...LANGUAGE STYLE MATCHING: Can it Predict Lasting Relationships? Patricia Cochran COM 200: Making Connections: Understanding Interpersonal Communication Dr. Andree Swanson November 7, 2011 LANGUAGE STYLE MATCHING: Can it Predict Lasting Relationships? People may develop many different relationships during their lifetime. These relationships may range from family, friends, co-workers, acquaintances, bosses, and lovers. “New research has pointed out that people match one another’s language styles more during happy phases of their relationship, and this phenomenon is called Language Style Matching or LSM.” (Muppala, 2010) It is believed if two people are similar in their speech patterns and their use of function words, they are psychologically compatible. Researchers are using this technology to evaluate natural speech to determine this compatibility. This paper will discuss whether language style matching is accurate and can predict lasting relationships. “A study published in Psychological Science says that people with similar language styles stay in relationships longer than those whose styles are dissimilar.” (Castillo, 2011) This study is referring to the use of function words. “Function words are highly social and they require social skills...

...Paige Ghesquire ENG 3UI – 05 Ms. Wright May 23, 2015 The Kite Runner: The Power of Words “The power of words, written or spoken, have life. They can change the world.” (search quotes). The power of words should not be underestimated. Liesel proves this to be true in the novel and the film The Book Thief. She uses words to develop relationships with her foster father, Hans Hubermann; Max Vandenburg, the illicit Jew in her basement; and her neighbours. In the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak there is much more relationship development compared to the film The Book Thief directed by Brian Percival. This consequently causes the theme of the power of words to be less prominent in the film. The novel The Book Thief develops the relationship between Liesel Meminger and her neighbours more than the film The Book Thief therefore minimizing the theme. First, Liesel and Rudy become best friends, “Insane or not, Rudy was always destined to be Liesel’s best friend.” (Zusak 48). Rudy introduced himself to Liesel as soon as she moved in, he developed a liking for her and they soon become best friends. Rudy used his charming, and sometimes insulting, words to win over Liesel. This develops the theme because it shows that even if one does not want to like someone, their words can change them into a likable person. Second, Liesel and Frau Hermann develop a relationship, “When she came and stood with an impossibly frail steadfastness, she was holding a tower of books against her stomach...

...“I do but ask that you be always fair” and “Once more into my arid days like dew” are two sonnets by poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. This essay will compare and contrast the arguments made in the sonnets “I do but ask” and “Once more into my arid days”. This essay will do so by first examining the similarities in the two poems’ arguments and later examining their differences. This essay will argue that “I do but ask” and “Once more into arid days” both dispel the myth that relationships are perfect by highlighting that relationships can fail. ...“The spirit of my father grow strong in me” In the play As You Like It, by William Shakespeare, Orlando believes that he will grow to be like his father and that he has a relational connection with his father. Shakespeare explores many aspects of belonging and not belonging in relationships with families, couples, genders and social class. He uses a wide range of dramatic and language techniques to explore the relational aspects of belonging. Juxtaposition is used throughout the play to show the difference in relationships. It shows the contrast between Oliver and Orlando’s despising relationship compared with Rosalind and Celia’s loving relationship. For example Celia and Rosalind’s relationship is described as “being ever from their cradles bred together” and “never two ladies loved as they do”. This is a contrast to Oliver calling his brother a “villein” and Oliver controlling his brother “for the which his animals on his dunghills are as much bound to him as I”. Juxtaposition between scenes is also used to explore relationships in As You Like It. “Loves one dearer than the natural bond of sisters”. Emotive language is used to explore how Celia and Rosalind have a very deep relationship. Words such as “loves” and “natural” explore how close they are as cousins and how they are held by one another. “Sweet my coz,” is another example of emotive language. Classical allusion is also used to show belonging in the play. “Juno’s swans,” describes how Rosalind and Celia...

...Explore the ways different poets respond to the experiences of relationship in their poems. The poem "Nettles" by Vernon Scannel is about the narrator showing his thoughts and feelings when his son fell in a bed of nettles. The poem shows us that their relationship was strong and that they were close. The poet uses a metaphors to share his thoughts and feelings. An example of a metaphor is when the poet compares the nettles to be "green spears." The words "green spears" makes me think the nettle are like weapons that are razor-sharp. The use of colour imagery here with the "green" isn't used for pain. The colour green links with environment in this instance it is nature that has hurt his son. Another example of a metaphor is when he compares the nettles like soldiers dying in a army " fallen dead". This suggests that he is angry and upset because the nettles hurt his son. Also this suggests that he wants revenge by killing the nettles. Moreover, it suggests that he has killed the nettles and the nettles are thrashed! The poet describes the nettles like "nettle bed". The word "bed" suggests that the bed is comfy. The word bed is usually associated with soft, relaxing and warm. The word "nettle" is associate with sharp. The words " nettle bed" suggest that the poet son has fallen into a nettle bed and hurt himself Moreover, another example of a metaphor is when he compares the nettles like soldiers because in the text it says "fallen dead." This suggests that...

...The Word “Family” Name Institution The Word “Family” Introduction My favorite word is family. The word family defines the existence of human beings in the society. A family is defined to be a group of people that is made up of parents and children living in a similar household (Brighouse & Swift, 2014). In most instances, a family is made up of parents and their biological children. The parents are a father and mother. Nonetheless, a family can be made up of a single parent with either adopted or biological children. Instances of single parenthood can occur because of a death of the other parent or a divorce. The word family stands out as my favorite word because of the following three reasons. At the outset, the word family stands out as an incomparable word because it highlights the fundamental unit of human society. A family unit made up of a man, woman and children living together in peace and harmony is a construct of societal organization. The presence of a peaceful and harmonious relationship confers intellectual, sexual, social and emotional stability to one another. A member of the family can readily rely on the other member in terms of emotional, intellectual, social and sexual relationship. As a result, the individual family is a reflection of the society that mainly depends on the stability of the family for its existence (Brighouse & Swift, 2014). Secondly, the word family stands out to be my favorite word because it upholds...

Remember you will need to use these to communicate with the world and all communication channels along with good behavior. Develop Strategies for Active, Critical, and Empathic Listening Sally and Robert one of the keys to having a long healthy relationship is being able to be an effective listener. Listening is one of the most important skills we can acquire. You want to be able to understand what each other is saying, respond appropriately to what your partner is saying, and provide helpful feedback. In addition, to practice active listening, try to send back the messages you hear from your spouse very much like mirroring. This is one of the most effective counseling strategies that also prove effective marriage. Be empathic and nonjudgmental. ...The article “Shared Talking Styles Herald New and Lasting Romance” gives an overview of how different elements such as function words play an instrumental role in determining the compatibility between men and women. In my opinion, this article represents both consistent and inconsistent information. According to Bruce Bower 2010, two people who hat one another will often exhibit a high amount of language-style matching. I believe this to be a true statement due to the fact that both individuals are experiencing the same feeling, so the language will be similar. Friendships are formed from characteristics such as language-style matching. Positive relationship stems from combining the two elements together. I am also a firm believer that communication is a two-way entity, and both parties must be willing to compromise certain aspects for the overall success of their relationship. The language style matching exercise is a great tool in measuring the compatibility but must not be set in stone. I’m also a firm believer that opposites do attract. An old cliché that states “men are from Mars, women are from Venus” gives a clear description of the differences between men and women. Men approach conversations with a distinct set of rules and interpretations of talk. Men focus on status and independence; women focus more on intimacy and connection. Not only do men and women communicate differently but they think, feel, perceive, react, respond, love, need, and appreciate differently...
