Why We Dream and What Our Dreams Mean There are several theories to why people have the dreams they have. Yet there are no definitive answers to this age old question. One theory is the Evolutionary Theory which states that we dream to practice responses to threatening situations. Cognitive scientist has shown that our amygdala (the fight-or-flight piece of the brain) fires more than normal when we're in REM sleep the time in sleep when we dream. So even though your body is not moving it is practicing the fight or flight response. Another theory is to organize the brain. Everyday our minds are filled with new information both consciously and unconsciously. This theory suggests dreaming is a way to file away key information and discard meaningless data. It helps keep our brains organized and optimizes our learning. There is yet another theory that suggests dreams help to solve problems or cope with trauma. Based on the intensity of our emotions, we will generate dreams to cope with certain situations. Although, scientists generally seem to agree that dreaming is a form of thinking during sleep. I decided to keep track of my dreams over a three week time period so that I could analyze how many times I had a certain dream and to find out what the dreams meant. It is very interesting to see what is going on in my subconscious. I went to dreammoods.com to find out what the meanings were. In one dream I was pregnant with not a human child but puppies. At this site it states that this kind of dream has to do with my anxiety at being a good mother or complications with the birth. This could be true since I am a first time mother and not exactly sure what I am doing. I only had this dream one time. Another dream which I had five times during this timeframe was of me killing someone that plagues me in my daily life. The site suggests that this dream indicates that I am on the verge of losing my temper and self-control or that my dream is expressing some hidden anger or rage. This interpretation is spot on I believe. Judging by the amount of times this dream occurred, it has been a main focus for my subconscious. While yet in another dream I am being chased by someone. This signifies that you are avoiding a situation that you do not think is conquerable. It is some form of insecurity. I had this dream twice during the three weeks. And the last dream that I had was of my husband cheating on me. I had this dream three times. The meaning I found for this one is my fear of being abandoned or I may feel a lack of attention in the relationship. Alternatively, it says I may feel that I am not measuring up to the expectations of others. This notion may stem from issues of trust or self-esteem. The dream could also indicate that I am unconsciously picking up hints and cues that my husband is not being completely truthful or is not fully committed in the relationship. Boy, this could not be truer. Out of the twenty-one days I could only remember my dreams on eleven occasions. Those dreams did seem to be ones that were directly connected to my daily life and things that were affecting me personally. It is amazing to me how connected my conscious and subconscious are. I never realized how much things happening in during the day affected me even in my sleep. Dream analysis is used in several cultures around the world. Such as the Shamans who use dreams to diagnose illness. It is thought that the subconscious brain has an awareness of malfunctions in the body long before the conscious brain. While the ancient Egyptians used dreams to make predictions about the future. They thought dreams were messages from the gods, which contained vital wisdom and prophecies. There is also the Chinese which believe that dreams and dream analysis could help you learn more about your inner most secrets. This dream analysis could be used to make important decisions or make positive changes in life. While people in the Western world in the 1900s used dreams to find game, predict the weather, and tell the future. Dreams have always played an important role in everyday life. I think however Freud had the right idea. He believed that our brain protects us from disturbing thoughts and memories by repressing them and our dreams are a secret outlet for these repressed desires. To support his dream research, Sigmund Freud split the human psyche into three parts: the Id, Ego and Super-Ego. Freud said dreams are a way to express the unconscious emotions arising from the Id - otherwise we would be constantly disturbed by them in our sleep and soon wake up.

...Dream Interpretation Jami Hoffner Psychology 131 Dr. Deadre Holmes March 7, 2013 Dream interpretation is widely studied by a vast amount of people. The article includes different types of methods used by psychologist. As well unique theories of what a dream is or means, or if a dreams mean anything at all. The article talks about how people interoperate dreams into real life and how dreams effect our actions. Dreams more heavily influenced our judgment than when we are conscious stated by the article. Its funny to think that in our dreams we are more honest and truthful then in reality. This is because we are scared of what society is to think, and the effects our actions could have. In real life you can't just wake up and start over as you can do in a dream. In dreams we have more control of "our world" but when awake were in Gods world. God is the controller of our fate and we are the control of our actions. Our dreams are more like a test run to see how something will or may play out. They give you the sense of what to do, what to think, and who to be. As the article states if a woman were to wake up from a dream where her husband had an affair it could affect the way she thinks, and may lead her to start panicking and becoming curious. Leading to conclude that our internal thoughts can stimulate external actions. This article even states that dreams can some how predict what is to come or to happen, such as a death in the family or house burning. Its been...

Dreams: Informative Speech

...Thesis Statement: Understanding how dreams occur, how they affect our lives and what they mean help us grasp what dreams actually are. Intro: I. (Attention Getter) Have you ever dreamt that you were walking along the side of a road or along a cliff and suddenly you trip? You’re falling for what seems like forever, but before hitting the ground, you wake up? This is considered to be a falling dream, and ironically, falling dreams occur when you are falling asleep. They are usually accompanied by muscle spasms and twitches of the entire body. Although these dreams occur while we are falling asleep, they interpret a completely different meaning. Falling can mean you are insecure, you are losing grip, or you simply have fears that need to be faced. Patricia Garfield, the author of Creative Dreaming states: “there is some problem that is making you feel helpless like you have no support, so next time when you wake up startled from a falling dream, ask yourself what upcoming events do I fear I will fail?” II. (Introduce Topic) Since the beginning of time, people have been trying to understand the different functions of the human body, how we move, talk, and even act. Many of these physiological behaviors have been explained to some extent. However, one area of the human body that has baffled researchers, is that of the mind. Many things that go on inside the mind that don’t make sense, and serves no real explanation as to why or how things happen. One of the most fascinating...

