seems to wonder around to a different direction towards another thought. After that, I forget all about my work and just think about various things such as people, places, and different times I've had in the past. For example, even while I'm writing this small paragraph, my mind keeps on slipping into other thoughts. I dont know if this happens to lots of people, but this is one problem that I have trouble the most in. Maybe this is why I'm a slow writer and don't like to write. When I write, I'm usually in my house sitting right where my computer is. One thing about me is that I hate writing anything with a pen and a paper. Most of the time when writing an essay, report, or anything else, I type it on my computer. I can probably type 50 times faster than writing by hand. I guess it's just something that I'm better at. I can type about 80-85 words per minute. If that isn't fast, then I dont know what is. When writing, I can write when it's quiet, loud, during the day, during the night, and during whatever atmosphere I'm in. Even if the whole house is quiet, I usually listen to music while typing an essay. However, the best time and the best atmosphere for me to write anything would be during...

...Writer • Consider how the writing process you read about in this class differs from the process you have used in the past. What specifically have you done in the past compared to what you have read about this week? In the past I never have really created a Thesis Statement, I did not even know what one really was. I use to just run with my thoughts in my writing, I always felt I explained early in the writing what I was trying to get across. After I learned greater detail of a Thesis I went back to look at my previous papers, and I noticed I never had a thesis, it was more along the lines of a point versus explaining my opinion, but I received a grade for having a proper thesis. Another thing that I picked up on was outlining. This is also completely new to me. I always thought outlining was used to just show major points of topics and sub-topics. I have also played with this a little bit, and I have realized this does make the writing process a lot easier as I am not constantly rereading a topic to look for that important point I want to get across to my audience. In the past I have always knew what I wanted to write about, and knew how I wanted to get it across to the readers. I always thought I was a good writer as previously I have never had a Defense Attorney attack my report in a criminal proceeding; I have never left room for questioning. I learned Police report writing in the Academy, and since then I have made all my writings in that style. • Which...

... I had already taken a 364-level behavioral science class through the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and did well on the writing assignments included in the course work. Because of my success in those previous writing assignments, I was confident that I would not learn a great deal more from an introductory writing course. However, as I reflect back on my experiences from WRTG 101, I am left humbled by the amount of material I was still able to learn from a beginner’s writing course. Not only did the class hone my writing skills further, I also learned how to effectively use UMUC’s library search tool and I improved my critical...

...“Why I write/Difficult reading" Writing. One word, unlimited stories, tales, memories and also; stress. I struggle with both a mental and medical disability. This makes it so much more difficult to do everyday activities let alone something that takes long-term commitment and focus. I struggle very much when it comes to writing, reading and pretty much anything that has to do with concentration. When doing an assignment for class, for example; homework, my severe anxiety kicks in (although I suffer from it 24-7 it hit’s the ceiling when stress is involved.). I have to not only understand the work that has to be done I then have to read, re-read, look up, ask questions, attempt to understand, and re-read as I go to try to answer any questions I later have. I never knew about this column setup before and truthfully I am shocked to find that it does actually help. When reading I used to highlight, underline, keep notes or truthfully skip over words or sentences I couldn't comprehend or just couldn't pronounce. I was very lazy in my younger school years and pretended like certain words, definitions, or sentences were not important and could be skipped or omitted from the readings I was working on. I later found out that I was wrong and it was my downfall in certain assignments. I also struggle from a learning disability that I just recently found out about which also makes it frustrating when it takes hours to do an assignment that takes others minutes to...
