...Face flushed, heart pounding, brain racing, and stomach in a knot; I’ve lied before, but when caught lying this is how my body reacts. When feelings of guilt and remorse take over I know I’ve learned my lesson. I’ve also been lied to before and feelings of anger and betrayal are quick to respond. Knowing how I feel when caught lying and how I feel when lied to, one major question arises; why lie? Like a small child who learns they will get burned touching a hot stove, a liar needs to learn how others respond to being lied to. By definition the word “learn” means “to gain knowledge or understanding of or skill in by study, instruction, or experience” (“Learn” def. 1). At a young age my parents told me lying was wrong, but it wasn’t until I experienced being caught that it imprinted in my brain. Lies may serve different types of purposes, however, no matter what the purpose, as a whole, I view lying as a learning experience. Categorizing lies based on their purpose helps me understand why a person might lie. Judith Viorst did an excellent job of categorizing lies in her essay “The Truth about Lying.” She presented four categories: “social lies” (314), “peace - keeping lies” (315), “protective lies” (316), and “trust - keeping lies” (317). However, there are many places where lies would fit into more than one category. When I took a look at lies that I have been told and have told, I realized that many fell into Viorst’s category of “social lies” (314) as well as another she...

...But lying for your own benefit or to harm someone is never tolerated and there are sometimes after-effects. Sometimes, we don’t want to tell the truth if it will cause another person to feel bad, so we lie out of kindness to preserve their feelings. Say someone gives you a gift but you don’t like it, most people would rather lie and say they love it instead of how they really feel because it’s not worth hurting someone’s feelings over. But as said on and excerpt from “The U.S. Political Campaign: Lies, Lies, Lies”, “On rare occasions, lying to protect others can literally be a matter of life or death. Anne Frank survived as long as she did because those sheltering her and her family lied to the Nazis.” I think that this is a perfect example of when lying is completely justified since people’s lives were saved....

...7 months after having an affair with Abigail, John Proctor was still trying to gain back the trust of his wife,Elizabeth. Because of this, when Elizabeth discovers John was in a room alone with his former mistress, all she can do is reply, "Why, then, it is not how you told me." (Miller 1164) Due to their past history, John's admission must have been extremely disheartening to Elizabeth who was still trying to trust her husband again. The other occasion where Proctor lies is for a far more acceptable reason. On the day of his execution Proctor signed the confession to save his life, even though it was all a lie. When Danforth wanted to nail the confession in the town center, Proctor quickly snatched up the document and refused saying "I have three children-how may I teach them to walk like men in the world, and I have sold my friends?" (Miller 1231) After realizing his lie would hurt his friends, Proctor fixed his mistake and ripped up the document, ultimately resulting in his...

...Did you know people lie 100 times a day! For example, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, there are lies that cost many innocent people. Especially in the salem witch trials. Some of these lies that were told were because of vengence. Lying comes at a cost because Elizabeth Proctor got her husband hanged, Abigail Williams got most the people accused and killed in salem, Samuel Parris and Thomas Putnam lie but there's not much effect on what they lied about. First off, Elizabeth Proctor is a holy women, but when she told a lie to show that John Proctor is a good man, it lead to having her husband being condemned and then hanged. She has never lied before and she has always been a christian women. However, this is one of the reasons why lying is dangerous, “I come to think he fancied her. And so one night I lost my wits, I think, and put her out on the highroad,”(190). In this quote Elizabeth says that abigail and proctor never had an affair but that clearly happened. Then Proctor tells her that he told the judges and Elizabeth’s heart drops and realizes that she had made a mistake....

...In the article, Teens do their share of lying, the author Loretta Ragsdell argues that teenagers lie because they feel they need to do so to escape punishment. She supports her ideas through interviews with numerous teenagers who shared their experiences of lying with her. ...One point is that Jimmy lied about his identity. Although this is true, Jimmy only did that so he could start a new life that was morally better than Jimmy’s life. Secondly, Jimmy lied about what was in his briefcase. As this may be true, Jimmy lied about what was in his briefcase because he knew his tools used for opening safes were going to be in someone else’s hands now. Jimmy was not going to keep them therefore shows how morally good he is. Lastly, Jimmy lied to his warden. “Why, I never cracked a safe in my life.” and Jimmy said this after he was about to be released from jail, and what put him in jail was him cracking safes. Yes, Jimmy did “lie” to the warden, but it was obviously sarcasm and it was not meant to be taken as a lie. Jimmy is aware that the warden knows about Jimmy cracking safes and being a thief because that was why Jimmy was in the slammer in the first place. To conclude, Valentine told lies, but most of them was to keep himself far away from being immoral and...

...honesty. In the story Hazel is riding in the car with Granddaddy Vale, Hunca Bubba, and her little brother, Baby Jason. Bubba believes he has started a new chapter in his life, so he wants his family to refer to him as Jefferson Winston Vale. He shows them a picture of his girlfriend. Seeing that picture triggered a memory of when she went to the movies to see Gorilla, My Love. Seeing that picture of Bubba’s girlfriend reminded her of how betrayed she felt from the movie. Bambara shows that Children’s exact understanding of the truth shows their childishness, as adults often find white lies essential to avoid hurt feelings, causing a sense of betrayal in the children’s minds. Hazel feels that betrayal can come from adults in the society. When Hazel went to the movies to see the film Gorilla, My Love she became disappointed when she found out the movie was not what she expected. She said, “So the movie come on and right away it's this churchy music and clearly not about no gorilla. Bout Jesus.” She felt betrayed as if the theatre betrayed her and lied to her. She thought the movie was going to actually be about gorillas, so Hazel didn’t expect it to be a religious movie. Hazel, thinking she is always right, went back to the ticket booth and told the salesman she wants her money back but he refused. Very furiously she said, "I get so tired grownups messin over kids just cause they little and can't take em to court." Hazel thinks the guy deceived her for her money when in reality she...