Essay on Dreaming

...What Does it Mean to Dream? What does it mean to dream? Why do we dream? In fact, what is dreaming really? In this world, a lot of definitions and answers were formulated to solve this question. Up till now, nobody has actually defined clearly what is dreaming or why do we exactly dream. People after all have different contentions from each other and opinions can play a heavy role in determining a decision. Because of this a lot of prominent psychologists developed different definitions to the meaning of dream. Even before that, Philosophists have already pondered on such an interesting concept. Some say that dreams come from an external source, wanting to communicate with us or convey to us an important message. Others say that dreaming is related to fulfilment… meaning that a dream is essentially something you wish to happen but are either actively repressing it or subconsciously doing it to yourself. Others say that dreams are a reflection of waking life… of what we have experienced translated unto the realm of dreams. But what is dreaming really all about? Dream, otherwise known as Morpheus or Oneiros, and his willy antics extends itself to the realm he presides on. Just like the enigmatic being, the landscape is unpredictable, changing and foreign. It may be rapid in its change or it changes itself in a snail’s pace. There is no limitations to the human mind after all. Anything that can, could and couldn’t happen can be easily conceived and achieved by the mere thought...

Dream Perspectives

...Dream Perspectives Scott M. Standen Helga Parker November 28, 2011 Abstract This paper will explore the three perspectives of dreaming. The psychoanalytic perspective, the cognitive perspective and the biological perspective. The psychoanalytic perspective, as conveyed by celebrated neurologist and founding psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, is examined through his literary work The Interpretation of Dreams. This book serves as the basis of the psychoanalytic perspective which the other perspectives will be set against. The cognitive perspective will be viewed through the writing of David Foulkes in his book Dreaming: A Cognitive Psychoanalytic Analysis and the biological perspective will be discussed through the writings of Drs. Allan Hobson and Robert McCarley of Harvard University. Through these sources it will be shown how the perspectives relate to one another so that a basic understanding of them can exist in the scientific community. The recorded history of dreams dates back to 3100 B.C. through clay tablets describing the story of king Gilgamesh who reported his recurring dreams to his goddess-mother Ninsun, who made the first known dream interpretation (Seligman, 1948). Babylonians and other ancient cultures divided dreams into good ones that came from the gods and bad ones that came from demons (Oppenheim, 1966). Various other ancient cultures believed dreams to...

Dreams Term Paper

...RESEARCH PAPER - DREAMS About a month ago the two of us brainstormed a few ideas for our first Psychology project. After a weighing the pros and cons of our options, we decided to research dreams and dreaming. We were hoping to learn some information over the vague topic of dreams such as the biology, the causes of dreams, and possibly some of the meanings behind certain dreams. Not only that, but we were interested in the different varieties of dreams people had and why they had them. From the beginning, we had hoped to answer some seemingly basic questions such as “What is a dream?” “What are some different types of dreams people experience?” and “Why would someone experience a certain type of dream?” After many hours and much research, we feel that we were rather successful in answering these and many more questions regarding the topic. So what IS a dream? Well, according to Sigmund Freud, dreams are the, “royal road to the unconscious.” Coming into this project with little to no experience on the topic, it was more than difficult to comprehend why it was that important. “They’re only dreams,” we would say, but after extensive research and reading, it is much easier to follow where Freud was coming from. You see, dreams are not simple; you have to admire the intricacy of a dream interweaving thoughts, ideas, and experiences a person has had in his/her lifetime. The process of dreaming itself connects different parts of the mind that may not be able to find each other...

Final

...a split personality patient telling me a story about how he talked to himself. He said it was a dream. But even in a dream, in my experience I can’t have two of myself at the same time. If I am in the dream as a character, (Sometimes I dreamed about others and I didn’t even show up in my own dream) most of the time I knew I was dreaming. The pictures in my dreams are black and white. So if I am in a world without any other color, I will know I am dreaming. But there is a scary question I am wondering. Like what the narrator said, “Who is dreaming whom? I know I am dreaming you, I do not know if you are dreaming me. ” What if we can share our dream at the same time? For example, I was dreaming about my mother who is thousands miles away from me and we have the time difference, 12 hours+. I know she was in my dream and we talked about the tuition of Berklee is getting much higher than before. Then my mother had the same dream at the same time. So when she called me, she said she was dreaming about me, and I realize we were dreaming about each other. But we can’t leave any message in our dreams before we talk to each other and we appeared both of our dreams. But the narrator’s dream is scary too. His another himself wanted to suicide. Why he is still alive? If they really share the dream, once the dreamer died, the character would die too. That’s the logic. But anyway. That’s what I thought from the story. Lucid Dreaming Outline

...Lucid Dreaming – A Guide to Controlling your Dreams Introduction Going to bed for eight hours a day means we spend a third of our lives sleeping. For the average life expectancy in Ireland, that’s over 25 years in total. How often do you have a dream? Most people couldn’t say. Dreams are forgotten within minutes of waking up unless they make an active effort to remember and even then it’s difficult. Surprisingly, the average person has between three and five per night spending around a quarter of their time sleeping in a dream. This would be around six and a half years spent just dreaming. Why not use it for something better? Dreaming Dreams are described as: “successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur usually involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.” Dreams mainly happen during the rapid-eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, where brain...
